my 2 cents.
Stigma makes (good) alcohol sexy and easily sociable, whereas pot isn't so neat as that. I used to say that smoking up makes me less inclined to do my work (which is more important to me than what I to do hang out), but when I drink, I already commit myself to not working for that evening anyway. Really, if pot were legal, I'd have it around too, but I'm not willing to go through the work to procure it, ect.
What I love most about my stimulant of choice isn't drunkenness (physical), but how I feel when I'm enjoying a drink (mental). It's simply an instant mindset. I can enjoy a cigarette or cigarillo, but again, because it's not cool to smoke, I only do so on odd occasions.
In short, it's not simply that social perception dictates what I can enjoy. The substance's pleasure is only secondary to the social pleasure that I access through the drug. It's all social currency, which is just fine. What the drug does isn't as important as what it gives you...no different from voyeuristically looking at Vogue or MTV Cribs, ect. It's just that the former actually can be a way to extend your social magnaminity, whereas the latter gets you nowhere further than pacification with your shitty life.
Anyway, let's keep that tangent from continuing.
