He's lovable and occasionally dim-witted, so I feel a certain fondness for Alistair, but I can see why people might not like him. But hey, at least he's not Carth. Alistair does stop whining and being paranoid when you're on good enough terms with him. Carth... Not so much.

Everyone I know who play DA:O (which is only one, if you don't count online) and she says she likes Alistar, but as I said. She.

How about Sarevok and Yoshimo then? :p I thought Yoshimo was an excellent male character who actually got better after he permanently died.
I didn't really feel much for either of them. I hardly ever used Sarevok because by the time you can recruit him your party's pretty much set, and it's all high/epic levels anyway, and you really need casters more than fighters.
I generally kept a party of five for most of SoA so I could bring along people for their specific quests (Cernd for the druid grove, Nalia for de'Arnise keep etc.) so when Sarevok turned up, I finally settled on my six.

Plus, turning down Sarevok because he's a fighter is crazy. He's one of the most powerful characters in the game. His Deathbringer attack thing can hit for 150-250 damage when it connects. Chuck an improved haste on the party, have him Greater Whirlwind, spec him into Halberds and give him the Ravager+6 and watch him tear the shit out of everything that stands in your way. He's an absolute beast.

Plus I liked the idea of having me, Imoen and Sarevok in one party.

I don't. Mostly because he's the first Bioware male lead NPC to be Not Carth. (Or Anomen, who was even worse.)
Kaiden?
Kaiden is Carth. All he needed was a kid he left behind and they'd be identical.

Then cast one Dragon's Breath and watch everything on screen die all at once. Or, y'know, when the Time Stop finishes and they actually get to do something.

Mages scale up far higher than fighters, even fighters with fancy specials. Forget Sarevok, Imoen is the real beast of the family.

People hate Alistair? But he's funny! And flawed yet likeable!

I've never emphasized with a character so much for years.
He is actually one of the most depth.... if not the most depth character in the game.
Uses humor to hide his troubled past and it always comes back to haunt him.... and I do NOT help. Not to mention I -insert bad deed here-. Plus he carries my blood dragon armor. (2nd favorite armor in the game {2nd favoirte!}) So I like him. Even if he won't give shayle a hug.

This!

Although I have seen a few people say he was a dick basically, not really seen it justified!
When I first met him in the game I thought he was gonna be a pansy but I really liked him, so much so I explored the romance line with him first.

The only thing I don't like about him is how his facial expression goes from gormlessly happy to unbearably sad with the slightest change of tone in his voice...

It's like he could be talking about something that genuinely made him happy in his life, switch it round to something that's only marginally sad and he'll look like he's close to sodding tears...

But beyond that I had no issue with the character really. poor use of two static facial expressions or not, he was a fun character the majority of the time and good to bounce off of for fun.

It's Sten that I really freaking hate...

Just curious. He was by far my favorite character from DA:O. I thought he was funny, and his conversations with other party members, especially Wynne and Morrigan, were always hilarious. I noticed an Alistair bashing trend, and I was trying to find out if anyone else actually likes him, and why.
I actually thought he was pretty much what you expect from a guy who had a crappy life: He hide his problems behind humor, and is generally only happy when The PC becomes friends with him (Or lovers if you are a female).

He often sounds like, he is trying to figure out what to say, and you could pretty much have fun with him.

Also, I actually felt bad when
his half-sister pretty much hated him for something that wasn't his fault. Also she insulted my city elf character. I was half tempted to make her children orphans.

He pretty awesome with a giant claymore though.

Honestly my favourite characters were Zevran, Oghren and Alistair, everything that came out of their mouths was pure gold - and I actually did the do with Zevran just because he was so brilliant.

I hated Morrigan - After a while she wasn't a mage with her tits out; she was a whiny emo girl who complained about everything - I told her to fuck off about 3/4 through the game; She just moaned and moaned about every little thing.

Did anyone else pick up on the Morrigan being a whiny emo atheist by the way? - I was somewhat angry about that; It's a conversation she has with Leliana about the Maker,

I'm an Atheist and I'm not a whiny emo kid who complains about every little thing.

Lol, irony.

Alistair has some definitive emo qualities. I would say a ton more than FFVII Cloud. But he is less emo than Advent Children Cloud.

Alistair was probably my least favourite DA:O character.
Morrigan - She was the token Emo.

I liked him.

Sure, he complained a lot, but unlike most people, he had a damn good reason to complain. And even during the end of the game during a pretty big event, I can understand his anger and frustration.

Losing the first and only father figure you've ever had to some douche who betrayed everyone would get anyone to complain. Anyone who doesn't is just a heartless dick.

And I can understand why he would get all pissy when I showd Logain mercy. You spent basically the entire game getting back at him and trying to take him out of the picture, just to show mercy at the last second feels like you betrayed Alistair as well.

And if your best friend who you've been traveling with for ages showed mercy to the guy who killed your only father figure, the only person who has shown kindness to you, you would be full of blind rage as well, and would most likely storm out the same way he did.

If you played the human noble origin, your family gets betrayed by a close friend. And when that happened, I wanted that douche to die, and die a horrible death. And when I finally found him, thats exactly what I did. So I know why Alistair wanted Logain dead. And who am I to deny him what he wants when I did the same thing to the person who betrayed me and my family?

He grew on me, and I was woeful when I stopped him from being king and he left forever, which I didn't think he would do. Morrigan and him are great, arguing all the time.

As a pure-class mage, I was the real beast of the family thank you very much.

A Robe of Vecna and Staff of the Magi helped as well.

So yes, mages scale better, but unless you're going for a party of Bhaalspawn(as Mage or Sorcerer), Imoen, Nalia, Jan, Edwin and Aerie which frankly I think is a smelly setup, you're probably going to have one or two melee fighter guys in there. May as well have Sarevok.
