Why don't you do drugs?

The main reason I don't do drugs is because enough people have told me that it's bad for me that I just took their word for it. Quite a few of those people were recreational drug users at some point.

I'd use the excuse that my religion is a factor, but it's not. I can rattle off a list of fellow church-goers who've fondled Mary Jane every now and then -- and a few of them were in the pulpit.

Just because someone uses drugs doesn't necessarily make them bad people. What would make them bad people is if they tried to steal my shit. I have no problem with drug users as long as they don't try to steal my shit. If you try to steal my shit, the least of your problems is gonna be where your next fix is coming from.

I don't do drugs simply because I don't understand the need to get high. If life is so hard and stressful that you have to get high to get away from it, you need to find another way to deal with your problems. If you just do it to do it, I hope nobody ever has to hear you ***** about not having money or your financial problems. Drugs feed into themselves. I'm down so I'm going to get high, because I bought the drugs I don't have money to pay power, now i'm down cuz I can't pay power, to escape I'm going to do some more drugs....etc. I choose to deal with my problems and enjoy brighter things in my life that don't cost me the same amount of money it would cost for an hour of therapy or more.
That and I use my money on games....can't afford to play games and get high.

Let's see here:
1. I have severe dust allergies, I don't need to be putting smoke in already sensitive lungs (As you can guess, I don't smoke either).
2. Even if my allergies allowed it, I don't have the money to support cigarettes, let alone drugs.
3. And if I had the money, I have other, more important, expenses.
4. I've seen the dumb things people do when wasted. DO NOT WANT.
5. The kind of drug's you're talking about are illegal. I don't want a criminal record screwing up my future because of a poor choice that I made now.

The main thing i see about drugs such as weed, alcohol or nos (laughing gas), is that they are social lubricants, they free up your inhibitions a bit and mean you are part of a shared experience which makes bonding easier, faster and more memorable, also they definatly allow you to see something with fresh eyes, which is why they are sometimes, especially weed, associated with creativity.

I only have used drugs with peers and at parties and i seem to always be aware of my actions, ive never blacked out and i think iv got to the stage where i could recognise if i was going too far... I would definatly recommend trying them with friends but never letting it get to the point where you do them alone, i will never smoke cigarettes or do anything dangerous or really addictive as i dont really trust myself with them, but would try something new after researching its potential effects.

And about cost, a spliff can be about the cost of a pint and nos is 25p a pop, but you cant overdose, so i can see why people might go overboard, and definatly i have seen people waste ridiculous money on cigarettes and personal use drugs...

i guess its where you draw the line and where you trust yourself to go before stopping but i wouldnt rule out all drugs on moral standings without trying or realising that drugs have been done for milenia, and some are legal in many countries such as holland which does show that they can seemlessly blend with the fabric of a community without being a bad thing and actually benefitting people, but just my 2 cents anyway

I'll link a website and this is basically why I don't do them.

http://www.talktofrank.com/ = look up your drug of choice.

I tried weed once or twice and it was kind of weird and horrible. Made me light-headed and out of control, so basically I rather get drunk without the horrible sick feeling. Alcohol isn't the worst drug. It has no real long time affects, all the other drugs do and that's is why I really don't like them. I have friends who are *far-out maaaaaan* even when they aren't stoned, times to many I asked if they were stoned and they weren't just been affected by the drug damaging thier brain.

I might come across harsh and I really don't want to :) I personally wouldn't and I don't think that you should stop, it's your choice. ^^
Judging by the literary quality of your post, I'd say alcohol has done much more damage to your brain than you assume. Do I sound harsh? Well, think of it as a heated, frustrated response to your superficial judgement and assumption that these "far-out" friends of yours were "brain-damaged" through smoking weed. There is no difference between my above assumption, and the crude assumption you make of your friends.

Alcohol is one of the most damaging drugs you can put in your body. My mother is a chronic alcoholic. Even after a year of sobriety, she can barely function in society. Her memory is riddled with holes, her coordination skills are non-existent and even now, she'd still do anything to get her hands on a drink. She has stolen money from my friends and family, and abused my father and sister, all because of your lovely, innocent, LEGAL alcohol.

Weed, on the other hand, to my (well-researched) knowledge, has never hurt a living soul.

I'm a recreational and anthropological-shamanic drug user, with an avid interest in natural hallucinogens, such as shrooms and peyote. I have tried almost every single commonly known psychoactive substance, including alcohol, and I can honestly say that I have NEVER been as fucked up on any substance as I have been on alcohol.

I use weed regularly. I have never experienced any problems related to memory, speech, learning or any other cognitive functions from this use. This applies to my more exotic experimentations as well.

As for the website you mentioned, I'm well aware of the anti-drug propaganda being propagated throughout education systems worldwide. "Just Don't Do It", "Kids! Don't Try Drugs" etc.

In today's drug propaganda, the facts presented are often correct, BUT, they stem from extreme studies (forcing a group of monkeys to inhale marijuana smoke 24 hours a day), or a rare, one-time occurence (a boy with an obscure allergy to THC, or with a family history of schizophrenia, has long term health problems from repeated use). I mention these only for illustrative purposes, they are not necessarily based on fact, but the concept remains true.

Have you ever opened up a package of over-the-counter aspirin, and read the little pamphlet inside?
You may be surprised by the long list of potential health problems aspirin may cause you. "May Cause Death" is often included as well.

As a counterpoint to the website you mentioned, I recommend those of you ignorant in these matters to visit a little site called...

www.erowid.org

... and educate yourselves on the relationship between humans and psychoactives without being tainted by biased pseudo-scientific propaganda.

