There is one problem here. Said experiences don't have to be enjoyable to imprint. It's obviously better that they are, but even neutral experiences can imprint up to a fetish.
Yes, but there's also negative imprinting, in which the person becomes extremely averse to a sexual situation, such as certain women who have to be on top at all times because they were forced into a submissive position during rape/ molestation/ etc. While the sexual experience is influential, it creates an opposite reaction.

I'm just trying to cover for that so people don't get the wrong impression, I should have just elaborated.

Won't fault you, or make you seek references cause I can't be bothered doing the same as I agree with you. Fetishes are too big of a term and do incorporate too many elements to be best explained through a single 'quick fix' answer.

Had always thought analysing was part of psychology but a moot side point. I will say Freud was way to obsessed with his own mother. The more I read about him the more I realise he just assumes everyone else thinks the same way he does. The jokes people make about him pale compared to the real think about that man.

But on that note I still don't think anyone in the field has the right answer. All of them have the same problem, they fit a theory that would best suit themselves and try to expand it over the whole of mankind. In reality, as you have stated, even this one issue is too diverse for a single answer to best fit all examples found within.

Why do people think GM Corvettes are cool and others think they are junk?

Personal preference.

Same thing with sexual desires.

I myself I love women of all creeds, races blahh, blahh, bahhh...

I do prefer western society based or second gen. But what really sets me off with them is lingerie. I have a huge lingerie fetish when it comes to women. Next would be dress up style like "goth" or "retro" girls and on down the line.

I have known many pretty girls that all they wear are sports bras and T-shirts; only to send my attention to what are classicly not as attractive woman, but wear the clothes, style of dress, lingerie I like. I just find them more attractive.

I have never been a big fan of tatoos on women, but piercings including unique piercings I find sexually desirable. I know guys that feel just the opposite.

They think a girl wearing a ball cap every day and never washing it to the point its smell makes me want to puke, they find reverence in that.

It is a each to their own.

I'm attractive, but I am a big nerd on the inside. Some women like that. Others don't. Others do like to be treated like crap by men looking for just sex. Sure they get a fancy meal, but those guys expect sex for it. I don't. I don't try to make women feel like they owe me sex for taking them to the "Red Lobster." I have know clue why women think that is a "fancy" place for dinner. It is a crappy chain. Joe's Crabshack is better as a chain. /digressionOff

For the same reason we have mental diseases, quarks, personalities, manias etc. Because the mind is a complex organ that baffles us. No one truly understand it and yet we depend on it at all times. On a personal note, pregnant women of course that is common and tame compared to some of the junk out there.

I'm not sure. Let's look at my childhood for a second in order to think this through:

First video game ever played: Sonic the Hedgehog
Favorite children's show: Little Bear
Favorite Disney movie: Robin Hood, The Lion King, and Fox and the Hound
Favorite game series: Star Fox, followed closely by Sonic

I seem to remember a few books/movies involving talking mice as well. In fact, from early on almost all of the things I favored featured anthropomorphic characters. It's my guess that my first experience with talking animals was something I found to be particularly charming at the time, and my constant devotion and exploration of the subject naturally led me to take a deeper, more carnal interest in the matter. In short, it is likely an early stimulus that grew in the person's mind that makes them develop a fetish, as my early fascination with anthropomorphism would show. Is it a bad thing? I don't think so. But then again, my fetish is relatively harmless (and as of yet realistically unachievable) compared to others out there. It's an interesting thing to ponder.

There's a theory about foot fetishes, because the areas of the brain that control sex and feet are adjacent, so scientists have hypothesised that there may be a connection between those two areas of the brain in some people. Fetishes may just be a case of overlapping neurons in areas of the brain, meaning that you just happen to be hardwired to associate certain things with sexual arousal. ^ ^

Fetishes are a symptom of evolution.

HOW they arrive a few posters here have speculated: early experience and wiring (or nurture and nature respectively, and both are happening and useful in slightly different ways). But WHY we have fetishes is because they propogate new genetic trends.

Fetishes (amongst all sexual preferences) are aquired by some random early experience, and encourage people to select a certain type of mate. By extension, though its important in its own right, these mates are more likely to belong to a single set (you only like chicks in glasses, say, and chicks in glasses get more attention from guys who like chicks in glasses). So, by seeking out in this way, loose groups (or networks) of particular pursued and particular pursuers form, having higher rates of interaction with each other and, inevitably, their young also (nurture). The principal still works if groups of fetishes overlap, and it doesn't matter if its your own biological child who is exposed to you.

