Yes I know how you feel mate. It's just this idiotic thought going around that if you have a Facebook or Bebo or whatever, it makes you somebody. Which is just ridiculous.

If you don't need Facebook and you don't want it, then don't get one.

I primarily use my Facebook to keep up with bands or companies or other such things.

And I occasionally socialize. It's useful because I can talk to people I otherwise couldn't talk to, like my cousin who is currently residing in a place unbeknownst to me.

I use Facebook as a student, because it's much easier to search someone's name than it is to ask for their number, and be sure to call them, and blah blah.

Also: I used facebook to get my girlfriend. We were friends, and I added her on facebook, and we got really close just talking, and she gave me her number, and all that good st00f.

Basically, it IS a great way to keep in touch with old friends and whatnot - if you want to keep in touch with them. My friend John left the city years ago and I never got his number. The Magic of Facebook made it so we could talk again.

It's not the greatest thing ever invented, but it really IS quite handy (and addicting; I felt the same way as this guy until I got a facebook for myself)

I have had a facebook account since it was college-only. It was a great way to organize things with friends on campus, keep up with campus events, send private messages without using any of the terrible messaging applications that existed and still do, and was all around nicer too look at that any other friend-keeping-in-touch-ifiying site (Up yours, MySpace). It hasn't lost the style but is swamped with utter garbage, but I stick with it because that's how I used to keep in touch with many people and it is how I will continue to keep in touch. The core functionality of the site remains intact, and so I will not fault it for opening itself to creative developers and then being filled with waste-of-time trash.

I use facebook all the time, and have it in English (Pirate). It's a fun way to waste time with friends when you're not getting together. I like sharing a photo from our latest party or whatever and reading people's comments, for instance. Also, it allows me to keep in touch with the people I've met accross the years accross the globe. I've got old friends from Switzerland, the US, Australia, Spain, Norway, Mexico, 3 different cities in Argentina, etc.

Plus, it's an excellent tool for keeping up with family far away. You look at their pictures, and their "status updates" (like Twitter, but with more characters)

Also, I'm friends with tons of groups and societies, so I'm always up to date with events and the like. That, and birthdays. Thank God Facebook keeps track of birthday without any input on my part.

I like how you can't be contacted by strangers unless it's by PM, or if you both comment on the same picture (which means you have at least one mutual friend, so it's probably safe)

My sister keeps bugging me to sign up for Facebook, but I don't trust Facebook and cannot think of a good reason to sign up for it.

I had one once. I created an account, stared at my monitor for a few seconds wondering what to do, and went on the Escapist instead. I deleted it the next day because my friend who told me to make it told everybody else that I was making one and they wouldn't leave me alone.

If it does not interest you; do not use it.

However, it does interest alot of people. So they use it.

Facebooks a great place to talk about...MY ASS! Seriously, i haven't had an actual conversation with anyone on facebook, maybe i'm just usin it wrong but it seems all anyone ever seems to do is post pictures of themselves, say "lol" and invite me to groups I have no Interest in joining.

then again, few people seem to share all of my interests, nobody seems to be into games other than halo & CoD. Not that they're BAD games, but I like to broaden my horizons! Nobodies taken up animation, and I haven't had an offline conversation about anime in over a year. oh, and nobody watches YTP.
I'm in high school, if that matters.

I had to get a facebook for a class I was taking as part of putting myself in the "child's mindset" while teaching. What a joke that was. I use myspace to keep tabs on the bands I enjoy and I was happy with just that.

i have some people from my old school added as contacts, and a slightly unstable aunt.

people who i have never met keep adding me. it's rather worrying.

i don't log into it any-more really.

I use Facebook as a tool rather than a place of fun. Sure it can be fun at times (but not in the way that say, a video game is fun) in the sense that you talk to people on it. I have old friends added on it but I rarely if ever communicate with them because they are just that, old friends. It is a tool in the same way that twitter or MSN messenger is a tool. It allows me to communicate with people I know. It is useful because it allows me (or my friends for that matter) to quickly spread information about an event, send out invites and such and then distribute photos/videos of said event afterwards. It's useful to talk to people with whom you may have no other contact or say, you've been introduced to someone through a mutual friend, it's a useful way to keep in touch with people.

Admittedly before I got facebook I used the argument that anyone who needs to contact me has my number/email address. You may or may not reach a point in your life where you are meeting new people very very often, people that it would either be useful/fun to keep in touch with for future events or whatever. Are you really going to give out your number or email address to everyone you meet? Not likely, it's much easier to just say "Oh, add me on facebook".

The distributing photographs thing. I recently went on a trip with my college playing some concerts in paris and I took my camera along. I took somewhere in the region of 2-300 photographs, most of them featuring people I'd met on the tour. As I'm sure you'll agree, not everybody has a camera and even if they did, they don't always have it with them. It's much easier to uploads 200 photos to facebook than it is for people to try and contact you to say "Oh, can I have the photo where-".

You may find it useful at some point in your life, depending on your age. I do, others don't.
