actually punk isn't very diverse really, it's more or less 3 chord rock. you can divide it pretty much into a few bands and the rest branch off from there
there's the big 2 which are Ramones and The Sex Pistols, then there is the major players which are The Clash and Dead Kennedys. you can possibly add Black Flagg or even the descendants in there but the last one really comes from the bigger ones
How is that not diverse? One group looks back to Brian Wilson; another looks to ska and reggae. And that's leaving out the bands that looked outside the rhythm & blues roots of the rest of rock music like the Pogues did with Irish traditional music and the Mekons did with Appalachia American country.
I think you just don't know enough about punk music to talk about it--you should explore it some, especially if when it comes to metal you like Judas Priest or Motorhead or Iron Maiden before they got Bruce Dickinson (at least the little I heard--their vocalist previous to him seems much more rock'n'roll).
i've heard some older Priest and Maiden, they actually got rid of the original leader singer of Maiden cause they'd be doomed to sound like a punk band for the rest of their career and they figured it was a death sentence for them
now where the diversity comes from is that every punk band out there can be called a clone of one of the founding members of the punk movement. yes they all had different influences at the beginning, the fact is most bands haven't really changed their sound over the years and have kept the same sound really.
now if you take a look at metal from the same time period and the metal of today, you do find some similarities in the bands but you also find a much different sound and output of the bands.
actually if you wanted to see true outsider art in the music field, you would have to look at Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten or Throbbing Gristle and a bit later Skinny Puppy
No, you wouldn't. You wouldn't have to go further into punk than Riot Grrl. Don't confuse 'outsider' with 'unorthodox'.
i'm not confusing it, bands like Throbbing Gristle and Kraftwerk were the outisders at the time, they were making a whole new genre of music and were and frankly still are misunderstood
actually you do see it at other shows as well, jazz, rock and the like. it's a way to show off the skills of the musician. sure some people might call it the musical equivalent of wanking but frankly everyone i've seen say that, especially the bands, are just jealous of the fact that someone can do that.
I think it's more that, unlike jazz and to a much lesser extent than rock, they're tired of the fans of those musicians acting like their music and their musical taste is superior just because it's more technical ;-D
Like I said--you never see someone who plays pibroch music on the bagpipes take the same attitude towards people who like "Amazing Grace" as some metal fans will towards those who are fans of other genres.
it's not, out of the newer bands that come out that decide not to do solos or feature a solo by any member of the band, you don't hear many musicians going "wow the dude in that band is freaking amazing" or you don't hear guitar magazines going all gaga over them
if you look at a list of guitar gods, they are mostly metal guitarists and frankly listening to a great guitarist shred is simply amazing. jazz guitarists are in the same rank as them because both forms are overly complex and technical
as for bagpipes, most people don't know any bagpipe songs and frankly most pipers aren't very good at suggesting one, so people only ask for what they know
as for it grinding to a halt, it really doesn't, most of the people will just watch and listen and admire the musician for doing that and give them the respect that they deserve doing something like that
Like I said--grinding to a halt. It's a matter of opinion. Of course most of the people there will react the way you said: there's a connection between metal fans and people at metal shows ;-D
take a look at tool when they play, usually they give all the musicians a bit of a solo during the show and really the pit doesn't grind to a halt but everyone else will sit and watch and then go nuts after they finish playing or hitting a great rift
