Pass. Metal seems like it desperately wishes it could be progressive rock, but lacks the skill or creativity needed to fit in that genre. I even took the time to skim through some of the videos posted and it all sounds the same. I'd go as far as to compare the music sheets. Not much variation if any at all.

That said, I don't turn my nose at people for liking it. What is with this whole desperation to defend metal music on these forums? *takes a look at the general age of forumers* nvm I shouldn't have said anything.
I'm just curios sir, is it cold up there on your pedestal?

I have to say it. Metal really sucks. There's so much screaming you can't hear the words, and the guitar is always so distorted you can't hear a distinct melody. In the end, it's just noise.

On occasion, there will be some decent nu-metal, say, KoRn for instance, simply because it doesn't sound like a vomiting robot in your ear.
Congradtz, you have an opinion. Wow you've probably heard one death/black metal song(but you'll still say how one of your friends listens to metal or you've been to a few gigs.)
No you are wrong, metal isn't just screaming and it's assholes like you who make sweeping generalisations of something that I care deeply about, that I fucking hate. Metal is a lot more diverse than most music out these days. You have no right to criticise something when you have no understanding of. Good day to you sir.

The vocals are like a security system, set in place to keep out those who cant take it. Its the instrumentals that are the real focus and in many cases, what is being done musically is pretty funtamentally different that what most people think of as "musical. What makes death metal unique is how complex the compositions actually are and how fast theyre being executed. If the singer was "singing" our ears would listen to THOSE notes instead of the guitars. One must learn to listen to whats behing the voices.

Just for fun:

I like Metal, particularly Grunge-metal, but I really cannot stand "Death-Metal", or really any music where the singers don't sing. it's also one of the reasons I don't like rap.

I would've liked the song OP posted far better if they had just left it as an instrumental.

Problem: Slayer is Thrash metal, not death metal, death metal vocals are growls, etc. Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under, Cattle Decapitation.
If you actually read the OP you'd see that at no point did I call Slayer death metal.

So you're not just a musical snob, you're an age snob as well? Sucks to be you with that kind of closed mindedness.

Also, did you know most modern prog borrows hugely from metal? Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree come to mind.

And metal is not about some elitist musical wankery and having varied music sheets. It is abut a simple and pure feeling, something you seem unfamiliar with.

By the way I made the OP and I'm 30.

I can listen to the really extreme stuff from time to time if I want to release steam. Im in no way violent ofcourse. The music does most of the release, all you gotta do is headbang or lie back and enjoy it. Or if yer at a metal festival or concert, mosh till you cant take it anymore. When I first found metal I found my first real outlet for negative emotions and became a happier person for it.

METALTOWN GOTHENBURG 2011 !

Hypocrisy quickly became one of my favorite bands with their anti-theistic lyrics and melodic death metal.

I also have a thing for Insomniums melancholic style and lyrics. It helped me cope with things in my life that were tough for me.

See this thread, this makes me happy for the forums. I'm glad there are still literate people who know how to explain why metal is a good thing.

I've been listening to metal since I was a little kid, my dad raised me on stuff like Judas Priest and Metallica, but lately I've gotten into many more sub-genres. Lately I've been listening to death, black, progressive, power, and of course good old thrash.

Last year I went to Heavy MTL, a festival containing Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Alice Cooper, Fear Factory, Mastadon, Lamb of God, Rob Halford and about 20 smaller bands. That was one of the best experiences of my life. Even being in a mosh pit at a death metal concert in a province where half of everyone speaks a different language... everyone was still friendly.

So yeah, I like metal quite a bit. Thanks for making this thread.

My opinion can be summed up as "It must have singing or no vocals at all".

I cannot stand to listen to a vocalist screaming to the point that you can't even make out the lyrics. That being said, it can be good in moderation and there are some songs that absolutely call for it. In those cases, where it actually works well with the music, the lyrics and the feel of the song, I will absolutely enjoy listening to it.

But it NEEDS proper pacing, it needs to build up until it reaches breaking point and THEN scream. Having every single song sound like that from start to finish isn't a STYLE of music, it's bad song writing.

What I do hate is the metal fans who think that metal is the be all and end all of music and anyone who likes anything else should be mocked relentlessly (even people who like slightly different variations of metal... it's a bit like organised religion when you think about it!). You know, the ones that believe that they are somehow superior to people because they prefer certain air vibrations in their ears over others. I know a LOT of them, I'm sure you do aswell. That's not just metal fans, I have to say, but they are among the most vocal and the most irritating.

I will listen to basically anything and I think that you are missing out if you don't do the same. (Disclaimer: that was a general "you" not you specifically, OP.)

It makes me want to scream "ARGH TURN IT OFF!".

I just don't see the appeal, at all.

Ahh, that's better.

My questions to you is:

Do you 'get' extreme metal?

Are you a fan? Are you indifferent? or does it make want to scream 'ARGH TURN IT OFF!'?

If you are a fan, tell us why and how it makes you feel to throw on some good old blast beats and death growls

To finish, I shall leave you with some sexy melodic death metal to make your eardrums happy :)

A) what do you mean extreme metal
B) Yes I am a fan I listen to a variety of metal going from folk to epic to viking to death metal to molodic death metal to symphonic to thrash to hair
C) It helps me release some pent up aggression and plus I just find everything about it awesome
PLUS I feel I should say that I can listen to anything but really metal is a main one for me

Thank you for an utterly useless, generic and pointless post good sir. If you actually looked at all the videos posted or even in fact read the OP, you'd have found metal bands with singing as well as videos with harsh vocals. If you aren't going to offer anything useful to a thread about music you already don't like, don't bother posting.

Why not defend something you have a passion for? And why do you have to be a certain age to defend something?

Not at all

My ears, they bleed. Do not want.
But hey, all power to those who enjoy it. Just don't live near me, or if you do, don't play metal late into the night. I will complain. To the cops.

No? xD

And no problem! Can't stop listening to it.

Creature Fear is another favourite (mainly because they play it in Chuck):

That was probably one of the most beautiful arrays of words ever spoken, I wish more people thought that way.

Also, props to the Escapist community for not being full of those elitist metal-types who bash everyone's taste saying "that's not metal". Me, I like to think I have a pretty good mix 'o metal in me: everything from Metallica to Killswitch Engage to In Flames to Eluvitie to System Of A Down to Deathklok and everything in between. And I'm still looking for new genres.

Sometimes, but not always. You can have dynamics within growling or screaming vocals too. Lamb Of God would be a good example for these kind of lyrics EDIT: Vocals... not lyrics.Oops.

They are more subtle differences than singing dynamics, but they are there. It's more about tone and pronunciation than pitch (though there is an element of pitch to it also)
