Honestly, I thought they were fine. I don't understand the hate. I guess that's because I don't hate them.

Lucas went and stomped on over 25 years of community built universe; don't license it if you're not willing to let any one's efforts stand.

On top of that, he handled everything poorly with 2D characters and plot so the best we gained were a couple of lightsaber fights. The entire time I felt more like he was making a parody of the original trilogy and hoping no one would notice because he included all of the things that someone might think made the original trilogy popular if they took it at face value (robots, hot chicks, action, teenage drama). It was like he extrapolated and stretched everything he could because he couldn't think of enough stuff to fill the movies on his own: oh, everyone liked boba fett, so let's put in a clone of him, only we'll say boba is the clone, no one will notice; or hey, luke had a blue lightsaber and a green lightsaber while vader had a red one, so red is evil and there are only two colors of lightsaber except for jedi Shaft; and so on. Don't even get me started on the problem of making two armies fight when we are given zero incentive to care who wins because they are both manufactured.

Between the prequel trilogy and then the expanded universe jumping the shark with its invasion by aliens from another galaxy, I have been completely stripped of all the things I loved about Star Wars. Well, except the toys, we've gotten the best Star Wars toys ever until we get real x-wings and millennium falcons.

Star Wars was so much more.

(Sorry, this has been building up for years.)

Okay so not all people dislike it as they should.
I must say that hating it is a bit of an overstatement though. When I did watch them I thought they were mediocre as movies, but as a "tribute" to the legacy that is star wars? That ruined it for me.
They wasted some of the best acting talent that they had like Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Samueal L Jackson and Christopher Lee, by casting them as two dimensional characters with the only reason to think they were cool or badass was the fact that they were Jedi. No joke.

They could've done so much more with the whole premise of the clone wars, and the whole "empire taking over" situation, but it just turned out to be... unnecessarily comical I guess.
And the empire is formed because

"OH NO I GOT ATTACKED BY JEDI, LETS BECOME A DICTATORSHIP. FOR SAFETY OF COURSE"

Seriously. What the hell is with that?

Some of the concepts of the characters, like Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, Jango Fett, were alright, just they were poorly executed, not by the actors, but by George Lucas' own terrible writing.

So if you think I'm clinging to my nostalgia gloves? Well yes I am, I'm not denying that. But if you're going to make a prequel to an excellent movie series 20 years ago, you don't make it a heap of crap. People will be relying on their nostalgia to actually like these movies, and you have to remember that George Lucas makes money from his seemingly never dying cash cow, from this element of nostalgia.

EDIT:
Oh and you might find this extreme, but I dislike the prequels almost to the point where I consider it non-canon. No joke. I recognize it as part of the story line, but I absolutely hate it. I wish it could die.

The complete mishandling of every aspect of the Star Wars universe.
It was made for a generation other than the original fans.
The concept art was better than the finished product.
The robots and droids in the newer movies are horrible.
Star Wars used to be a dark, gritty universe...then it became squeaky clean.
Too many occassions with the lightsabers.
The lightsaber fights were horrible. I liked the originals and their realism more, not the raving dance scenes.
Dialogue was horrible.
Everything felt like a damned videogame.
Yoda did something other than speak.
Anakin failed to be the heroic knight fallen, in every aspect.
There are TOO MANY illogical moments in them that I just don't see how anyone can reasonably place within an actual movie.
The clones weren't Jedi Clones as originally planned.
The references to scenes from the original movies got way out of hand.
The fact that they made every character coincidentally bump into each other before the original trilogy.
R2-D2 flew.

If you didn't see the originals, fall in love with them, watch them time after time again, then you'll never truly understand why they were superior to the newer films.

I gotta say, I really disliked the lack of meaning behind the lightsaber fights in the new ones. It was just a massive display of acrobatics as opposed to something that had... well... emotion behind it. Now if you watch all seven parts of that review that was linked earlier, it pretty much sums up my point about it.

What I especially hate is when people try to justify this acrobatic crap by saying that of course the jedi could fight better in the prequels as they had proper training, or some shit like that. Serious. That is the excuse I've heard some people use before. Drives me up the wall trying to reason with star wars noobs.

Oh I especially hate it when they think the stormtroopers are clones.

Jar Jar and Anakin - Jar jar was stupid, but yeah, I can get over it I guess.

But having Darth Vader as a whingy little *****? No. Just NO. Angry and emo are not the same thing ffs.

