It's great because it can be neatly described in this little hilarious clip, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7PGKcikaGY. Well, it's funny if you watch the entire episode.

Tell me WHY, and i want a good reason, WHY I WOULD WATCH THE SHOW AT ALL.

AT ALL.

You say my argument is invalid because i havent watched the show- my argument is that noone other than the little girls the show is made for SHOULD HAVE WATCHED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Mabie you have to be High or really, really drunk to understand it.
i dont know how it exploded into such a cult thing, but i can tell you why i started watching. i kept seeing mlp avatars and seeing people talk about it on forums and shit and i was curious why it was so popular. however, rather than ignorantly insulting a show i had never seen, and its fanbase, i decided to read about it and watch the first 4 episodes (because everyone kept saying that by episode 4 it started getting good). i thought the first 2 episodes were lame but still got one or two smirks out of me. by the end of episodes 3, however, i was starting to get into it.

you arent going to understand why people like something without experiencing it yourself. either your just trolling fans or your legitimately curious. if youre actually curious about its popularity then watch the first 4 episodes with an open mind and then maybe you'll understand its following or maybe you wont, but at least you can say you gave it a fair shot. and remember, kids show doesnt not have to mean bad. toy story 3 was a kids movie but every twenty something i know has seen it and loved it. the mario games are kids games but they're about as popular amongst adult gamers as they are amongst children, if not more so
Okay, so, since people like it, and i know i dont, im ignorant.

From that train of thought:

Emos like Cutting themselfs.

I dont.

Therefore, im Ignorant...

Uhm. Wat.

And, i never said anything about This show being bad becuase its a kids show- i mean, little 6 year old girls, go ahead!- I say its bad for whats IN the kids show.

And i also feel that Toy Story 3 is a bad example. Toy story 1 came out in 1995. Toy story 3 came out in 2010. Thats twenty years difference. Those 20 year old you mentioned probably saw the first two movies as a kid, and therefore, understand the idea behind the movies.

however, if that is applied to the Pony thing:

Pony became popular Late Last Year/this year. thats 6 months difference. People who havent watched the show will see Rainbow Coloured Baby Horses and unicorns singing about friendship. They dont understand the idea behind the show.

They arent readily comparable. One Show has been around for decades, one has been around for months. One has already integrated themselvs into a persons life since childhood. One hasnt. ONE IS ABOUT SHINY RAINBOW PONYS.
One isnt.

There are those who don't like the show because they've watched more than just the first 2 episodes, and still don't like it. If you've watched any of episode 3 onwards, and still don't like it, then I've got no beef with you. :)

But those who are just spouting uninformed opinions on the show because they think it'll be like the previous generations of MLP, then complain because we're trying to at least get them to give it a shot, or to stop commenting on it? I mean... Really?
Tell me WHY, and i want a good reason, WHY I WOULD WATCH THE SHOW AT ALL.

AT ALL.

You say my argument is invalid because i havent watched the show- my argument is that noone other than the little girls the show is made for SHOULD HAVE WATCHED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Did... Did you not read from the image I posted at all before responding?
Lauren Faust, one of the main driving forces behind the latest generation in its entirety, stated that "I didn't create this show for little girls, I created it for little girls and their parents -- including male parents. It only stands to reason that adult animation fans without children may like it, too."

So your statement that "noone other than the little girls the show is made for SHOULD HAVE WATCHED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE" is wrong, because the show is not just made for little girls.

I'm not saying you should watch the show at all. I'm saying that if you're going to comment on the show, at least watch any episode past (and including) episode 3 the whole way through.

I say that, because while episode 1 and 2 are pretty good once you're already a fan, they're not the best episodes to introduce someone to the series with, because they have a rather different feel to them, and thus aren't really good to introduce people to the series with because they don't really present the series in the right way.

It's the same as the fact that you wouldn't really take a comment about a show you like, from another person who has never seen any episode from the show, seriously.
E.g. Think about a show/movie/whatever you really like, and a lot of other people do, too. Right? Okay. Now imagine that every time you bring it up, I started going up to you, and anyone around you, and stated that the show is terrible. Truly, honestly terrible. You then ask if I've seen that show at all. I say no, but keep spouting what I'm saying as if it were in any way an objective fact. I'm not saying this would colour your opinion of me, but surely that would bug you a little if I did this every time you brought up a good show that you liked?
You misundestand me. I never said the show was Terrible. I IMPLIED it. I cant state the show is horrible- as you say, i havent seen it- and at NO POINT have i said i have.

WHAT I AM SAYING is that from face value, which, to anything in this world, is most important, this show is NOT sutable for any self respecting person above the age of 8.

Ill say that again;

This show is NOT sutable for any self respecting person above the age of 8.

Understand?

I didnt say ive watched it (God Forbid)
I havent said its horrible (I implied it)

And in addition, you state
"So your statement that "noone other than the little girls the show is made for SHOULD HAVE WATCHED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE" is wrong, because the show is not just made for little girls."

So, i either need to be a Little girl, or a married man watching the show WITH a little girl?

How many people on here fill those two roles? I think the idea behing Whats-Her-Face's message is that
1) your a little girl
2) your a parent of said little girl watching the TV show together.

NOT

a 20 year old dude sitting at his computer watching it alone. Coz thats what i think most of you are doing.

One of my friends has a pony Facebook avatar, and frequently comments on the series. My knee-jerk reaction, to my shame, was "Wow, I didn't realize he was gay."

