Plus there are the more obvious arguments, they are too young to understand it all, we dont want to expose kids to things that we deem are too adult for them (Death, Gore, Sex) and, finally, there is just plain old modesty + logic.

If an 8 year old is regularly seeing boob, something has gone wrong. In the west (And the east. Ok, in everywhere outside of some tribes. Oh, and nudist colonies. But in my eyes that falls in between "Tribe" and "Cult".) women habitually wear clothing. This is just how it is. And because kiddies have no interest (And we dont want them to have any interest) tits etc are not exactly common in kiddie films.

So... I think that covers everything?

*wanders off and gets back to his research*
As far as understanding goes, though, it's not like little kids understand "love," either, but you (non-specific) can still do your job as a parent to give a general idea of what love is, as well as sex, and explain that they are both for older people.

Seems pretty simple to me.

Besides, it's not like little kids all of the time don't get forcibly exposed to death, either.

Because puritinist relgions got puberty early as a child and hated being the lone awkward geek so told everyone to cover up or they'll go to hell.

In a nutshell anyway.

But on the flipside, having them supported especially if you're on the larger end of the scale is a huge relief, we wouldn't be able to properly function with breasts of say size D and above without a bra/supportive clothing... True I don't think there should be any massive cover up but... for general day to day? Yeah covering them does serve a practical purpose as well as the former.

I've always wondered how the milk is stored in breasts. Is it just in a little sack, or is it saturating all the breast tissue, so the tissue is very very milky and it gets drawn to the nipple when sucked. If you stuck a pin in a breast would it leak milk?
Saturation with many veins leading to the nipples, which get darker with elongated nipples while nursing (most, but not all color fades after nursing stops). Some of the milk veins can get to a diameter of around pinky size. Sticking a pin in the breast of a nursing person would A) get you arrested. B) cause it to bleed. C) maybe have a bit of milk in the blood. If you could get an IV in one of the milk veins, you might be able to get some that way, but in most cases, you'd need suction too. i.e. Babies need to suck to get large flows.

I got to enjoy breasts during my childhood. Not real ones, but my parents got this educational software called A.D.A.M the Inside Story. It included a mode to look at illustrated (but completely anatomically-correct) anatomy with and without cutaways, and I learned quite a bit about the Lymphatic and Reproductive systems. I also discovered a book in my school library in fourth grade that was about sex. This was a kids book too. One for older kids, but still a kids book. It had detailed illustrations of breasts and even the vulva.

What did all this exposure do to me? Well, saying it made me more interested in breasts is like saying video games make us more violent; the main reason I viewed that media in the first place was because I already had a strong inclination.

What does this mean for me now? Well, I could probably do a proper check for breast tumors. Also, I like breasts, but outside a sexual context, the most they are is interesting to look at. My fiancée lets me casually grope hers when we're in private simply because I get the urge to do so. Once the urge has passed, I stop. She's the best woman ever.

I enjoy boobs as much as the next man, but I can sort of see why we keep them covered as a matter of decency. Aside from anything else it's tremendously impractical for women to have such things completely unbound.

Religious ideas about everything you enjoy being sinful are probably the basis for the censorship of boobs. Melons are evidence of the sexuality inherent in the bearing of children, and should therefore being kept hidden, unless said fun-bags are painted on canvas by a Vatican-approved artist for some reason.

It's backwards and it's silly, but that's the way things work.

If boobs no longer had to be covered I think I'd get bored of looking at them eventually, and that would not do. I need to feel naughty on occasion.

Honestly I think it has more to do with our belief that children are completely innocent and that outside forces will corrupt them. That inevitable urge to say that sex is dirty and that society will drive us to do it all the while ignoring that our hormones and brain chemistry will push us into it anyway.
Personally, and i may be in a minority here, my favourite part of a woman is the naked back. I wouldn't want to date or fool around with a naked back but then I think the whole is far more than the sum of its parts... Particularly if it likes talking plant biology and will go hiking with me.

Depends on the size of the breasts and what the breasts' owner does in terms of activity.

