People hate the police, because they think that it is a force for good, and that they are doing a bad job.
But in the end, they are a force for order. For better or worse...

That said, many police officers are just skinheads who managed to lie their way through psyche screening...

I have a friend who's part of the Met, but I'm still weary of them. There has been some real shady shit in the past associated with them, even if it doesn't represent them as a whole...
Actually, I feel better about the MET than I do about the police force back where my family lives. Sure, there are some shitty MET officers who just stop and search every Muslim they see, but its clear the organization as a whole has had some pretty massive introspection, and the antithesis to that for me was watching the police response at Pride, which was phenomenal. I know they'd probably been told to be on their best behaviour because of the slightly toxic legacy of policing at pride, but they were friendly, helpful and relaxed, and it made a big impression on me.

Police culture back home is fucked up. They pretty much see the world entirely in black and white, often literally when it comes to skin colour. Most are extremely right wing, sexist, homophobic, chauvanistic and basically treat the people they drag in like shit regardless of why and how. Case in point, a close member of my family is a custody visitor. You literally cannot walk into a police station back home without witnessing some kind of abuse of power or breach of policy against the people detained.

So no, I don't hate the police. But in many cases police culture is in dire need of reform.

i never got american rap cultures dislike of police. police dont exist to defend or protect the government, they exist to keep the peace and enforce the law. dont disturb the peace, and dont break the law and you have nothing to fear. if you dont like the law, take it up with legislators, not the police.

yes there are egotistical, power hungry police, but there are egotistical, powerhungry everything, so there is no point in getting hung up over it.

Nope, don't hate them at all.
I got wrongfully accused by one not so long ago. But they are just doing their job.
The incident got settled rather quickly and they couldn't have been more friendly.

Why are you fixated on what people think of the cops? Do you have a thing for authority figures?

Those are really poor reasons to hate police officers. Police officers are just trying to feed their families and maybe make wherever they live a little bit of a safer place. If you want to hate someone, hate the politicians who pass unjust laws, and only serve the mega-corporations. Don't hate the people who are just trying to make their way in this world.

In my eyes, the only reason you would have to dislike the police is if you're doing something to get on their bad side anyway (in the US at least).

Then again, the majority of my family is made up of police or military personnel, so I guess that makes me "one of them."

I hate the police because they support laws that are immoral.
Which laws?

The problem lies with viewing "the police" as this big singular unstoppable entity. The police are made up of many different people. My best friends dad was a police officer who everybody knew as "Mike on a bike". He would pop into the downtown pubs and have a friendly chat with 19-20 year olds, and he would joke around with high school kids when he saw them during the day.
He was generally an awesome dude who had a great rapport with the community, but he severely injured his hand while chasing down an asshole who shot somebody, so he is no longer out on the streets.

For me, maybe knowing somebody like that affects my view of the police. Absolutely there are jerks, and I totally disagree with the fact that they have things like a quota for speeding tickets, but in all police are just people capable of being as nice or as dickish as the next guy.

He's also told us some straight up horror stories.
-A car accident where he had to pick up brain matter spread across the highway.
-An inconsolable mother who sat there, a screaming emotional wreck as he had to cut her 17 year old son down from a noose.
-Being at the scene of a 13 year old who was playing by train tracks who had magnetic couplers of 2 cars clamp down on him. It was the only thing holding his insides together, so they brought the family to the scene to say goodbye to the kid who died nearly instantly when they released the couplers.

Do you have to deal with shit like that at your 9-5? I didn't think so!
That last thing you want to hear after that is some delinquent calling you "pig" for no good reason.

You know what I hate about the police? When they keep their hand on their gun while you're talking to them. Even under friendly circumstances, they always look like they're a second away from quick-drawing that son of a ***** and shooting you, what the hell is up with that? I feel thats terribly innapropriate. That and in my experience, all the cops I've spoken to are arrogant jackasses on a powertrip.

I have no doubt that there are some really friendly, helpful, reasonable cops out there, I've just never met one.

Also, I can't count how many times I've seen a police car roll up to a red light, and then immeditately turn on his sirens, blow through it, and then turn his sirens off again. Just so he doesn't have to wait the 10 seconds for it to turn green. Thats pretty unprofessional if you ask me.

I hate the police as a whole because most the time they seem to be only interested in busting as many people as they can and throwing their weight around. Most of the cops I've actually met though have been pretty decent people.

You hate the police because you don't like thinking. You hate the police because you don't like opening your eyes and actually looking.
You have no idea just how much the police do for you, what they face every day.
This is assuming you're in America, of course.

Maybe you ought to try going to a real police state some time, instead of living in a country where the police serve the people. Where they follow the law established by the Government that you elected.

I for one fully support the police here in the UK. (I was going to try and join before those idiot bankers and Labour ruined everything.) They are under constant scrutiny from the public and the media so that when they do slip up, or someone makes a bad judgement call its front page news and usually in the worst possible light.

Yes. They fuck up, the death at the G20 riots could have been avoided, but imagine being there yourself - you'd be full of adrenaline and wound up so tight only dogs would hear you fart because you are vastly outnumbered and if someone decides to start something and people get violent you are the ones taking the brunt of the shit storm.

The police here are on such a tight, politically correct leash that they are nearly powerless thanks to the government with things like arrest quotas and mountains of frivolous paperwork getting in the way of proper police work. (Like putting the boots to pack of teenage yobs terrorizing and assaulting defenceless families. And I don't mean the group-of-mates kind that just get a bit rowdy in the park after sneaking some bottles of cheap cider from the off-license, I mean the ones that prank call the fire service or set fire to cars just so they can throw bricks at the fire crews and vehicles.)

The problem isn't with the police. Granted there are a few bad apples but the same can be said for any other walk of life.

The problem is with greedy, idiot, out of touch MPs passing laws to protect the lawbreakers - "I was only breaking into this family's home when some guy came out of a bedroom and beat me sensless! I don't know why he did it."

And as this rant winds down for the end, if you abide by the law you have nothing to fear from the police. Yes, some laws are stupid - we know that, the police know that but the police are still duty-bound to uphold them so give them a break.

And for the folks who have done something they shouldn't have and are now butthurt about their subsequent run-in with the po-po, I have this piece of advice:

British Government=my worst enemy
Police=tools of the government.
It's nothing personal, but most police are woefully ignorant that the law and justice itself haven't been on speaking terms for a lomg time now.

I really don't care about the police. They're there to protect us and for that I respect them.

However, the majority of the police officer's I've come across just seem to be arrogant power hungry douchebags who would fine you for whatever...

So is getting a job and putting your money into a large bank. Why all the hate for the police?

Hell, I know a guy who owes his life to the police. You can't seriously say you despise the police for helping fuel a corrupt government. Just being a citizen does that.

i was on my paper round and passed a cop car. police woman in it gave me an ice-cold stare that made me think she was about to arrest me.
but sometimes situations that are stupid are funny when you add cops in. my friend climbed into a power substation and had a discussion with a police officer, and i said 'sorry, hes a bit of a fucking idiot.'
