Because it was done purely to sell action figures and video games to ADHD children.
Because the plots were over-confusing and muddled with space politics- Just stick to good VS evil, George.
Because they relied too much on CGI effects to keep it's eleven year old audience entertained.
Because it had Jar Jar Binks.

There's a great Youtube series where a guy analyzes the prequels, and talks about why their terrible movies.
They're also funny as hell.
There's one for the Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones, and one for Revenge of the Sith coming.
Great viewing if you've got a couple of spare hours and dislike the Star Wares prequels.

I've posted part 1 here, go to Youtube if you want to find the rest.

1) Hayden Christensen, as I notice many other people have said.

2) It's a prequel. We already know what's going to happen to everyone. There is no suspense. You like Mace Windu? Well, don't get too attached to him or any other awesome Jedi (or a certain Twi'lek Jedi with a wardrobe problem :)

3) HORRIBLE writing. That is a FACT, it is not opinion. Let's take a look at the scene were Hayden (I refuse to call him Anakin) turns evil:

(Weeping in tears) "What have I done? I just helped the very enemy of my order murder a man who helped raise me. I've turned my back on everything I believe in. I'm a horrible person."

(In an evil voice) "You're fulfilling your destiny."

"Oh, okay! I'm all better now. I'm going to go kill everyone I've grown up with over the past several years. And I better remember to slaughter the little children, just to prove I'm evil. After all, if it's destiny, it's okay."

BULL!!!!

It's the overall lack of consistency and pointless pandering to the fans. There's also the padding, the retconning, and the hole-laden plots.

The thing that bothered me the most was the entire trip to Tatooine. It was just a plot cul-de-sac that existed solely due to the idiocy of the characters. Why, precisely, couldn't they just hire a Han Solo analogue and get the heck out of there? It's not like the Jedi Council wouldn't pay the fare. Then there's the slavery (which Jedi are OK with) and gambling with a child's life and someone else's ship (which Jedi are OK with) and rigging a bet (which Jedi are OK with), but they can't steal the part from Watto? Or use Jedi Mind trick on someone else? I could go on more with this trip to Tatooine, but this section really highlights how far the series had sunk with regards to pace, plot, characters, and even basic logic.

Naboo - does not fit as a Star Wars planet for me. Got the Prequel off to a bad start. The fact that George had Padme and Anakin keep going back to it was annoying as all hell.

Corusant, Kashyyyk, Mustafa, Geonosis - all great planets. Should have focused more story on those.

Every Sith and General Grevious saved the prequel for me

I don't.

The first one I'll admit probably was the worst. Two was alright. Three was actually pretty awesome in my opinion.

One reason is because it inspired this: http://www.nooooooooooooooo.com/

In all seriousness though, the original movies were superior. No doubt about that.
ahaha thats the greatest website ive ever seen

Biggest reason: douchebag Anakin Skywalker. Just start cutting your wrists with your lightsaber already, you whiny emo *****!

The so called "prequel trilogy" (for I still refuse to acknowledge them as canon) sacrificed strong characterization and meaningful themes for flashy effects and "oh! look what us Jedi can do! We can leap tall buildings in a single bound!!"

Fail. -_-

I didn't hate them. What I didn't like about the films could be solved by a little editing, and a new actor to play Anakin.

Also something just occured to me the other day. Padme dies because she "loses the will to live" (bullshit in and of itself), but she just had two babies. She reality couldn't give a shit about her children enough to want to see them. So Luke and Leia's mother didn't really care about them one bit. She's just as bad as Anakin.

I could handle them right till the end of the third one, that whole bit that goes like "NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO", ya that sealed my hate. Oh and Jar Jar Binks, I can understand the whole wanting to make the movie more kid friendly, but damn.

I actually kinda liked 'em.
I was pretty small when I saw Episodes 1 and 2, so all the action just wade my jaw drop to the floor. Then I got older and the action didn't bother me all that much.
I was never that interested in the parts between the action and that stuck for when I eventually say the original trilogy. Might be something I'll properly understand when I can respect it's artistic quality and blah de blah de blah, but for now I'll stick with wanting Pod Racing to seem as epic as it did when I first saw it.

