TL;DR. 22 month old toddler is in the swimming pool unnattended for about 3 minutes and drowns, mother is charged of manslaughter but not convicted(not really important bit). And heres the crux of the whole thing

"I wish I could tell parents the one thing that would prevent this happening, but I can't. You can't watch children 24/7 and the law apparently expects you to.

"I have to make a lot more effort to let them do things now. But I have nine children, it is physically impossible for me to have nine children and make sure they are all safe all the time. I just have to trust them."

Really? Really....this seriously shows up so much in the media lately, and makes me have no support for anybody in a bad situation with more than 1 kid. If you're going to have more than one child, and you arent able to keep track of them all and keep them safe, why are you having them...really...

Even if she thinks that she can't keep track of her nine children and "just has to trust them", that should never excuse leaving a toddler (who I am assuming is one of her younger children) alone in a dangerous situation like swimming in a pool.

She sounds like she was being negligible. Why was the kids alone in a swimming pool? To a certain extent she's right, even parents with one or two children have had terrible accidents happen to their children when they only looked away for a second, which isn't negligence, it's bad luck. Personally I would never have that many children in North America, but my grandmother did have 12 children, in Guyana, South America, and all made it to adulthood, all finished highschool, most got some form of secondary education including 2 Ph.D's. But she had help. Lots and lots of help.

you have them because you love kids, and do want to take care of them. And when you have a lot of kids you do do your best to take care of them, and set up rules and parameters (usally things like keep the pool locked, or not allow kids to enter the pool without an accomplice) to keep them safe. Like a lot of rules, sometimes they fail because someone didnt do their part. Comming from a town with a lot of big families (mine included) these things are usually not the mother's fault. my guess is this happened because she asked one of the older kids to watch their sister, and that older sibling went and played xbox or legos or something. That older sibling, whose old enough to babysit, is not old enough to be tried so the fall comes on the parent.

I am an expecting father.

Obviously, and please remember this, the idea that through some preventable fault of my own, my child should be injured or die is, abhorrent.

However.

WTF guys, seriously? 3 minutes, I could see leaving my (future)kid in a situation with 8 other siblings (hopefully some more than a 2 years old) and expecting they could handle themselves. This aint news, it's tragic. But to imply that this woman is some sort of example of the failings of humanity seems, insensitive to the horror she has to live with.

Fuck, it's not like there is a dearth of people who are examples of humanity's failings!

It's negligent. Negligible means that something is isn't important, and is an adjective. For example "That fact is negligible." Negligent means that you aren't paying attention to something, and is almost always used with children. "She was a negligent mother and ignored her children.

Anyway. This woman is crazy for having that many kids, but still not up to the Duggers with 20 kids. If anybody makes me loose faith in humanity it's them.

You remind me of my friend. Okay, the woman was negligent, you're right. What's so bad about the Duggars? They seem nice enough. I completely disagree with them on almost everything, but they seem to have found a way to make their situation work. I'm iffy about having one child, but I know personally you can safely raise a massive amount of children while ensuring they make it into adulthood relatively happy and successful adults. I'm just not so sure you can do so in North America, or any part of the western world, though the Duggars may be proof otherwise.