I saw it a few other places, got curious, looked it up on TV Tropes [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic], saw the expected Periphery Demographic note, and decided to give it a shot. Enjoyed it enough to finish the whole first season and watch a whole [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJbAT1wzS8U] big [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT_y_f-MY7c] bunch [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTlGYS6rAfA] of [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbIGnY_DSIE] interesting [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GFpFNBqj2M] fanvids [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2X7eMiPtVE], and I expect to enjoy the second season as well.

Now, I've eclectic tastes in music and shows, so my liking it has little bearing on whether others would. I've never felt the need to tie my interests down to my age (what, being 32 means I can't enjoy old episodes of Darkwing Duck?), so I didn't suffer any embarrassment over enjoying it.

Regarding the musical numbers:

Pinkie Pie's opening number (about conquering fear through laughter) sets up her character and connects her to the plot... yeah, it could've been done in dialog, but the song doubles as a service to parents whose young kids need reassurance in a memorable and fun way.

Her Zecora song is short (9 lines), an amusing exaggeration of the town's rumors about the stranger. It seems like the sort of thing Pinkie Pie would come up with, and it sets up a hilarious moment later when the song gets unexpectedly reprised by another character.

Most other songs are either Pinkie Pie's, or group montage songs. It's just the way the show has chosen to handle montages, and yeah, you could probably skip most of them if you liked. As Easton Dark and Aidinthel said, Winter Wrap-Up is pretty fun; here's a piano version [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q6HckbVRd8] if you'd care to listen to the music before trying the pony-sung version (hmm, this version reminds me of the soundtrack to Lemmings).

Why are you so desperate to gain the high ground in this topic?

If you refuse to watch a genuinely good show simply because you're insecure in your masculinity than that's your problem.
Wait, what?

IM insecure with my masculinity? Uhm...

Im not watching a show about ponies.

The amount of ignorance and immaturity in this is astounding, your like all those people who blasted mass effect as some sort of porn simulator without even playing the game, go watch the show, if you still don't like it then say why in a constructive manner, instead of jumping on the hatred bandwagon riding purely on judging it by first glance

Edit: and the way you respond to those who challenge your bias only further backs up what I have to say

Uh...you win at physics?

Joking aside, kudos for actually giving it a go. It's very frustrating that people won't live and let live on both sides of the debate. The most vocal minorities seem to spam 'You will be assimilated into the herd' pictures or unnecessarily hateful comments like I've seen in this and many other threads.

For as much as Escapists tend to blindly insult 4chan they sure do wallow in the same shit they do.

This MLP crap reminds me of Portal. Some popular and wide spread that I can't stand it. Now I actually played Portal and know it's a good game. As a result I didn't hate Portal, just it's obnoxious fan base. Same can't be said for MLP. Hate the fans and hate the show by association. Which isn't really fair since I'm sure the show isn't bad, certainly not when compared to most modern children's shows. But that's the thing; it's a show primarily made for little girls. I can't justify sitting down and forcing myself to watch it on youtube when I could be, say, designing and elaborate trap to torture goblins in Dwarf Fortress. Rainbows sparkles and sunshine and friendship do not appeal to me at this point.

EDIT: It doesn't help that a lot of the fans have this weird cult-like mentality when the second they see someone who doesn't know much about this they immediately try to indoctrinate them.

Heh, I'm sure you don't have any valid reasons for hating furries either.
I do, actually. 3 of my class mates (who are furries) keep bugging me and my group of friends. They come up to us and go like "This is you like a furry! Don't you look cool? And this is John as a furry!". I keep telling them to go away, but they keep coming back, the buggers.

For people who watch ponies with magic powers for fun you sure are nasty little bitches..

I'll admit I only read þe first page, but I've gotta get out and help my friend move soon, so I'm going to have to skip þe next five pages and note þat so far no one has actually answered OP's question (alþough some of þeir links may have, as it is a pretty fun show).

Þe reason is þat, while þe 80s cartoon was a plotless advertisement for Hasbro toys wiþ stupid characters who often had no personality, it evolved into a tolerable cartoon wiþ distinct characters in þe 90s, and þe most recent version was conceived as a cartoon before it was a toy line, and by no less a creator þan Laura Faust (also known for Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and wife of Craig McCracken), who brings her own distinct styles of animation and humor to þe mix.

When I first saw one of my friends watching it, I burst out laughing. They told me it was genuinely a good show, and to give it a try. I thought, might as well, see if I like it, and if I do, then sure, I like it. Turns out I do like it, and I'm fine with that, I'm comfortable in my masculinity.

You aren't even giving it one try, not even to confirm your suspicions about it being bad. If you are, as you suggest, secure in your masculinity, then you will at least watch one episode (Dragonshy, btw) to prove that it's as bad as you think. If you aren't willing to 'risk it', even when you're so completely sure that it's bad, then yes, you are insecure in your masculinity.

I recently went to a bronies cocktail night, where about 10 of us (most of whom I'd not met in person before, they were friends of friends) who got together and watched every episode of the series, as well as a bunch of other clips, and generally hung out, drunk pony cocktails, and had a blast. Making friends with absolutely no effort was a lot of fun too. Your argument is invalid.

But you'll probably dismiss my post. After all, I'm one of -them-, aren't I? So everything I say is false.

It's a show for little girls that people try to justify for some odd reason. Tell me what is mature about ponies with tatoos of rainbows on thier buts prancing around singing about friendship. I mean, holy shit, other kids shows make fun of it for gods fucking sake.
Why does it's primary target audience matter? What difference does the species of the main character make? What other shows have made fun of it? And by "it" I mean the new series.

Finally, have you ever actually watched the show?
