Now, right off the bat let me tell you, I'm not trying to bash metal here. The only music threads I've seen here are all "what metal bands do you like" and they're all the same handful of bands. What happened to people liking varied types of music? What happened to Classic rock? What happened to Alternative? What happened to Punk rock? Does nobody in the gaming community care about anything other than sub-par lyrics masked by the Open E and power cords of metal?
Fuck do I really have to do this again? Damn repeat threads.

Alright it's obvious you don't like metal nor have you listened to enough to tell there is an imense amount of talent in the genre. I can tell because you said "sub-par lyrics masked by open E power chords" what you have here is generic, crappy metal. Such as Nu-metal. If you were so inclined to forsake your ignorance and move past the crappy metal of today, you might find the truely talented metal bands of the late 70's and 80's. Many have been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, I say this because you mentioned classic rock. And while I"m on the topic...what makes classic rock so special again? Surely the the one-beat drummers and piles of love songs...no there must be something else...oh yes the guitar...now what do most classic rock songs sound like on guitar...figure that one out yourself. Now if I were so inclined I'd search through my 500+ albums of metal bands to find some amazing guitar work...but I'm lazy. So I'll suggest you listen to "a musical dirge" by Testament,as well as "Urotsukidoji" by Testament. They are both amazing songs, both instrumentals. For lyrics, try anything by Black Sabbath, or most things by Megadeth, one example "The World Needs A Hero".

Look I could go on but I've already done this in two other threads so I'm just going to tell you to report back when you understand how ignorant your being by say Metal has nothing more than sub-par lyrics and open E power chords. Oh and one last song you need to listen to, this one most of all for the lyrics: Disciple by Slayer, off the album God Hates us All.

Drones since the dawn of time
Compelled to live your sheltered lives
Not once has anyone ever seen
Such a rise of pure hypocracy
I'll instigate I'll free your mind
I'll show you what I've known all this time

God Hates Us All, God Hates Us All
You know it's true God hates this place
You know it's true he hates this race

Homicide-Suicide
Hate heals, you should try it sometime
Strive for Peace with acts of war
The beauty of death we all adore
I have no faith distracting me
I know why your prayers will never be answered

God Hates Us All; God Hates Us All
He Fuckin' hates me

Pessimist, Terrorist targeting the next mark
Global chaos feeding on hysteria
Cut throat, slit your wrist, shoot you in the back fair game
Drug abuse, self abuse searching for the next high
Sounds a lot like hell is spreading all the time
I'm waiting for the day the whole world fucking dies

I never said I wanted to be God's disciple
I'll never be the one to blindly follow

Man made virus infecting the world
Self-destruct human time bomb
What if there is no God would you think the fuckin' same
Wasting your life in a leap of blind faith
Wake the fuck up can't ignore what I say
I got my own philosophy

I hate everyone equally
You can't tear that out of me
No segregation, separation
Just me in my world of enemies

I never said I wanted to be God's disciple
I'll never be the one to blindly follow
I'll never be the one to bear the cross-disciple

I reject this fuckin' race
I despise this fuckin' place
Agreed.

And anyway... nowadays it's uasually an open D, C or A string, not exclusively E.

This is why. I've never heard an indie band sing about Jagermeister and pirates.
More wenches and mead!

Generally speaking, the type of people who tend to expend great effort gaming (meaning the Escapist, and beyond) also have a tendency to feel socially outcast, despite the growing popularity of the media. This breeds several outcomes, one of which being a backlash against society - something metal has been known for since its inception.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to ALL of us, but it's not like it's rocket science why nerds like metal.

So come take a drink and drown your sorrows,
and all of our fears will be gone till tomorrow.
Have no regrets and live for the day,

My music taste isn't defined by genre or bands. It is defined by songs. True, most of my favourites are metal. But it's not the only genre in my list of songs that I like. I also like a bit of techno (if it's good) as well.

Bands I listen to: Dimmu Borgir, Killswitch Engage, Psyclon Nine, Sirenia, Parkway Drive, Sonic Syndicate, Nightwish, Epica, Deathstars, Arcturus, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Alizee (not a band, but I like her voice), Within Temptation, Samael, Trivium, Cradle of Filth, Souldrainer, Immortal.

Bands I refuse to listen to: Nirvana, AC/DC, Disturbed (except one song), Linkin Park (except their old stuff, which I like), KISS, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Satyricon, Pantera, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Three Days Grace, Green Day, The Ramones, Bring Me The Horizon, System of a Down/Serj Tankian, Velvet Revolver, Rage Against The Machine... you get the idea.

You'd be surprised how many people give me a funny look because I refuse to listen to music from the latter list. And there's a good reason I refuse to listen to it: I hate it! But apparently I'm weird because of that.

Funny, I could say the exact same about rap and hippity hop.

You can say that about pretty much anything, fact is, the Hip Hop I listen to is full of rad lyrics and clever production.

People can call thier favorite music whatever they like. All of those bands have elements of what can be considered metal. (i.e. loud guitars, screaming, in your face attitude)

Posing in Bob Dylan style black and white photo with a cigarette hanging trendily out your mouth and listing off a bunch of obscure underground indie bands you're 'into' does not make you an authoritive voice on music.
Well, not to be a chode, but that's Ringo Starr in my picture. But that's neither here nor there.
Anyway, I didn't claim to be an authoritative voice on music. I'm merely saying that calling bands metal that clearly aren't clutters understanding. I mean, you don't call a band that uses synths and guitars an electronic band, right? So you shouldn't call a band incorporating a few metal elements metal.
(For the record, none of those bands I listed spare perhaps BTMI! are really obscure.)

The other 20% is made up of whatever else was put on the poll.

But surely the beauty of having different musical styles and genres is the ability to blend them together... to not always have an exact definion what kind of music it is.

Most of the biggest, most succesful artists are the ones who take many different styles and put thier own stamp on it.

The fact that it can't be genre defined makes it great.

For example: Queens of the Stone Age = Stoner Rock, Metallica = Metal

But some of the QOTSA stuff is more metal sounding than a lot of Metallica's stuff, and Metallica have some stoner rock riffs in thier 90s material.. It doesn't matter if people don't know what to call it as long as they enjoy it.

What genre is Bowie? The Beatles? U2? Tool? They all cover many styles and the music world is a better place for it.

I'm not a huge metal fan but I do end up listening to it whether I want to or not. My mom (yes my mom) is a metal head and will go on the computer and browse music video sites and watch videos for a couple of hours. I wouldn't mind it so much but, she tends to do this while I'm trying to sleep. Me? I like classic rock especially Bowie, Queen and YES.
Fuck. Is your mom hot?
