Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

It seems like a pretty bad idea to be honest. Everyones already mentioned the unlimited potential for bullying this possesses already so heres another view. You'll be naming your kid after something YOU enjoy, your kid will have to run a shit storm of abuse just so you can snigger to your self every so often and reminisce over that one time you killed a super mutant.

I apologise if this come over as incredibly blunt but its an incredibly silly name! Why not name him/her after one of the characters (one with a real name) then you get the refrence but your kid doesn't have to carry that burden for the rest of his life, I mean seriously what if he's born with blonde hair and a huge head.
For example I like the Beatles so 'John' or 'Paul' would be a potential name if I had a kid however I would never call him 'Eleanor Rigby McLastname' or 'Strawberry Fields McLastname' and I most certainly wouldn't call him 'Yellow Submarine McLastname'.

To be frank, no its a terrible idea and I hope your wife slaps some sense into you for suggesting it.
Oh, look, someone else who hasn't read the thread. /facepalm

1. Kids make fun of anything. Names, faces, whims, that tree over there. Names get no special treatment, normal or abnormal.

2. I'm NOT DOING IT TO BE FUNNY. I like the NAME. The Fallout reference is a side bonus.

3. "Terrible" is your (rather mean) opinion, and is subjective.

4. My wife is on board with this.
Ok I apologise and I realise that my views are subjective and you must really like the name, I'm sure it means a great deal to you.
However someone else posted up a really good idea, if you like the name so much change your name to 'Vault' even go one step further and change you middle name to 'Boy', hell change your last name to 101 or burrow a massive hole into the side of a mountain and call it vault 101, it's your life you can do whatever you want.

But you kid isn't you and its an incredibly selfish thing to push your own views and identity onto your kid who will suffer for it. Oh and to quote '"Terrible" is your (rather mean) opinion, and is subjective' you were totally correct everybody does have different opinions but whats to stop your kid thinking the same thing?

More harm than good, though I figure if he lives up to the name, girls will tell him their secrets...

Has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? Nope, still horrible. Unless it's Volt and you have a Russian accent.
Oh, look. Another opinion with no legitimate reasoning.

Thanks for the apology. That's awfully big of you. :)

And, since this is the 400th time I'm addressing this, pardon me for summing it up.

Kids make fun of anything. Your name being 'normal' is no deterrent.

Only if you don't want your child to hate you and everything that you stand for, for saddling him with the name that will make him the laughing stock of his entire school.
If he goes to an entire school that gets the reference and thinks it's nerdy... I'd be very confused. How can you know about Fallout and not think that it's a totally k-rad name?
Gaming is in the public conciousness, but having that as a name would make kids view that as him being a nerd, and having a lame family, and, in school, that's like commiting suicide for 13 years in a row. They look for literally any reason to hate you, ESPECIALLY if you have the audacity to move at some point in your schooling. Don't do it. Use it as his middle name, at most. Please.
Please see above. In fact, you yourself said they look for any reason to hate you.

Sir, (or madam, shit, I dunno), thank you for being reasonable and logical. Some people can't get past "omg they'll be made fun of!", like somehow not giving your kid a slightly different name is an immuno-virus against bullying.
Honestly, why did you make this thread? I don't see the point of asking for people's opinions if you have no intention of changing your mind whatever the response.

heartless d-bags...
And in what way is opposing a name on the grounds that it may encourage bullying, misguided or not, "heartless"?

I agree with the people who say that naming him that will make him a target at school. I also think it just doesn't sound very good. So no. Really, don't give your kid a name that will instantly alienate him. (Especially not a lame one like "Vault.")

It should be worth noticing that a kid will only remain a kid for so long...

I still wouldn't name an adult 'Vault' either however. And neither should you.

Man I feel sorry for your kid. You're projecting your hobbies and personality on him already and he's not even born yet.

One. Final. Time.

Children... ALL children, will be made fun of. ALL OF THEM.

Their names being 'normal' is not a guarantee against bullying. As far as targeting him a bit easier, good. Get tough skin. Learn to be witty in your defense. Soon, it will turn from detriment to bonus, as a conversation starter, or an aid for witty repartee.

Thus, I do not find the 'advice' that 'they'll be made fun of' a valid argument against it.

Furthermore, it's already been decided that Vault will be his name, so I no longer require advice.

Perhaps we can now discuss simply why odd names are so callously and thoughtlessly looked down upon, citing my explanations from above.

Your child, your choice (and the Wife's, of course)

My Daughter is called Aeris. I get nothing but compliments on what a beautiful name it is, even from the outspoken, traditional old folks.

I like the name Vault. If that name was in this country, nobody would bat an eyelid. It's not an in-joke, it's not a situation-specific name - a vault's a freakin' vault, regardless of Fallout. Everybody spends so much time looking up their name's meaning, why not just skip to the point?
I'm being genuine here. Vault's a badass name, and to be honest, kids will bully you no matter what your name is. My name has been bullied first for being Scottish, and then upon discovery it was in fact Irish, I got bullied for that too. How quickly kids can skip from 'Go back to Scotland' to 'Go back to Ireland, you potato loving prick'. Not much logic in schoolchildren.

Besides, soon as school's over, he becomes unique and it becomes a personality quirk.

Just so we're perfectly clear, it's the middle name, right? 'Cause I wouldn't wish 'Vault' being the first name of even my worst enemy. At least there's some damage control with the middle name.

If you do, make sure to give him Paul as a first name.

Or else name him something that won't cause him to despise you.

My goodness, thank you for being the first person to say this without me explaining it 50 times. Also, thanks for thinking Vault's a BA name.

You have my axe.

He'll probably have some witty chat up lines when he's old enough. xD
Remember, you're naming an adult, don't think of it as naming a child.

I don't see how anyone could actually bully someone based on the name Vault. Theres nothing I can think of.

Why don't you just call him 'Vault' as a nickname? That way you still get to call him it, but he doesn't have to grudgingly accept it if he doesn't share hobbies with you.

Judging by your responses you seem to have two problems. The first is that you are ignoring the showers of criticism and only focusing on the people who agree with you. The second is that you seem to think that your child is going to be exactly like you.

My dad likes Star Wars. I hate Star Wars. If he called me Anakin or something then I would be pissed.

In the odd way that names can influence personality, your kid is either going to end up as a reclusive shut-in or be exceptionally outgoing and social. The same thing happens to kids called Charity, Guile or Prudence: they either act like their name or become its opposite.

However he might just be unable to jump high (even when using a pole) but would be really good at limbo dancing.

And posts like these, no offense, have problems too. Like how I never once mentioned Fallout in my OP. Or like how it'd be his middle name, and if he doesn't like it, he can go by his first name. Or like how I was half joking about making him my gamer clone.

Sure, I'm gonna try and get him into games, but without any real pressure. I mean, I'm sure your dad has tried to enjoy Star Wars alongside you, and was maybe a lil sadface that you didn't care for it, but he didn't respond by forcing you to decorate your room with it and allow you nothing but SW DVDs to watch, did he? I don't plan on going psycho either. (At least not about that.)

As for the rest, please see the 4th edit in the OP. Thanks.
