Hails to that! I raise a tankard in your honor, sir!
I clink my three pint tankard to yours and drunkenly spill ale down my three foot beard.

Now where did I put my battle axe of headbanging +10...?
'Tis my mistake. I borrowed it for the Necrophagist concert and never returned it. XD Shame on me!

elaborate on this.

I love the music I listen to. It brings me up when I'm down, it makes me feel amazing. I'm very passionate about the music I love.

So what makes you any different then me....who loves Trance?

You, sir, deserve a hi-five and a bag of Skittles.
And you deserve a fine tankard of beer blessed by Odin.

I do not understand this attitude that metal is somehow solely about pent up frustration, anger and self pity.

Anyone who has ever actually been in the pit at an Iron Maiden or Metallica gig knows that metal is one big fucking CELEBRATION.

I can't think of any time I feel happier or more calm and content spiritually than when I'm jumping around like a primal ape with some metal blaring.
Friggin' exactly! Everything from Mournful Congregation to Slipknot to the aforementioned Iron Maiden, it's all a big friggin' celebration.

A celebration of what, many dumbfounded onlookers ask?

A celebration of AWESOME.

As a metal fan, specifically a death/black metal fan, I find that I have to defend the talent and overall awesomeness of my genre more than, say, a classic rock fan has to. Too many people hear death/black metal and think it is purely mindless racket, whilst missing the technical talent death metal bands have.

I'll be honest - the reason I don't like metal is probably because I have a strong aversion to loud, sharp noises.

Screaming really gets on my nerves, for instance.
It's why I project an anti-baby field.
I'm fine with babies. When they scream, it tends to be for perfectly logical reasons, and generally easily resolved. Their parents, on the other hand...

But yes, I see and agree with your point. Of course, if I am going to attribute the dominance of metal/hardcore to demographics, I have to make the disclaimer that I am on old fart who is much to old for these kids and their loud rock music. Like most people my age, I like the music that was current when I was young and fail to connect with what is going on in music today. My one link to the current music scene is my sister, who is, for all intents and purposes, 15 years younger than her actual age. It's thanks to her that I know about Bassnectar and the Glitch Mob.

Because gamers are not main-stream and most gamers are white.
I know far more whiteys who listen to 'Fiddy Cent' or Kanye West than to Lamb of God or Opeth.

Also, Iron Maiden and Metallica have consistently been two of the biggest touring bands worldwide for decades, still selling out stadiums and albums in the age of arenas and Ipods.

That's pretty mainstream to me.

Personally I like to listen punk, ska, reggae, metal, drum and bass, and trance when I'm playing some games.

And kudos to you. Metal is one of the few genres today that still requires a lot of talent to pull off.

How things change--at one time, metalheads would pound on gamers and nerds for being dorks.
You know, the more I think about that, the more right you are. I do have to wonder though if there are still old subsets of metal listeners that would still wallop us gaming geeks. Nobody ever said nerds make up a large portion of metal's fanbase.

I loathe you.

Would you like to get on stage with Cannibal Corpse and see if you can do any better?

Not sure if it's been said, but to be blunt, because gamers (or at least, people on [gaming] forums) tend to be smarter than the people you meet in real-life.

"Wow, that's an arrogant thing to say!"

Well...
The thing is that metal isn't a very accessible genre. You will surely know people who say "it's just a bunch of noise" or "I can scream in a microphone really loud too". Yes you could, but it wouldn't be metal. This mostly boils down to the point that "most people" are stupid. They don't care about music; the 'music' they want is a tune they can hum along with after hearing the song once. AKA, accessible music. Metal generally tends to be about more serious encounters in life and emotions/experiences "most people" never have. It's sad, but they can't relate to something that has actual depth.

"That's all fine and well, but how does that tie in with internet gaming forums?"

It's simple, really. I'm not saying there aren't stupid people in games, it's just that the people who have the drive to actually go to forums like this one and talk about more meaningful stuff are also usually the smarter type of folks, ergo, they take metal over pop. Which basically brings me back to what I said in the first place - especially on the internet, if you look for smart people, you're going to find them.

That's just part of my theory, anyway. At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy freak; once you realize some things, you'll see it's all connected.

As a disclaimer, if you think I'm an arrogant elitist sonnova - I am.

See, you just did it again. You said something terrible. You assumed that I was saying that metal didn't require talent. No, my issue was the fact that you derided pretty much every other music genre. You made a sweeping condemnation of other styles and artists. That's a very dumb thing.

The thing is that metal isn't a very accessible genre
Actually, compared to a lot of things, it is.

Well, not a whole lot actually because I love trance too, especially the old school stuff.

I'll still pop on Energy 52- Cafe Del Mar to get people going at house parties. What a tune.

But back the the point...

I said they tend to be more passionate, which implies most of the time but not always.

I think metal speaks to people on an intense emotional level that most genres do not. If you listen to metal and hear 'noise', you may never get it and never feel that particular kind of buzz that only metal can give.

There is a comradery and unifying attitude amonst metal bands and fans. It's almost like a brotherhood through music.

Trance brings people together too, just in a different way. The subject matter mainly deals with dancing and partying. Metal's subject matter is a bit more varied, has more storytelling and a wider range of emotional and rythmical traits.

Metal is also such a hugely varied genre with so many sub genres and such a vast array of styles and approaches that there's something in it for almost everyone.

I say all this as a fan of all music, metal will always be my favorite.

You can take your loathing and shove it, sir. Metal (again, specifically death/black) takes an enormous amount of musical prowess.

Cannibal Corpse, on the other hand, I see as an exception to the metal talent rule. Sorry Akai, but I can't give them credit past their first album. They were, however, influential to the death metal scene.
