Chun Li was my first enthrallment by a game girl when I was a young boy. In the presex days, only speed, power, and grace were visible to me. Not complaining about the doujinshi, but that was later.

Cue the teen fantasy era. Chun Li may have the place in my heard but Mai Shiranui and her two large friends had a place somewhere else. Can't say I liked her as a person. Same for Morrigan, Felicia, Lilith, Fei Lin (Fighters History, 30 Old School Points if you heard of that one), Sonya Blade, and eventually Samus Aran when they finally...fleshed out her graphics.

I guess my current favorite is Ashe from FF12. She's strong, intelligent, and actually beautiful--not that "betcha wanna run my energy bar to zero so you can have your way with me" beautiful like the girls in the top paragraph. Then again, that's not why she's on my radar.

I was fighting Fenrir (I think), a horrible beast with 3 million HP. It wasn't going well. He was half dead, we were mostly dead. It was time to switch a dead party member out for a live one. Out comes Ashe, regal, mighty, and brandishing a giant blade with both hands. Her blade combo-struck the dragon's hide for massive damage. There was no battle cry, no inspiring speech programmed into the game but the others in the party seemed to respond. Everyone snapped into shape. People revived and healed. Under Ashe's leadership the day was won.

So, way to go, Ashe. (I'm still not complaining about all the doujinshi.)

Shirogane Naoto from Persona 4. Unfortunately, I too have to play the 'I'm a perv' defense and I like reverse traps. And blue hair. Oh, and glasses. So, basically everything about Naoto.

Aya Brea's a close second for awesomeness. It's rare for a female character in videogames to actually be interesting, likeable and self-reliant.

Tifa from FF7 (preferably FF7 remake, if it ever comes out)

Tifa was the first that came to my mind, but I also always loved Mileena, from Mortal Kombat 2. She was a badass, fun to play, and it was my first introduction as a kid to a female character who didn't need rescuing (ok, there was sonya from the original, but she was incredibly bland and boring, imo.)

This one is difficult because I like quite a few. So I'll just give the top 5 list in no particular order.
1. Alyx Vance - Half Life 2 - good companion for Gordon, has a giant pet robot and survived getting skewered by aliens.
2. Liara T'Soni - Mass Effect - I wish I could stay as positive as her with the universe going to hell around me.
3. Shale - Dragon Age: Origins - (Spoilers!) Technically a woman, her need to kill birds and general sarcastic nature win me over
4. Samus Aran - Metroid series - Only a dedicated bounty hunter would save the galaxy over and over for free.
5. Ivy Valentine - Soul Calibur series - chain sword wielding badass.(Though if her boobs get any bigger, poor woman won't be able to fight)
