I'd rather say "I like to play video games" than to say "I'm a gamer"

Except it isn't. Immersion is feeling like you are in the game, not spending hours playing it. Most people who like immersion like it because they also like RPGs, specifically the roleplaying part, not because they are bad parents. That is a ridiculous suggestion.

Immersion is what people typing it want it to mean.

Like "mounted combat in Skyrim was needed, it was killing immersion". Someone actually typed that. If you can identify a missing feature and claim it's killing immersion then it's not immersion, that's called over analyzing and guessing. How the fuck can anyone know what's killing immersion if it was never in the game in the first place. Maybe it's because the mounted combat in Oblivion was so awesome? Did they expect Zelda quality mounted combat from Bethesda? After the terrible horseback riding in Oblivion that most people avoided once they tried it!

Immersion is on my list of words that make me cringe because people throw it around too much making it meaningless. Oh and yes, if you are so into a game that your kid starves or drowns, that's immersion!

Well yes, that person would be so immersed that they don't notice their child, but when people talk about immersion in gaming don't use it in that context do they? That's just being obtuse. Granted it may be a bit overused, but it's almost never used to signify letting your child break himself.

..and it's often misused. Immersion is also the type of thing that isn't consistent across gamers and sessions. You may find Skyrim immersive while I think it sucks. Tomorrow it may not hold your attention at all while I can't get enough of it. The word is meaningless in any consistent sense.

It may just be easier to say that it means something different to every gamer and therefore is meaningless.

Wonder no more... he totally tried to extol his graphical superiority over my personally-upgraded rig until about ten people nearby told him to stop being a total dumbass.

I mean, come on. The Xbox 360 came out in, what, 2006? Even someone with NO KNOWLEDGE OF COMPUTERS can figure out that my 2011 upgrade makes prettier pictures.

These phrases piss me off. Let's face facts people. Some of your are basing your judgments of people's intelligence, personality, and ability to make reasoned arguments based on their entertainment tastes. And frankly, if you're doing this, you're probably an ignorant moron. Sorry if that's harsh, but I'm tired of being insulted like that. It's just dumb.

There are young people who play games who do not, by mere presence, make the game less enjoyable. There are also lots of young people who do make the game less enjoyable by merely being present.

Of course, most of the time when I make such a judgment, it has a firm basis. Someone who resorts to profanity and threats based on a game is immature regardless of age. Anyone who has yet to hit puberty (or is in the statistically unlikely category of person who has already gone through this process and yet still sounds like a child) certainly includes people who are not 12, but the word in this case is not an absolute. It describes a person who sounds young and is demonstrably immature.

Honestly, I'm rarely bothered by such people. Any attempt at insult a strange child could conjure tends to be funny in a pathetic "look at that kitten fall down" sort of way and I have plenty of options available to mute such people should they risk annoying me. The only thing they accomplish regularly is being better than me at some game or another.

In the end, if you're 12 - well that's a shitty age to be. Sorry, your peers ruined it for you. At least you don't have a job and can play a few dozen hours a week thus ensuring you can just best those who make gross assumptions.

"Epic" is probably the only one. People misspelling words annoys me too, words such as:

Rouge -> Rogue
Asasin/assasin/asassin -> Assassin
Anywas -> Anyways

etc. etc. etc.....

It's an annoying word to spell if you're mother tongue is not english . (assassin)

OT: that is what pisses me off. Gamers who's native tongue is English and they can ONLY speak English. And then they think they make a better argument because they make less spelling errors in english. Better grammar and such.