I don't understand all the hatred directed at Episodes 1 and 3, I found them rather enjoyable. I wholeheartedly agree that Clone Wars was an atrocity.

I see a lot of you complaining at how they ruined one of the best villains ever by portraying him as whiny *****. Think back to the start of the rise of Hitler. He too started out as a whiny tool. It's not realistic to expect all epic villains to be super bad-asses start to finish.

It's bothered me how many of you are all of Darth Vader's nuts. I understand that he was a great villain yet I fail to see how he can be placed on a pedestal above Sidious (Palpatine).

This would be an accurate claim had Vader not lost the duel on Mustafar to Obi-Wan. In this reality he would have in a few years surpassed Sidious in power, and in accordance with the Rule of Two, defeated his Master and assumed the his rightful place as Dark Lord of the Sith.

However as a result of his defeat on Mustafar his ability to draw on the Force and his overall mobility and dexterity were weakened. Because of this he was never able to defeat his Master and therefore inferior both in strength and cunning.

For my final point I wish to ***** on the original movies, more specifically on Luke Skywalker. How in the hell can he be considered a Jedi Knight. He received brief training from Obi-Wan (a few days worth tops) and a mere 4 years under Yoda. There is no way that this makes him a Jedi Knight.

Yo. I liked the prequel trilogy. My biggest problem was the end of Revenge of the Sith when Darth Vader zombie-walked off of his bondage-gurney and yawned out a 'no'. I'm more bothered by Darth Vader's voice actor in Force Unleashed 2. It sounded...off. Uncanny valley off, ya know? It was similar but just weird.

off-topic: I can't wait for the 3D theatrical re-releases and new Trilogy. Though all I really want is an actual KotOR 3 or, some other flavor of Star Wars single-player RPG.

Before I start I must mention I ducking love the original trilogy,

I didn't mind episode one I actually thought it was pretty good the PSone game was also quite enjoyable (you could kill children with a lightsaber on the tatooine level!!!!), and Darth maul was epic :)

and I'm also one of the few people who will admit to liking Jar jar binks, oh that lucas and his (not so) subtle racism

episode 2 was easily the worst of all of them and ep 3 was just a rush job to tie it all together

BUT WHY DID THEY CHANGE THE STORM TROOPER DESIGN WHY!!!! IT WAS ALWAYS OBVIOUS FROM THE START THE CLONES WERE GUNNA BE STORM TROOPERS

It's not so much that it wasn't plausible for him to be portrayed as a whiny *****, it was probably the fact that they made so many claims in the original trilogy about him and portrayed him into a different character, that being a whiny ***** was so not in character for him.

If the prequels originally focused on him being an older, more mature jedi falling into darkness, that could've worked. Making him an annoying kid, with completely rushed character and plot development? Sorry that doesn't work for me.

1. Lack of Han Solo.
2. Anakin.
3. Anakin.
4. The fact that Lucas managed to get a fantastic actress like Natalie Portman to act like a piece of plywood.
5. Anakin.
6. Surprisingly, not Jar-Jar in the long run. I hated him originally, but over time i've realized he doesn't bother me.
7. Too much cgi makes it look less realistic than the original movies.
8. Anakin.
You forgot Anakin when hes a Teen

But i hated the 1st one boring star wars Ever

Well the "old republic" is supposed to be a sequel (sorta) but the problem is that it's a mmorpg.

Dammit that's another year of my life going to be wasted.

But if you go to the website and check out http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/timeline
It actually explains somethings about the Kotor games. It's got me pretty psyched.

Nice massive assumption there right off the bat..

I haven't seen all of the Star Wars movies but I didn't like the ones I saw much. I have seen 3 of them and only 1 was one of the prequels... I don't mind the Star Wars universe but the movies were meh. I like a few Star Wars games though. Lightsabers are cool.

I agree. This is likely a work of the incompetent George Lucas, trying to interest the younger audiences by making Anakin more "relatable." The last positive contribution Lucas made to Star Wars was its conception imo.
