I'd have to say that the Earth series sucked balls, despite me not being their audience :)
I remember Earth:2140 was getting given away free with a magazine a month after it got released. It wasn't as awful as some of the other contenders though, just derivative, dull and uninspired. Never played it but Earth:2150 got good reviews everywhere though.

Vagrant Story. I say its the worst game ever because I actually gave a crap about the story early on, but like most Square games it did its best to piss me off in every way imaginable gameplay-wise. Then about 4 hours in I realized the story sucked too and that I had wasted a whole afternoon on a game I now had every intention of setting on fire. It wasn't so much that the game was "bad" in the likes of Superman64, but rather that it tricked me into thinking it was good game.

Man, that disc burned good...

The story gets VERY good later on. The climax sends hairs up my arms and back still.

Amazing soundtrack also. Possibly the greatest video game soundtrack of all time. But true, the battle system just takes the biscuit when you have to keep fighting the same monsters again and again.

I completed it using a cheat for maximum strength so all I had to worry about were the puzzles. It was very fun after that.

Six words - NIGHT TRAP ON THE MEGA CD! It was obvious the team believed that they were creating a seminal piece of interactive entertainment but ended up creating THE WORST PIECE OF SOFTWARE IN HISTORY.

Awful (sorry, non-existent) gameplay, the worst acting this side of 1935 and a script that was written by an arthritic monkey on a typewriter. The game was somehow made even worse by the inclusion of ladies dressed in skimpy nightgowns (and that is a hard thing to do). The whole atmosphere of the game was lower than that of a very poorly made porn film.

If ever people needed an example of how far videogames have come as an artform, show them this game and a copy of Bioshock.

Lock the posts: we have a winner!

Wait, I've got another one!

Did anyone else have that really Bible-thumping relative who, when you were a kid, gave you nothing but religion themed gifts? I have nothing against faith, but getting a devotional for Christmas was a worse gift than a sweater.

I got Bible Adventures for the NES one year.... good lord that game was awful.

Oh... oh wow... oh man.. I'm sooo sorry. Damn.... no one deserves to play ET *AND* Bible Adventures in ONE existence. Dude.. wow...

E.T. is only the third worst game in my opinion.

The runner-up is Drake and the 99 Dragons for the Xbox. Like any 3rd person, 3D platformer you use the two sticks to aim and move your character. For some inexplicable reason the rest of the controls were locked to the face buttons. Apparently the designers had extra thumbs on their hand to be able to press the buttons AND use the sticks simultaneously.

And the winner is...

Batman: Beyond - Return of the Joker for the N64/PS. A beat'em up that had the required jump, punch, kick, and hit with weapon buttons... but you couldn't jump AND kick at the same time. In fact, jumping only served to dodge projectiles and make rare platforming leaps. And Batman has nunchaku????

Strangely enough, I think thats its charm. I like the game (although I wouldn't play more than once every so often.

Give me a break. Have you seen the films that come out in America (unless you're unfortunate enough to live there)? Now those are terrible stories.

The whole point of Night Trap was it was making fun of teen slasher films. For me, the biggest entertainment factor is a lot of people don't get that and take it far too seriously.

Yeah, but the people making it knew that. I saw a video on Youtube about how it was one of the first really big controversial games. The Mass Effect of its time. The stars had to stop themselves laughing at how cheesy it was.

The entire thing with ET is true. I played it when it was new, and it was a baffler meal from hell. But to be fair, when that game was made, there WERE no games with endings, or even much of a point that did exist.

Don't know the story behind Big Rigs, but if it's a driving game involving semis, I would have avoided it outright.

Now, a game that DID infiltrate my collection with big promises, big budget, and big name value:

Madden 08. (PS3 and 360 versions, PC and WII I don't know)

They did nothing to improve on the game from the previous installment. They released the game with a franchise bug that dries up your free agency pool, and dooms your game to freeze at a point. Then they release a patch for 360 that only prolongs the inevitable, while telling PS3 owners they're screwed.

How on earth do you take a full calender year to do nothing but break the best selling football game ever?

And yeah, Superpower was ungodly terrible as well.

'Dr Jeckal and Mr Hyde' on the NES. I dare you to look for it!

1st you cant hit anything but everything hits you, then you change to Mr Hyde for no reason. You still cant hit anything, then lightning strikes you and you die...

...that's it...
God... I remember that game. The last level was the most awful thing ever.

FYI: You turned into Mr. Hyde if you got hit too much. When you were Hyde, you'd go backwards through this "Dark World" version of Jekyll's world, and everytime Hyde killed something, he'd turn a little bit back into Jekyll. If you made it farther back as Hyde then you made it forward as Jekyll, lightning killed you.

None of this was clear while playing.

- J
I see! Now that I know that, maybe I'll dig up my NES and have a go...

... well, maybe not.

Another 1 I had was 'Bart Vs The Space Mutants' on my Sega Game Gear. Yuck!

Worst game I ever played was Airport Tycoon. BO-RING!

Big Rigs looks so bad I think that the manufacturers ought to be tried for crimes against humanity.

Pesonally, I say the worst game ever is The Uncanny X-MEN (NES). I haven't played many bad games since this one. I learned a hard lesson. I can't been fooled again.

Jet Force gemeni for the n64. The only Shooter I've played where you have to hold down the right shoulder button to aim anywher other than at your own head and If you did decide to aim you couldn't move. Also If you weren't moving your reticule it zipped straight back to your face......Horrible game only got to the second level after a month of play and still can't get to the second level anytime i try and play it now.
