Why does everyone hate Alistair?

I liked Alistair for most of the game. The fact that the death of Duncan got him down seemed very natural. The only thing about him I did find annoying was at the end of the game. On my first playthrough I decided to make him marry Anora and become king, and convinced him to go along with it. And even though he had agreed that it was for the best and that he'd go along with the plan, he still came complaining about it to me on three different occasions. Dude, you said you'd play along, so play the fuck along already. Don't go blaming me for a something you agreed to do.

I note that everyone on the thread so far has actually liked him. As I did. He was hilarious and very real to me, not to mention an excellent tank. Where are you getting this "hatred" thing from? The only dislike I've seen is towards Morrigan, which I find more understandable (Though I thought she was OK). My least favorite would be Sten. Big dull bruiser who doesn't say much.
I concur, I really liked alistair's Dialogue and the character himself. I put him up there with Jolee Bindo, HK-47, Tali and Urdnot Wrex. They all made me laugh or feel for them (Jolee and Alistair made me do both). I didn't hate any member of the cast really.

EDIT: I found morrigan and Alistair's walking around dialogue was great. Pretty much everyone and Alistair was just good fun.

Alistair was one of the most likeable characters in the game, with a great sense of humor. If there's anyone I didn't like (among the party members), it would have to be Morrigan. Being a pragmatical ***** is one thing, she's just a douche. A shame to waste Claudia Black's voice on a character like that...
Oh wow, that was Claudia Black? Well that explains why she absolutely freakin' rocked. I absolutely loved Morrigan through and through, even after the betrayal. Once you rationalized through it and accepted her proposition for what it was, it wasn't hard to still like her.

But honestly though, can you really blame him? With the circumstances surrounding this particular decision, I can't say I'd have not done the same.
Well, that's kind of the point, different people will relate to different characters. It wouldn't be any fun if everybody agreed on what was morally correct in every situation. The plurality of conceptions of moral good in Bioware games is probably their defining characteristic, it's a measure of success. Well, that aspect was definitely more pronounced in their last few games, to be honest I have to say its a new thing in gaming generally and definitely to be welcomed. You have to go back quite a ways to find anything comparatively complex.

Sten is one of those "love him or hate him" characters I think. I thought he was cool, but you really don't get to see that unless you spend a lot of time with him. When you meet him at first he doesn't like you, and he's not exactly the most talkative fellow to begin with, so it's easy to dismiss him right away in which case you'll probably never get to like him. But if you have him tag along on your adventures and get to know the way he thinks a little bit, he becomes a lot more interesting.

I liked Alistair. His witty humor kept the game interesting to me, and he was almost always in my party.

Because the best way to get on his good side is to give him a hug and a pat on the back while whispering,

"There, there, now dry those tears"

Everytime he starts crying about duncan being killed.

I like Alistair for the most part because he's nice and witty, thought slightly over modest. He's annoying towards the end when he gets so whiny though.

"Boohoohoo, I don't want to be king! Must I marry her? BAAAAAAAAW!"

I loved Alistair becomes he reminds me so much of the boyfriends I've had; cute, a bit on the dense side, and with an ability to make me double over with laughter. But yeah he was a bit whiny at times(also similar to some boyfriends...), especially after Ostagar when I was really close to throwing him out of the party alltogether. I've learned now not to bring him along for times when I know I'm going to go the douche-route. He can stay in camp and be my little lovebug^^
So yeah I can see why people who do NOT want to bang him can hate him. And he broke my heart in the end so I had to reload and fix it. The only major decision where I actually reloaded only because I didn't like the outcome.

Maker yes. "Oh, I don't want to be king of an entire land and have a really hot wife! This sucks! I can let her do all the work and reap all of the benefits but IT STILL SUCKS."

(Or Anomen, who was even worse.)
How are Minsc (and more importantly Boo) not male leads? :p
Minsc and Boo transcend petty narrative notions concerning the importance of characters to the story.
How about Sarevok and Yoshimo then? :p I thought Yoshimo was an excellent male character who actually got better after he permanently died.

Sarevok's a complete badass as well. From old antagonist to dead to reluctant hero and then slowly coming around to realise the folly of the actions in his previous life, feeling real guilt over how he threw away his allies (especially Tamoko) and changing his alignment to Chaotic Good.

Also bonus points for the impeccable voice acting on the line "I live! Flesh and blood and bone! I AM ALIVE! Hahahaha! I swore I would scratch and crawl my way back into the world of the living, and I have done it!"

Also Jan Jansen: Greatest story teller ever.

I didn't really feel much for either of them. I hardly ever used Sarevok because by the time you can recruit him your party's pretty much set, and it's all high/epic levels anyway, and you really need casters more than fighters.

Also Jan Jansen: Greatest story teller ever.
Jan was great, and the only reason to ever take Anomen in a party is so that you can listen to Jan take the piss out of him.

A larger % of people hate him, because a larger % of people want to play the game "evil".

If Alistar had been a character that could go both evil AND good and you could take him to the evil side with you, I think people would have liked him more. But when you DO play evil, you end up leaving him out of your party.

I certainly don't hate him. He's witty, but the wittiness is just to hide insecurity. He's vulnerable, but loyal and strong.

If there's someone I dislike, it has to be Sten. He's just extremely one-dimensional, even when you max your rep with him, and you learn more of him, he's just not very deep.
I dislike Leliana at times too. Though she was adorable most of the time, I got tired of her constant religious unicorns and butterflies attitude. Zevran was somewhat boring too.

My favourite was Morrigan, I think. I loved her bitchy attitude. She really reminded me of some past girlfriends. And even though she was bitchy and arrogant, that only served to hide whar Morrigan really is - an isolated, lonely woman, that doesn't really know all that much about other people.

Well... he is kind of a pussy when he's not in battle.
It's not that I don't like him, I just don't care about him. He's not a very compelling character.
