Why is Metal the dominant music genre on internet gaming forums?

Well, as stated by Slipknot's lead singer Corey Taylor, these days any boob can just walk into a studio and screw around with the computers to make music. You can't do that with metal, it's too complex. Even funeral doom.

People are making all sorts of computer programs now where you can make all kinds of music...pop is the most common, because metal, while awesome, is freaking hard.

Cannibal Corpse, on the other hand, I see as an exception to the metal talent rule. Sorry Akai, but I can't give them credit past their first album. They were, however, influential to the death metal scene.
What don't you like about them?

As a metal fan, specifically a death/black metal fan, I find that I have to defend the talent and overall awesomeness of my genre more than, say, a classic rock fan has to. Too many people hear death/black metal and think it is purely mindless racket, whilst missing the technical talent death metal bands have.
You say that as if you're the only one in the world.
Dj hero thread yesterday, the OP pretty much stated that DJ's are talentless twats. Fair cop he doesn't like the music but to go that far is a hideous crime of arrogance.
Then again, that ugly beast is everywhere.

There are alot of awful bands out there that are literally mindless racket, well near enough anyway.
Technicalities of pieces aside, sometimes I find metal to be too much technique and not enough soul.
Some bands are all about the grind, they chug that guitar, pull out the licks but they play it at such speed that it's utterly lost in the wash of sound.
Corporal Jigsore Quandry is a fantastic song by Carcass, yet the cover by The Bezerker is a sped up, acid trip that honestly pales in comparision.
Simply because of the speed & brutality.

If that's your cup of tea fine, but sometimes bands need to step away from that.

One does wonder where all these guys went:
I can safely say I have met...a few of them. They are all friends or business partners of my dad and they all work in construction.

Metal (again, specifically death/black) takes an enormous amount of musical prowess.
*twitch*

because metal, while awesome, is freaking hard.
As with all music scenes, there are quite a few people who, when they get heavily involved, start their own little group with some other fans. So I really don't think it's any harder than any other genre.

Like so many things, instruments and music are (relatively) easy to start off with, but very difficult to master.

It's no more difficult than any other genre, my 14 year old stepbrother is in a band, he edits the live stuff with digital stuff.
Some of it comes from his POD, others are samples in fact the drums are mostly samples because his drummer isn't that good.

It's not that it's harder to do by a long shot, it's more the fact that people who make metal music want to be able to play the instrument.
Who knows, maybe one day Metal will have a digital revolution of it's own.

I've never really noticed a consistent preference toward any one genre on internet forums, but to be fair I haven't been trying that hard to notice such things. Maybe it's just that the entire internet is stoked for the release of Brutal Legend?

I see Cannibal Corpse as simple shock value...and they don't really help me when it comes to the whole "death metal is still music" argument.

Cannibal Corpse simply seems a tad juvenile to me.

Actually, he's right. It does.

Now if you don't like the genre that is absolutely your business, but it is an uneducated opinion to assume or believe that it does not require immense skill and talent to perform.

He's in a band, but is it a metal band? Regular rock and metal are two different things, the latter being much more technical and much more difficult to screw around with either using computers or whatever.

I get where you're coming from. This is why I don't enjoy ALL bands (ie Cannibal Corpse).

I also try not to stomp on other's genres...especially since I know how much it sucks having to defend your own.

Really? Because there's a shit ton of amateur metal acts out there. They seem to be doing well and having a great time. Because of this, I am skeptical of your claims.

What makes it so much more difficult than every genre. Do you have an actual reason aside from "They play fast"? And don't say complexity, or I'll smack you. If you say complexity, it's like holding up a big sign that says "I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC".

I would see the difference between Necrophagist and Cannibal Corpse as a simple mastery and refinement of a genre over time.

This is why I don't really listen to Master of Puppets anymore since I heard Opeth.

His band ain't no Nickleback if that's what you're asking. It's a full blown metal band.
Except metal isn't, digital samples are exactly that. Digital samples, prerecorded sounds you can put into any order you like and make a song, edit it, do whatever you want too it.
You'll have to play some of it in, but after that you can just dick around with it.
You don't even have to use a guitar, if you're semi decent you can tinkle a tune on a keyboard, change the sound and tone to suit.

Personally, its the only kind of music that can still make good music. I can listen to way back with Metallica's Ride the Lightning, or I can listen to Mastodon's Crack the Skye.

Rap? Can't make good music anymore. Rock? Pretty terrible now. Country? Need I say more?
