American here.

I rather like the police. Yes, there are some who abuse their power, but the same could be said of nearly any occupation. Even a naughty fry cook may spit in your food. The police help hold this country together and I respect them immensely for that.

Simple answer to this is people like to blame other people for things common scapegoats are - Goverment, Corporations, Banks, Police and Teenagers however they forget that without any of these they would have a heck load more to moan about and their lifes would be poorer for the loss.

In all things there are people in an organisation or group who are not the most noble and can act in cruel ways this includes the police and unfortunatly the majority of bad is always protrayed and seen above the massive mass of good the rest of the group can and probably does do which skews the opinion of people towards them not to mention this is not an exclusive trait to just police but some people may see it as such. This and of course everyones favourite 'The Media' who love to pick on people like Police in stories.

In short haters are going to hate and people always love to use police as a scapegoat to direct their hate and potray their problems, just deal with it and remember without you no matter how low they view you they would have significantly less and a worse life.
I love watching those media stories and yelling at the reporters, that the police were right.

It's hard to hate the police when I am in college studying to be a police officer.

I don't hate the police but I have lost some faith in them.
You shouldn't have *faith* in any human beings. Our governments aren't designed around trust. Those that were, became overrun with despots. We should always respect and then challenge authority.
It's nothing to do with trust it's how they act and fail to control a situation.

My dad was at the UEFA cup final in Manchester a few years ago where some rangers fans broke out into a riot. Before the match had even started my dad asked where a toilet was the police officer told him to 'fuck off' a few times when all he asked was where the toilet was.

That's just one example.

I think ace of something [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/ace_of_something] is a pretty cool guy. I don't see how you could hate him based on his occupation.

OT: I don't fear the police and I'm glad they're around. They answer a lot of calls for service to HELP YOU. They perform many acts of order maintenance to ensure everything flows smoothly. Then on occasion they engage in crime control activities. I don't see where everyone got this whole "Crime Fighter" view of the police from.

Have any of you ever heard of Serpico? I would think that would give you at least one cop to not hate.

personally I think its a little stupid to hate police...I mean seriosuly
And this. Next thing we know they'll be grouping people together based on their race, religion or skin color and hating them based solely on their appearance or creed.

Here in the states we have a nice mixture of police officers. Some are just downright douchey assholes. While some are, nice reasonable, and have a sense of humor.

They're just people at the end of the day, like everybody else.

That's what I've observed about the police force in Upstate New York, U.S.A at least.

... They're public servants who go on power trips isntead of doing their jobs. Anyone who does that deserves scorn. Of course I like pro soccer/football players better. they bring in money to a city instead of drain it, they bring in tourism instead of bash on the tourists, and police support any ol' law that's on the books, not regardless of what race you are or the morality behind the law itself.

A lot of cops suck and those stinky apples ruin the bunch for everyone.

Yo dude, fuck da police they always messin wit me and ma homies when we try to blaze it up!!! piggies gonna get out o ma life!

And scene. I have great amounts of respect for the RCMP in my area. I have yet to meet a rude or obnoxious officer. That said, the RCMP has their share of mistakes. The Robert Dziekanski incident was horrible, without question. But the Liberal controlled Media paints Officers of the Law as soulless at every chance they get. For every corrupt Police Officer there are 1000 Men and Women doing their job the way it should be done.

After my Military Service is completed I will apply for the RCMP. Does that make this whole post biased? Yes, yes it does.

I don't haste the police... I just SERIOUSLY distrust them. But then again I don't trust anyone that wields any type power or social authority. Are there honest cops that actually serve the community? Sure, but from my experience there are an equal number on the opposite end of the spectrum. In my opinion the best cop is one that I never see, hear, or interact with. Ever.

It is the same here in Western New York, as long as you do not go out o your way to get in trouble, the most arrest are usually during Bills games.

When a police officer has killed or arrested a member of your family without any reason whatsoever, you tend to generate hatred towards the entire police forces.

Just saying. Most people just hate the police because gangsta rappers tell them to.

I live in Australia, and as such do not understand the animosity people have towards the law and the police, even in my own country. The truth of the matter is that you're only ever going to interact with the police when something goes wrong, when you're in trouble, or you've done something wrong. Hence, people associate them with bad experiences.

I would suggest remembering what the world was like before the Rule of Law and the institution of non-subjective law enforcement and dictation. Things were a hell of a lot worse, and I for one have no issue with the police force.

In fact, I intend to join them. Building the house is harder than throwing rocks at it, but I;d rather try to change things for the better than ***** and moan because they're doing their job.

DISCLAIMER:
I do not intend to state that all police forces and all police officers are completely moral and ideologically sound. Corruption has reared its head in every country, especially in relation to the law, and I am well aware of this. My statement is aimed at the clear majority of police officers that do their job diligently and morally, dealing with the darker side of society so that the many may not have to.

That depends...we have two kinds of cops here, the state and metro.
I got nothing against the state guys, they do their job and don't get in the way(and these are the guys in charge of looking out for traffic violations, so you know I mean it:p)
The metro assholes, yeah, these people are on a serious power trip, most of them couldn't get a job guarding sand in a desert. Seriously, they don't even require you to finish HIGH SCHOOL to get in. And then people wonder why most of them can't spell their own name...

I am studying to become a policeman, and let me put this one question to you:

Someone breaks into your house, beats the crap out of you and your family and then runs away. are you going to try and track him down using videos you saw on youtube or with moves you saw in a rambo film, or are you going to call the professionals?<color=white>here's where 200 people tell me the police couldnt find X person. its a damn shame they dont publish "mary was found safe and well" every day in the paper as much as they publish missing people stories.
People need to grow up and quite frankly get real. Everyone knows the typical "Power-mad Policeman" stereotype but quite frankly in the UK the police are so closely scrutinised nowadays that they have to justify their actions, and a majority of the time can do legally.

Put yourself in their shoes. One day you're dealing with an old lady who has had her bag snatched by some low life and the next you're trying to contain a bunch of rowdy students that are angry that they will have to limit their drinking, whilst trying to minimise the amount of vandalism they are causing (but do not get blamed for, because oh no, the police shouldve stopped the rioting[/I].

When they keep their hand on their gun while you're talking to them. Even under friendly circumstances, they always look like they're a second away from quick-drawing that son of a ***** and shooting you, what the hell is up with that? I feel that's terribly inappropriate. That and in my experience, all the cops I've spoken to are arrogant jackasses on a power trip.
I can tell you right now it is for several reasons. One, so somebody doesn't come up from behind them and attempt to take it from them. The other is, people can snap in an instant, they have to be ready/prepared. Sure most people probably aren't going to snap in an instant, but it only takes one person for you to lose your life. Another reason might be just for plain comfort sake, holding onto the gun is a somewhat comfortable place to hold onto, similar as to one who would hold their hip.

http://hypervocal.com/news/2011/false-incestuous-rape-accusations-the-absolutely-horrific-ordeal-of-julian-wendrow/

This was my story, I was the 13 year old in this case. (Happened in 2007.)

This is why I hate the police, prosecutors, and Department of Human Services.

And for the record, I generally hate most rap. The kids you refer to are probably douchebag wannabe gangsters.

Not strict enough here, absolutely none of the moral-choicemaking should be done by them, as they are the practical extension of the law.
