Would you/do you play a war game where your country is 'the bad guys'?

Even as an American (as to whether or not I'm proud one... I haven't really decided), I would LOVE to see a WWII game where you play as the German Army.

What if it was a medieval war game where the Icelandic vikings were looting and pillaging and just generally being bad guys?

OT: Yeah I'd play a game where the Irish are the bad guys. Can't imagine it'd be much of a game though.Ireland invades...invasion is defeated within the first hour...game over

Although maybe if we invaded Iceland. They don't have a military after all ;)

I'm also half romanian...so yeah, every game where you kill vampires also has me as the bad guy.

I rest my case.
NAZI VAMPIRE!
Did you watch that one?
I have this movie on DVD, it's completely hilarious!

I don't like being put against my country over and over again.
Also, I don't much care for the U.S. military. I don't harbor any enmity for U.S. soldiers (both of my brothers has served- one got out of the air force a couple years ago and immediately joined the marines). However, I don't appreciate our neo-imperialist actions or our ultra-nationalist, all else below us, attitude.

I hope to move to Europe someday.
So, it's rather a matter of politics that makes you want to fight your country, if I understood that right.

Well, I so far haven't fought against my own country ever, much less over and over again.
Sorry, I should have pointed out that I said that from my personal point of view (I'm a German)

No, just did a google image search
U.S. would be a fun antagonist. Powerful, strong, modern military, latest technology. Would be fun to fight a country like that in a game. Much more challenging. And when they have the stealth bomber and you just have an RPG, it would require a bit more thinking.
I see, from that point of view it's understandable.
As far as I know, there is a game in production that is like this, I think it's called "Homefront" or something like that.
You are an underdog in that game, but still an US citizen, who has to fight the Korean army which has invaded the USA.

I wouldn't mind one bit. Assuming that the game was... y'know, good.

But the thing is, I come from Australia. So yeah... seems unlikely. It's not that we're saints or anything, far from it. But it's hard to imagine a story line that involves Australia posing enough of a threat to be bad-guy material.

Although, come to think of it, I remember that some of the enemy mercenaries in the second Army of Two game were clearly meant to be Australian. Shooting them didn't bother me.

I don't know- if it was well done, why not. As long as it's not the American Revolution, because I'm sick of America being in everything. Alternate history would be nice, or something like the Spanish Armada being portrayed as the good guys, maybe?

A lot of people make the serious mistake that the "bad guys" of the American Civil War, a war so tragic and stubborn that there was no room for any definitive evil sides, was in fact that Confederate side of the conflict. Seriously, every game and movie I've seen so far, if there's a conflict in Civil War era, our main protagonists to root for will undoubtedly be wearing a thick blue coat, in the middle of August no less.

A villainous Scotland? I'd go for it. I'm not that much of a nationalist so I'd just enjoy hearing "haw, you" and "fuck's sake man, whit the fuck are you dae'in?" and the ilk in a game xD

One might think that it would be easy for me to enjoy a game with America as the 'bad guy' First, I'm a nerd and not very concerned with the politics of the nation, and I believe in Einstein's phrase that "Nationalism is an infantile disease; it is the measles of mankind."
Second, the American government is always guilty of something in video games. The Conduit, Splinter Cell: Conviction, hell, even the first Half-Life all have the US government/military as enemies. But that's always either some rogue 'evil' faction manipulating the rest of the governement; or it's just presenting all governments as equally evil.
If a game had me fighting US soldiers; not just as a way to assign teams in multiplayer *ModernWarfare* but as a major story element...like if proposed World War 3 in Modern Warfare 3 was to happen primarily from the perspective of a Russian soldier? I don't know how I would respond.

how many wars were there in which there was a definitive "bad guy"?

Yes WW2, but that's the only one I can think of

I guess everyone loves Aussies so much, because there's no game where you gotta kill them.
Well technically you do in Battlefield 1942- since historically it was mostly Aussies guarding Tobruk, and while in the game the British have the honours the Aussies wore the same kit anyway, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine.

when playing BF online I sometimes get put on the axis side when I first connect. Almost everyone I play with has no problem with filling the shoes of a German or Japanese and starting to gun down British/Americans/Russians.

And I swear I've heard of a FPS from Iran that tasks you as breaking into a US base to rescue some of your (Iran's) countrymen. Killing of US soldiers is essential, or so I heard.

Seconded. Seriously, sometimes I'm amazed we haven't showed up as the implicit bad guys of a game. I mean, isn't there anyone who at least wants to make a barely veiled metaphor pointing out what assholes we are? Running about all willy nilly invading other people's countries under the guise of a "peace keeping mission" or whatever, then stealing their oil. You know, we STILL have soldiers on duty in Japan? Why?!

Well, if someone wants to get around to making that game, I'll happily play against us. I'm always inviting Canada to invade us anyways. I'd like to get some of that universal healthcare. Even better if it's forced on me.

I guess that how Russia feels all the time in videogames: the bad guy.

I wouldn't mind if my country was the bad guy in a game. I think I would enjoy, since all my country's done over the past years was absolute sh*t.

But we couldn't possibly be the bad guys since we don't have any military power.

I can't really see England being the villains in anything other then a tea drinking contest, at least until we get the empire back. However, the image of soliders marching to the Sex Pistols version of God Save the Queen is mildly amusing.

Yeah, it looks interesting. But imagine how different it would be if you were the Koreans. Now, you have to steam roll through your homes, killing thousands of Americans.
That would be a much more emotionally impacting game than earning back your liberty. If you had to physically (press a button to) pull the trigger that would destroy your home town, would that seem more important than doing the same to a city you've never been to?
Granted, earning back freedom in America looks like a neat twist, but done right, with America as the conquered and another country as the conquer, it could be a much deeper experience.
NOTE: I don't want to blow up my home state in real life.

Secondly, I come from Australia. The idea of an Australia so large and powerful that it's the major bad guy in a war is kind of awesome.
Speaking of making Australia large and powerful, have you seen Valve's jokes with Australia, Austrialium, and Saxton Hale?

OT: As interesting as it may seem to play a game where we'd kill Americans (Yeah, Californian here), I think the the media would go haywire before letting that happen.

Granted, we shoot American avatars in multiplayer MW2 sessions, but to actually play a narrative killing Americans would piss many people off.
