Would you buy a Call of Duty game if you got to play as a Nazi?

The camp bit? A little harsh. Fun to see the controversy, though. But the idea itself? Playing the bad guys? Sure. We could invade Poland in a tutorial, invade France halfway, and for the grand finale have one great big final stand in Berlin, protecting Hitler's bunker. Here's how you know you've lasted long enough in the level: You here an audible "Thud!" behind the door you're gaurding.
As odd as it is, not for the controversy, but for the military perspective is why I think this is a good idea. But most developers would only focus on the war crimes part instead of the military part. Do a good enough job, and it's a regular CoD WWII game, with German accents, different guns, and different sounding enemies. That and you lose at the end.

Why does it have to be CoD? Why not any FPS?

Anyway, I would, because it would be interesting. Concentration camps? I'm more interested in the fighting in Europe.

No, I wouldnt buy it, because it would be fucking banned in germany and therefore in switzerland. On the other hand I`d like to try - it`d be a change for once.

It's Call of Duty. The only time it ever had some heart was in the first game, possibly the second. They don't have the skill to do it properly.

And if it's the same old CoD then I wouldn't care anyway. No point in doing such a severe change of perspective if you're going to be playing the same thing still.

Yeah, because playing a WWII game where you're in the team that kills millions of innocent people would not be absolutely disgusting at all.

Not only would there be a gigantic controversy, but there's a reason the only purpose Germans serve in video games is to get shot. Reading up on German war crimes is already insanely depressing, I don't think we need it visualized.
Don't start using the words German and Nazi interchangeably. We're already assuming in this thread that German soldiers were all Nazis (they weren't).
Ack, sorry. I'm just not really into WWII history, so I see Nazis and instantly assume Nazi=German. My bad for being wrong.

I think it would work best if you didn't know if you were playing as a Nazi. Say in the first level you're deafened by a bomb and are helped up by teammates, while going on to slaughter the enemy like normal. As you slowly get your hearing back you realize German shouts are coming from all around you and you finally realize that it's your own countrymen that you are shooting.

Of course, there are never any suprises like this in a game anymore as everything is shown in marketing long before the game comes out.

Sure, it would be able to be a hell of a lot more engaging and emotional then the typical shooter if done right.

I mean, WW2 is one of the few instances where you can speak of a clear "good" and "evil" side.
To be part of a group of German soldiers who become more bitter and conflicted about the side their on as the game progresses could be very gripping, and a lot more intresting then being part of good-looking American hero company 227.

Executing Jews in a concentration camp though? No thank you, that would be taking it way too far.

Maybe the last band of soldiers you're part of would find a concentration camp when they're trying to desert at the end of the game though. That would make a very strong epilogue.

Would I buy a CoD game if I could be the bad guys? Probably not, I generally avoid FPS games as I suck at them, but this seems like a plausible direction for the WWII FPS' that are still out there. I can't see them going very far with it though. Torture and killing innocents might sick an AO rating on the game. But then again: there's no such thing as bad publicity right? It might make a killing if the spin is right.

I'd definitely take another Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe though. Then Luckasarts can use the flight engine to make new X-wing and Tie Fighter games, but I digress...

You can't seriously be saying you agree with the Nazi regime?
To me there's a difference between the Holocaust and the Nazi war machine. One led to the lowered civilian population, and the other led to Germany kicking Europe's ass like I said in the original post.

Nazis would work better for a strategy game, or maybe a "death camp manager" title.
I would put the "Holocauster Tycoon" picture, but the mods here can be quite uppity.

It was fun playing as the Germans in Civ 2, I'm sure a Nazi FPS would also be fun. Hell, there are plenty of games where you're a complete dick so why not.

I'd lay down some money to buy a game like that (as long as it's for PC - or PS3 with mouse support) just to give props for the dev and publisher having balls. It would still need good gameplay of course, and not be Activision.

I think it would be nice to play as a Nazi just to see their point of view

Not sure about the story but i would probably buy it out of interest

Sure I would love to stroke my German pride as I kick Europe's ass.
Germany would still lose.
If it's a strategy game, you could just press on the attack on Britain and not attack Russia.

It'll sell because of the controversy but if it is done well it could be a very good game. Just so long as it is not tasteless in any way
