Canada seems like a pretty chill place. Maybe it's just a misinterpretation, but Canada as a whole seems laid back to me.

Canada is an interesting place. I'm Canadian, and the lack of a "Canadian" identity is one of the most defining aspects of this country's history.

Some good quotes about Canada:

"Canadians have been so busy explaining to the Americans that we aren't British, and to the British that we aren't Americans that we haven't had time to become Canadians."

"The great themes of Canadian history are as follows: Keeping the Americans out, keeping the French in, and trying to get the Natives to somehow disappear."

"Canadians are the people who learned to live without the bold accents of the natural ego-trippers of other lands."

"Americans should never underestimate the constant pressure on Canada which the mere presence of the United States has produced. We're different people from you and we're different people because of you. Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is effected by every twitch and grunt. It should not therefore be expected that this kind of nation, this Canada, should project itself as a mirror image of the United States."

I think Canada's pretty cool. I'm always the guy who points out how Canada helped out in WW2 just to be nice and did a fairly good job of it, too. I'm not an expert on Canada though so I'm not going to go into detail but seems like a pretty good country to me. Besides French Canada. Well, I guess they're better than the French. By the way does everyone else in Canada hate French Canada like I hear they do? Cause that would be cool. Can you say civil war?

ElephantGuts just reminded me of something.
I suppose this is as good a place as any to bring it up, what is America's problem with France?
Did France blow up a boat in one of your cities using secret agents, pay to have the agents serve their prison term in France and then set them free only two years into their sentence?
Because that happened to my country and you don't hear us complaining about them.

A defining characteristic of Canadian culture is hating other parts of Canada. West coasters hate East coasters. Alberta hates Ontario and vice verca. The English and the French hate each other, et cetera.....

Those English folks are just jealous because we get Montreal.

Most of the modern anti-frenchism comes from the fact that France was opposed to the Iraq war.

Well first of all I think I saw something on the History Channel about France being a dick to the US after our Revolution, something with stealing our merchant ships, or was that Britain? Or both? Whatever. Besides that, I personally think the French started it. As I've come to understand, French people feel a lot of contempt for Americans and blame them for a lot, so we're just returning the favor. Then again France tends to be like that towards most countries, don't they? Isn't that why it seems like Britain and France were in a continual state of war for most of recorded history?

And you know that the French purposely made their language horribly confusing and difficult just so they could scoff at foreigners when they pronounced words wrong? It's true.

That little bit of information made me smile, and for some reason I feel better. Does that say something about my character?

America's hat? Hmmm...

You know what's under a hat right? A brain. So in essence that is saying that not only does Canada control America as it's brain but that Canada is full of brains and America has none, relying on Canada or else it would be completely devoid of thought, intelligent or not.

Wow, nice insult Americans.
Like the avatar, but when I wear a hat, my HAIR and scalp are under it... I don't jam it over my whole skull...

Anyway, I think it's funny that whenever the topic of Canadians comes up, US bashing is never far behind. Why is it other countries view themselves in comparison to the US? Inferiority complexes?

Not that the US is perfect... don't get me started!

So Canada... wonderful climate, great air quality, really hot chicks who are also very intelligent and pretty geeky (on average), and calm, friendly people with great senses of humor. You've produced the Arrogant Worms, the Kids In The Hall, Joni Mitchell, Phil Hartman, and You Can't Do That On Television. On these points, I'd love to trek across your great lands and see all the trees and empty spaces... or at least that's how it appears on all of the satellite images...

On the downside, the Toronto International Airport gives your country a black eye (I had several terrible experiences there...), you've produced Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, Alanis Morrisette, Paul Shaffer, Mike Meyers, Alan Thicke, Alex Trebek, Martin Short, and Bryan Adams... to be fair, you've apologized for most of these, though.

On a final note, I find it rather funny that Donald Sutherland (a Canadian) had a son who plays the embodiment of US policy toward terrorism (on 24, of course).

I saw Hamlet at Stratford last Friday, and that was my first venture into Canada since I was 10. Here are my observations:

-The Canadian guard who checked us at the border was really cool. He was friendly and even funny.
-We stopped at some rest area thing where there were bathrooms and a little shop. I got a cup of delicious Earl Grey tea there.
-The food at both restaurants at which I ate during the day was delicious and certainly not overpriced, which is cool since I was paying with American dollars, which are worth less than Canadian dollars now.
-The performance (of Hamlet) was absolutely brilliant. It showed me things I hadn't even conceived of in the course of studying the written play (which I've been doing for weeks in my AP English class, which is the group that I went with). During the Q&A session, the two actors who spoke to us were very friendly and gave intelligent answers. They treated us as equals.
-People on the street were friendly, patiently giving us directions whenever we asked for them.
-On top of it all, it was a beautiful, sunny day.

Based on my eight and a half hours in Canada last week, it seems like a pretty awesome place. Obviously I'm in no position to comment on politics or anything like that, but having met some Canadians and been in Canada, I give you two thumbs up.

PS: You have tobogganing and hockey on some of your money. That kinda weirded me out. I'm not saying it's wrong... just not what I was expecting.

Wait, you've met someone that says that they hate Canada? That's like saying they hate toast. Canada doesn't really inspire harsh feelings in either direction.

Hi.

Im from Iceland and I like canadians. They are the NICE north americans.
I guess history has a part to play in this, since alot of people left Iceland after a seris of natrual disasters and famine to settle in Canada where they were welcomed and allowed to make a new home. Also canadian tourists are generally polite, medium spenders, that do not ask a lot of stupid questions. On the international political level, Canada has never told us what to do or downright lied to us. Dealings with them are well thought out and fair (at least from their side).

P.S. Arrogant Worms (Im a fan) said it best: Canada is relly big!

I have given this a lot of thought in the past. After quite a bit of pondering, I believe I know the truth about the Canadians.

If you watch the news, you never really hear about the Canadian Military. Obviously they must have one, but no one seems to report on them or even see them. This was my first clue in that something was odd. A country with no visible military force? Interesting.
actually we have a very visible one, it's that we mostly do peace keeping

if you want to see how bad ass our army is, cause it is one of the best in the world, read up on Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and a few others

we dont' go to war often, we more or less just go to peace keep

the one part of the Canadian military, tho it isn't really part of it, that you have to worry about is our intelligence agency. we only hear about when the screw up and that worries me

as for me i love my country and think it's the best in the world by far

and as for our love of tim hortons, there is an iphone app called timmy me, it geo positions the closet tim hortons to you based on your location.

even cooler the band Forgotten Rebels have written most of their songs in 3 different tim hortons, at least one is now closed.

oh yeah and my avatar is from a canadian guy, the artist lives close to me or did at least