Eh, just because they don't need to be covered doesn't mean they'll be out all the time. There are actual substantially large places (Oregon, most of Canada, etc) where it's completely legal for women to go topless wherever it's appropriate for men to do so. You wouldn't notice that from going around town for a walk, because most women still choose to cover up. I mean, think of when men take their shirts off: beaches, strenuous outdoor labor, swimming. Plenty of people still find men's chests erotic even though they're allowed to flaunt if they want to.

Either way, I like this thread. Makes a nice change from the usual threads; the Mass Effect Ending threads, the "Am I the only one...?" threads, the friend zoned threads and of course the news threads.

OT: I think it's a preparation thing. Puberty kicks in at about 13-ish, there and there abouts, differing between males and females, and more so between individuals but the idea is to deprive the child of secondary mammalian traits so that when the times comes to view them, they are treated with the admiration they deserve.

That, or we're just socially shy about it. I dunno, this is all guesswork

I imagine if treated tits as casually as you suggest for the entirity of our lives then they were revert quiet blandly back to being rather formless fatty tissue and as such lack that mild importance and eroticism that comes from rarity at the birth of most peoples sexuality.

Look on the bright side Jonluw when Summer comes around you'll be able to get a quick glance at stonking tits every now and then. Because they aren't out all the time you'll enjoy summer more. Hoooray for Summer and Boobies.

Of course it does, but assuming that most women have a lifestyle that involves more than the mere preparation of sandwiches I think being covered up is best.

I'm not sure that topless men are really 'flaunting' anything. Perhaps it's different in America but here in the UK the majority of men have nothing to be particularly proud of when it comes to the chest area. Mind you, it's true that for 363 days of the year we haven't the weather to warrant a bare chest.

I'm sure being topless is legal in many countries. Women breast-feed in public quite frequently now and to my knowledge there haven't been too many arrests. But if we're talking about boobs being a social taboo then it's certainly still the case.

Aside from anything else, a man who's caught staring at breasts is in for an awful time, regardless of whether or not they were 'on display', as it were. It's quite funny to watch what happens when a woman in a low-cut top meets a room full of men, suddenly the skirting-boards and light-fittings become incredibly interesting.

I think it's because of the whole duality of those glorious mammary glands, they serve as both feeding apparatus and sexualised objects.
The first part, yes, the second part is a societal thing, there are a lot of cultures that don't consider them any more desirable or exciting or worth looking at than forearms or ears or feet.

Although can you truly say a 5-12 year old would really be able to appreciate boobs? what with the whole "Not hitting puberty" and whatnot.

Same reasons we dont exactly like little kids being around a lot of cock.
Hey, I never said I don't want little kids around cock.
...
I ended up on some sort of watchlist right now, didn't I?

I don't get the whole "preserving their innocence" argument though. First of all, I don't see how being exposed to sexuality as a concept ruins their innocence. Second, if we didn't make a big deal out of them, boobs wouldn't be anything special that for some reason has the capacity to ruin innocence.
Basically this, and you've almost answered your own question: the initial why is western European society going back at least a thousand years, and to change it now we'd have to act like they aren't special, which is pretty difficult.
As an aside, I'm male and I'm really not comfortable with having my shirt off around other people; this might have to do with me mostly growing up without my dad; anyway it just goes to show it's all relative.

We live in a world where swearing is worse than extreme graphic violence and where people believe fairy tales over truth, there's no getting around it that people are really dumb.

Where a few people complain and the vast majority gets it ruined for them where the minority of people could just look away or change the channel. The world currently caters to the squeamish and dumb.

Edit: In other words you get something beautiful and natural censored because people are dumb.

I don't think there's a large gender disparity in fitness in either the U.S. or the U.K. Women are just as out of shape as men are in both places. Also, if you think women only want to see perfectly sculpted chests of marble, studies show you're probably overestimating what they find attractive.[footnote]http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18089177[/footnote]

Legality is the first part of it. It's not until sometime after it's become legal that something can become normalized, most of the "topfreedom" laws are relatively new in North America.

True that.
I'm getting sort of mixed signals though. On one hand, women aren't allowed to go topless around town here, but on the other I found a comic that depicted a man and a woman fisting eachother simultaneously in the newspaper today.

I wouldn't say it's a matter of being dumb, I'd say it's being stubborn. Like I said, it's been this way for a long time, and it would be very hard to change it. People are mostly comfortable with the way things are, and they don't want to go out of their way to change them.