We all knew that the Jedi fell and the Empire rose at the end of the third prequel, but the idea that Darth Vader started as this perfect child you wanted to kick in the teeth to an angsty teenager that wants to get laid by a woman who doesn't show any interest unless the plot demands it, and the fact that said woman takes the rage-induced slaughter of innocent villagers as "frustration", all culminating to that horribly rendered "NOOOOOOoooo!" we all heard in Revenge of the Sith, it leaves one of the most feared men of the Star Wars universe feel like a joke.

I didn't hate them. Sure, the original trilogy was better, but I still liked the prequels, particularly the space battle at the opening of Revenge of the Sith.

Bad acting, uninteresting characters and Lucas tried to change the philosopy of Star Wars. "Only sith believe in absolutes". "There is no try, only do or no do." ?Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.? Yoda had a mostly Buddhist philosophy on life, which contradicts what Obi-wan said in episode 3. I guess Yoda is a Sith lord because absolutes is pretty much all he delt with. Or maybe its just because George Lucas was more interested in making a political statement than he was making a good Starwars movie.

1. Too much politics without enough intrigue.
2. Anakin's fall to the dark side felt rushed and unnatural.
3. Jar Jar
4. Midi-chlorians
5. We already knew what was going to happen, and Lucas delivered the story in a shitty way. Seriously, the end result may already be set, but you can mix it up and surprise us a little bit with how you GET to that end result.
6. Wasn't as fun and raw and fluid and gritty as the first three.

There were, however, two redeeming factors that, for all of their faults, Episodes 1 - 3 DID deliver on.
1. They delivered the sheer, epic mythology and background of the original trilogy in a fairly solid way (except the parts where Anakin and Padme were together. That sucked.)
2. Ewan McGregor

Honestly, what ruined it for me was the fucking "romance" that was so heavilly focused on in the second film of the prequel trilogy. Hell, i'm half tempted to just upload the film onto my computer, and cut out EVERY SINGLE SCENE after Coruscant that involves Padme and Anakin until they arrive on geonosis...IT WAS THAT BAD FOR ME.

I think the action has always been consistently awesome throughout the whole saga. But story-wise i think 4 and 3 are my favourites.

Course i grew up with these movies so all of them hold a special place in my heart. Especially the original trilogy, which i watched as a child (Pretty sure 6 scarred me for life though =P You know the scene i'm talking about).

But yeah, overall, 4 and 3 are my favourites.

I don't "hate" the prequels, though I do think they are inferior when compared to the original trilogy.

I actually like Episode I. I don't know why everyone bashes this one so much. I'm in the small minority who didn't mind Jar Jar. He's merely the comic relief archetype, filling the role C-3PO played in the classic trilogy. As for the midichlorians, I just like to think that the Jedi got it a bit wrong (they've certainly been wrong before about other things). Midichlorians don't create the Force, the Force creates Midichlorians. Didn't Yoda himself say the Force creates life in the Empire Strikes Back? It's probably safe to assume then that all living things have some midichlorians, but Force-sensitive individuals have much larger concentrations of them. The midichlorians themselves don't to anything mystical.

Now Episode II, that is easily my least favorite of the prequels. To be fair, it's got its good parts, like the scene at Dex's Diner and Jango Fett (he's got the cool Mandalorian armor, but actually DOES shit instead of just standing around like Boba in the original trilogy). To get to these parts however, you have to endure the agony that is the romance (if you want to call it that) between Anakin and Padme. Lucas can't write good love dialogue to save his life. My biggest complaint is with Anakin himself however. It's like they decided, "hey! Let's make Anakin the whiniest, most unlikeable douchebag imaginable! That'll really endear him to the audience!"

Oh yeah, there was one more good thing about Episode II: I got to see Natalie Portman dressed like this:

PHWOAR

Episode III was definitely better than II, but there are still some niggling complaints that keep it below my enjoyment of Episode I. Anakin's as unlikeable as ever, which is doubly aggravating when you know you're supposed to feel sorry for his fall to the dark side. Instead I'm relieved because I know I won't have to put up with him for much longer.

Then Vader says "NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" and I die a little on the inside.

One more thing: I wish they hadn't CGI'd everything up the butt. I can understand bluescreening a pitched space battle or for some of the more exotic aliens, but doing it for nearly every scene?! Whatever happened to extras in plastic armor for troopers or the muppet masterpiece that was "classic" Yoda? I also missed the "lived-in" feel of the vehicles and sets the originals had. When you saw X-Wings with battle scars and chipped paint, it really conveyed the sense that they were machines of war that saw action regularly. Yoda's hut was a spartan, somewhat untidy affair, and it felt more like a home because of it.