As the pursuers in a group hold up such-a-type of 'model' and the pursued have that feature, their offspring will be more likely to have their random experiences centre around it. So the fetishes tend to be passed on, with those aiding survival propogating - socially - more successfully. Though fragile, traits aquired by experience can quickly adapt (see 'Meme'). Consider how the American model has gone from the 'fuller figure' of the early twentieth century lean times to the pencil thin as obesity becomes problematic. Models are just that: models. Across the century what's happened is that in most cases American women have simply tried to stay a little fatter or thinner depending on the vogue, to the betterment of their health (and so child-bearing abilities) in either case.

Wiring, or nature, is glacial compared to nurture and it records much more general things. To at least like those with everything in pretty much the right place probably does not qualify as extreme fetish, its just a useful bare-minimum to keep some genetic order. Things get hard-wired when groups gravitate for long enough around a successful feature. Then it becomes an advantage not just to luckily have the right random experiences to keep the trait going, but to have a literal kink in the brain that ensures that you and your offspring will do also. This too happens randomly, but it only needs to happen once in the right group to propogate further. It's also worth noting that nurture can over-ride nature: that's how the system changes over time.

Would that explain it? And take heart! A penchant for webbed-feet might seem freaky to them now, but if the global warming is true you might just be the next Abraham in a thousand years. :)

Me? I have enjoyed the sight of a pretty girl who knows how to smoke a cigarette... Guess I'm doomed to extinction, huh? :-(

Freud was never a psychologist. He was a psychoanalyst. The two sound the same but are entirely unrelated.
I don't know what ass you're pulling your information out of, but:

Main Entry: psy·chol·o·gy
Pronunciation: \-jē\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural psy·chol·o·gies
Etymology: New Latin psychologia, from psych- + -logia -logy
Date: 1653
1 : the science of mind and behavior
2 a : the mental or behavioral characteristics of an individual or group b : the study of mind and behavior in relation to a particular field of knowledge or activity
3 : a theory or system of psychology
? psy·chol·o·gist \-jist\ noun
Any source you go to ever will tell you that Psychoanlysis is a branch of psychology. Don't make shit up on the internet.

I don't think anyone really knows for sure, but it might have something to do with genetics, or maybe it has something to do with certain things that happened in someone's life. Usually it is due to some psychological "disorder" that can cause us to have strange feelings about certain subjects.

Because when your brain was developing i.e. from conception to adulthood something happened and your brain wiring associated your fetish with an object or subject. It is brain development, NOT EVOLUTION.

My fetish is skin. I don't know why. I'd say it is relatively normal.

And by that I mean it is completely normal.

Something I've always wondered and no one's given me a good answer to. Its usually just, "People just like that stuff" but I want a serious psychological answer.

So, simple question, why do people prefer certain sexual things or find hands or feet sexy? I for one have a typical Asian fetish and my jaw usually drops at the sight of hot Japanese girls, but why? What answers might the Escapist have?

And, for discussion's sake, what fetishes do you have and do you know why? Its the internet so you can be honest.
I am a psychologist. Well Ph.D. candidate but close enough. Paraphilias are generally caused by a combination of environmental, psychosocial and genetic factors. As such it is not easy to pinpoint one particular thing that triggers a paraphilia. For example it is generally thought that paraphilias develop in puberty based on one's upbringing during that time. However certain things (e.g. having a need for rough sexual intercourse) may come from earlier childhood experiences. Paraphilias are not a bad thing! We only classify them as disorders if they interfere with one's life or the lives and safety of others. As for your "fetish" it may not be so much a fetish as a preference, and that's ok! Generally for people with "asian girl fetishes" I have found they either were immersed in the culture in a significant way or enjoy how exotic these women are. I hope this helps!

I have no real answer as to why I like the things I do... And I'm not about to go into the details of the myriad of things that give me a jolly. Though I do believe boredom DOES have a part to play in it. Sure the vanilla stuff I see is all well and good... But the other stuff is just BETTER. ;3

If you find something arousing, it's a kink. If you can't reach arousal without that certain thing, it's a fetish.

I don't know. We just...do.

Do you ask why you like to laugh? Maybe?

But I see what you're coming from. I would like to know why I have a fetish for bellybuttons and the general belly area.

That actually is a great analysis.

Especially the Asian thing. I believe I've pinpointed my reasons for why I love asian women.

As a child, I was almost obsessed with Japanese anime, therefore, I have a strong love of their culture and especially their women. I've always been a very cultured person, but I have a strange love for the Japanese culture in particular and I believe this is where that love stems from.

Though, I have one fetish I didn't mention before. Hands. That's the weird one for me, but when I see a woman's hands as smooth and soft it practically makes my heart melt. This I can't pinpoint. I have no idea where this comes from.