Remember, everything with a psychoactive effect on your brain is a drug (coffee, aspirin, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana). Everything should be used responsibly, and in moderation. I am a firm believer that if only children were educated from a stance of "if you must use, then here's some reliable information on how to use responsibly" rather than the scare tactic of "Don't Use! You'll get brain damage and DIE!", there would be significantly fewer tragic accidents in relation to common recreational drugs these days.

Not to mention that a lot of responsible, educated users, such as myself, would no longer have to bear the social stigma associated with this one particular aspect of our recreational activities.

Learn first, then judge. Question all your sources. Question me. Question Erowid. Question Razomka.
In the end, the decision you make is your own. If you simply have no curiosity towards this particular subject, then don't force yourself to pretend that you do. If, however, you are curious/have been curious, but have been scared away by parents, teachers and MTV adverts... then don't let that stop you from pursuing your curiosity. Life is about learning, every new experience helps you become wiser. There was once a time when alcohol was prohibited in several countries (including my own, I'm not American). There was a large propaganda campaign against it too. There still is. Tobacco was once socially acceptable. Today it is becoming increasingly frowned upon. One day, I believe marijuana will be legal in this country. A few years ago, shrooms were legal, they have been used here in shamanic rites since the dawn of our culture. Now you can get penalized for the possession of something that grows wild in the autumn fields.

Attitudes shift, propaganda is disproved or re-written, our view of what is, and what is not a drug is malleable by the forever changing paradigm of our current culture.

So the next time you come across someone who simply states "Drugs = Bad", question them, demand concrete evidence, question their sources, research the history of the drug and its use in human culture, question the bias of the speaker, research all the available perspectives, and most important of all, THINK. It may sound like a lot of work, but by the end of it, you will be a little less ignorant, and a little more capable of defending yourself in a potential future debate.

I'll end my rant here. I'll be curious to hear what other people think about this topic. :)

I have token a few prescribed medications, drank a little wine at new years, and drink coffee every now and again.

I tried them once, and didn't care for the experience. I became ill shortly after imbibing and felt off for days afterwards. Even my worst experience with booze has resulted in a shorter recovery time than THAT, and it involved picking a fight with three men and getting booted in the face for my trouble.

Simple...drugs that help you get through the day are there for weak willed individuals who can't face the rigors of life without some crutch there to support them.

I realize some of them are necessary. There are manic depressives out there that need anti-depressant pills and I can understand that, it's a required drug.

I'm talking about things like cigarettes, alcohol (not a drug, but still), weed, coke, and etcetera...no, just...no. I'd rather deal with my problems myself, thank you. I know I'm coming off as rude, but living with someone who smoked weed for a few years and seeing the pitiful, addicted moron he's become has given me a strong aversion to anything related to it.

I'm not against drugs. I'm against the douchey drug users that think I care about hearing what happened to them when they take them.

Drug usage is like taking a shit. It may feel incredibly great but I don't want to hear about your experiences.

Smoked some Pot a while back and said to myself "This isn't nearly as awesome as the stoner down the street said it was." and after two more tries and the same internal response and a foolish blackmail attempt by the retard who sold it to me I said "Fuck this" and never went back. This all happened in my freshman year of high school for those who are wondering.

Why waste cash on drugs when I can buy video games and manga instead and not have my supply of them be depleted at any time?

Plus it's awesome to tell drunk people what they did the night before.

I don't do them simply because they don't interest me. I won't spite a person for drinking or smoking anything, but I won't participate.

I like to keep a clear head.

I don't do drugs because they're extremely bad for your health and it goes against my religion.

If you want to be taken seriously in this and any other matter I would suggest refraining from insulting people with different views then yours and calling people ignorant for not thinking like you think.

No, I didn't read your whole post. After insulting someone directly for not even insulting you OR drug users, he was poking fun at his friends, and openly saying he didn't mean to be taken offensively and that he knows you can make your own choices Topping it off with calling people with different beliefs ignorant i decided the rest wasn't worth reading.

Clam down.

Stop insulting people.

Never use the word ignorant.

You want to be taken seriously in a serious discussion follow those rules.

To answer the question - i take drugs recreationally - interpret that how you will. The reason I DONT take drugs is when I have to be functional such as when im working, before work, family gatherings etc. See - its possible to be both, it just takes self control =P

OT: Oceanwilde, you talk alot of sense, maybe the most in the entire thread - you state sources and form your arguments well. I have read a few of the posts on this topic - some views are misinformed others are from extremist viewpoints. I think the hardest thing about drug education is that there is so often only a choice between two extreme views. The Drugs = bad and drugs = good arguments.

In reality it is all a grey area; Drugs are neither good nor bad but a mixture of both. As oceanwilde said, even the definition of a drug can shift over time. It depends on who is using them and how/when. Drugs are there to expand your conciousness - in the words of Bill Hicks "its the only freedom we have left" - drugs let you see the world in a different way. Different, not better - not worse. To dispel some negative propaganda watchSuper high me.

Of course, moderation is important with all things and there isn't a thing on this planet which is not damaging if taken to excess. There will always be people who take things too far - you can kill yourself by drinking too much water - but that doesnt mean water should be banned.

Another point for all those people that claim that drugs destroy/damage your brain - you might want to research the personal lives of some very influential and respected scientists and artists such as sigmund freud. Also, some of you non-drug users - i've noticed your spelling's not up to much - perhaps you should work on your own faults before judging others.

Because I don't need to wreck my body or mind to have fun. Don't get me wrong, most of the parties that I go to have lots of that shit going on, but seriously, you need to get high to have fun or loosen up? This doesn't strike you as strange? However, to each, their own, and I actually support the legalization of weed. Seeing the after-effects of drinking/smoking has turned me off even more towards participating in such activities myself.
