Why does everyone hate Alistair?

Just curious. He was by far my favorite character from DA:O. I thought he was funny, and his conversations with other party members, especially Wynne and Morrigan, were always hilarious. I noticed an Alistair bashing trend, and I was trying to find out if anyone else actually likes him, and why.

I don't. Mostly because he's the first Bioware male lead NPC to be Not Carth. (Or Anomen, who was even worse.)

Please don't assume every person's opinion based on a "trend". I haven't seen anyone hating Alistair. He's brilliant.

He was, for the majority of the game, alright. The voice-acting was itself good, but I thought the character model didn't really match the voice.

What really turned me against him at the end of the game was his unwillingness to compromise over a certain central decision. I don't have time for that type of crap and for people who think killing people is justice. It's the same reason I can't stand the Asari Justicar Samara in ME2.

I liked Alistair. Partly because he was a brilliant damage sponge when put in the best armor and given the fade shroud shield. He'd draw all of the enemies away while I killed them from behind. And he was funny sometimes.

I too like Alistair. He's the normal kind of funny although he tends to be a bit whiny at times.

I was fine with Alistair when playing a good character, but when you're evil Alistair is a whiny *****.

I don't understand the general hate either. Alistair's a decently written character who (imo) seems to use sarcasm to mask his feelings. Besides, I can't really hate the guy when he's scored the killing blows on the end boss in both my playthroughs so far.

But honestly though, can you really blame him? With the circumstances surrounding this particular decision, I can't say I'd have not done the same.

Just because the people who DO hate him are vocal about it, does not mean everyone hates him. But I believe that hate he garners concerns his behavior after Ostagar. And now I'll go to spoilers for anyone who hasn't played this already.

After Duncan dies, Alistair spends much of his time depressed. Certain fans take this as whining, and not as a strong man who just lost someone he regards as a father figure. Remember that Alistair never knew Maric, only knew that the king had abandoned him with Eamon. And then Eamon abandoned him with the templars once Isolde came into the picture. Duncan showed Alistair some kindness, and the Wardens gave him a sense of feeling and belonging. To lose both sends him reeling, so I think his misery is pretty understandable. Besides, if you play a Human Noble, you get just as many opportunities to say that you want to go rescue your brother, Blight be damned.

All in all, I think Alistair is a great, three-dimensional character. He has flaws and he also has a lot of strength. He was one of my favorites in the game.

That pumped me as well. I get that he was angry but come on, Grey Wardens here. Making personal sacrifices for the good of the land is pretty much what we do.

So I reloaded a previous save and stripped him of all his gear before the encounter, then told him to fuck off.

Other than that though, he was pretty decent. His sense of humour was a nice change.

How are Minsc (and more importantly Boo) not male leads? :p

But yeah, Anomen sucked. No real reason to take him over Aerie or Viconia except for the romance which can get fixed by modding the gender-check off romances anyway :p

I can. He's a Grey Warden. He should recognise that saving Ferelden and the rest of the world from the BDarkspawn comes first. When they're on our doorstep having already obliterated most of the southern end of the country, now is not the time to be getting all pissy for revenge against one of the best military leaders the country has.

Alistair was one of the most likeable characters in the game, with a great sense of humor. If there's anyone I didn't like (among the party members), it would have to be Morrigan. Being a pragmatical ***** is one thing, she's just a douche. A shame to waste Claudia Black's voice on a character like that...

I thought he was ok. Actually, of the male NPC characters, I think I liked him the best. The others just weren't very interesting, but Alistair actually had some character other than "big and grumpy" or "short and drunk."

I'd rate him above Carth; I wasn't a big fan of Carth. Let's not even mention Anomen...
Atton I liked better though, because he was a hell of a lot more clever, competent, and tough than he appeared

I loved Alistair. I loved his voice and the sort of dumb way he deals with everything. He got that kind of child-like innocence about him in that he doesn't know exactly how to deal with everything that's happening around him, but at the same time you know that given the chance and shown how to do everything Alistair could pull it all off.

I thought he was fine until he turned into a whiney little ***** at a crucial moment as I was trying to do the right thing.

When I showed mercy to Loghain.... he threw a hissy fit, stormed off and took my Superior Dragonscale armour with him, the little Emo fuck

I note that everyone on the thread so far has actually liked him. As I did. He was hilarious and very real to me, not to mention an excellent tank. Where are you getting this "hatred" thing from? The only dislike I've seen is towards Morrigan, which I find more understandable (Though I thought she was OK). My least favorite would be Sten. Big dull bruiser who doesn't say much.
