yes I could not live with out bacon. Now excuse me while i go kill a small defenseless animal to feed my bacon addiction.
Bacon is a process. You don't just kill a pig, cut him up and instantly have bacon. You have to cure the belly meat, either with salt or in a brine of really salty water, and the smoke it. Then you have have to actually cook it, since all the smoking does is preserve it and give it flavor. Ham is prepared the same way.

If you want "Canadian" bacon, you do it to the back meat instead of the belly (ham and Canadian bacon are not the same thing).
I know I'm just trying to prove my point that I would kill the pig and make myself bacon or have someone or some factory make it for me.

I could do it to fish, I really couldn't do it to anything else. Especially little cuddly rabbits and stuff.
Bless all the little poor fish of this world...

Would it make a difference if fish were soft and cuddly?
I feel compelled to show you this [http://www.peta.org/sea_kittens/]

Also, hell yes.

I used to have ducks, and when they never fly anywhere, they get SO fat and tasty.

Like a cross between chickens and bacon.

I would love to hunt for my own food for a while. Watching Ray Mears's survival programs on the Discovery Channel always inspires me that there could be a better life then being in the office all day, and eating packaged foodstuffs. To watch him prepare a deer carcass in the aboriginal way, and having some shellfish with it, just makes me drool with delight.

I would. Sure, it'd be tough at first... Until I got hungry. Farming is hard, hard work. I'd rather go out and kill something to eat.

As per the thread title...

Im a meat eater, but this ones for the veggies out there.

How many of you would still eat meat if the only way to eat it was for it to be slain and prepared by your hand?

I think I would rather hunt and eat a wild animal than have one bred by me / for me. I believe this fits in accordance to nature's design for life.

(with the exception of vultures and other scavenger type animals)

Your thoughts?

EDIT: Hmm interesting.... The responses have given me reason to ask this question too...

Does this mean most hardcore gamers are all natural born killers?
Yes, and Yes :D.

Everybody knows food tastes better the more effort you put into it, this is just going one step further.

And I know it's not as gruesome to gut a fish as it is to stain a bunnies white fur with blood, but I'd go with either really. Food is food, and you can't complain. Besides we're pampered too much in modern society.

If I suddenly had to go out and kill stuff to eat, then no, primarily because it would be too expensive to get all the equipment and go somewhere to hunt. Being in the city makes hunting a difficult pastime.
However in the scenario that we always had to kill the creature ourselves, it would become a mundane thing and thus I'd have no more problem with it than a hunter or a farmer does now.

The problem for me is that I don't even want to cook anymore. I just want to microwave.

hunting is so inconvenient. and have you ever plucked a chicken? It's gross, and it takes as long as it sounds.

I'd probably continue to eat meat even if I had to kill the animal and prepare it myself, but I don't really have the time/money to get a rifle and hunt.

Yes, of course! My family own a farm and I remember many times in my childhood preparing chickens and even snapping the necks a few times myself. It was fascinating as a kid and I think it was a good experience to have growing up.

The downside I guess is that it is very time consuming and keeping/catching your own food and preparing it whilst working 40+ hours a week for someone else is not exactly practical. We still keep a few chickens at home but these are used for the eggs so not much of a time commitment.

I am going to say that yes I would still eat meat if I had to hunt and kill it myself. With that being said, I would definitely eat less meat, simply because of the work required to obtain it.
i am much the same, living fairly close to the city and with the zoo probably frowning upon killing and eating their animals it would be far too much effort to get the meat...if i lived elsewhere were it was much more available i would kill n grill rather often.

animals are fucking gross. could i push a button and have a machine kill it for me, then have it sent to the butcher, to be put into nice, easy to work with meal-sized slices, and see the words "you just killed a chicken"? yes, i think i could feel bad about myself for a few minutes. but if i acutally had to walk up with an axe, chop its head off, pluck it, drain it, skin it, excuse me i need to go throw up now.

I wouldn't enjoy killing animals but, if I do so quickly then I would go through with it, but then again maybe it will taste better then buying it from the stores.

Depends.

If i would have to raise the animel, feed him and then kill him ( like a pig) then no way.

If we are talking about hunting, then yes.
