Would you want a Katana?

I have several Katanas, a Scimitar, A high quality short sword, a claymore, a cutlass, a saber and a rapier. Most swords (especially katanas) on the market are cheap Stainless Steel made in pakistan/taiwann/spain crap, average retail about $135.00 US. A good katana is made of Carbon Steel* full tang and folded at least 8 times (though a thousand fold katana would be far better) and retails between one and eight thousand dollars U.S. Honestly though, they aren't great for defense as the Katana is not what you see in animes. A katana is meant to be used as an up close cleaving weapon, requiring inefficient muscle mass and expenditure of energy. I prefer my rapier, it's light weight, long range and lethal with only a little bit of practice as regards to accuracy. Not to mention finding good fencing lessons is far easier than good Kendo in the U.S.

*There is some debate about which material is better for swords. The answer depends on what you want the sword for. A Carbon Steel Sword will rust without care, but it holds its edge and sharpness and is generally a very tough blade. Stainless Steel is pretty, won't rust, but the blade is brittle, dulling after only light contact. Made for Display.

But if I was going to buy a weapon, I'd rather save up and shell out for a civilian USP then a sword.
Oh god, don't say that, or you'll start a firearm flame war in addition to the bladed weapon argument already here. There are a few people here who aren't all that fond of certain H&K offerings, and as far as I've heard, a USP is as large as a .50 AE Desert Eagle.
Actually, that's why one would buy a USP Compact, wouldn't it? And chambering it in 9mm would help solve the recoil problem from the .45 round. If only just a little bit, as I've heard both have pretty good kick-back. Back on topic: I actually would kinda like a katana, but a cheap one that looks really nice, just for a mantle piece. As for a real weapon? I'm going to stick with the [small]USPC 9mm[/small] kodachi. Edit: Wait, that was supposed to be quoted. Dammit. Hrm, I might be able to fix that. Hold on a moment. Edit 2: Oorah, take that! Edit 3: Oh, and for those saying they would want one for zombie apocalypse: No, you wouldn't. You may want one, but it would break very quickly, as cleaving off their heads would take a big toll on the weapon. Just go down to your local hardware store and buy a machete. [small]They DO sell those there, right?[/small]

No. I don't need one.
I'd rather have a fire axe in a zombie apocalypse anyway. Far simpler

I'd like to have a Katana in my bedroom. I want to learn how to use it properly, buy a nice one and leave it in my room[footnote]hidden of course[/footnote] so I would have something to defend myself with if Ninja's or CIA thugs[footnote][small]or zombies for that matter[/small][/footnote] came after me for some reason.

A more serious answer to my own question is that I would like a Katana because I've always admired them and swords in general. I wouldn't pull it out very often and I'd, well, just think it'd be awesome to have one. With my current budget I will not be able to afford one anytime soon.

Would you want a Katana? Why?
Katanas are awesome, my friends mom has one and we took it out and cut an apple in half in midair even with a dull blade, pure awesomeness.

I wish I had a katana :(

Oh! My friend has a black machete and I chopped down a tree in his backyard that was about 7 inches in diameter. Apparently he doesn't take kindly to the timbering of his forest xD

I'm a blade enthusiast. I have 2 katanas and a couple on shurikens (ninja stars). That's from my Japanese collection. My dad used to collect that stuff so he gave it to me. We share the passion for cold sharp steel. I can't count how many times I shed my own blood on those things. By accident of course, I'm not an Emo.

No. I would want two, so I can kill vampires with one hand, and pirates with the other.
What about the ninjas!?
I won't need to worry. By carrying two Katanas, I will be alligning myself with the Ninjas, and odds are, if I am attacked by pirates, I may even get backup from them.

And incase there is a Ninja Civil war, I would win, because, being my own Ninja clan, I would be protected in all fights by the Law of Limited Ninjitsu. (i.e. each side in a conflict is allowed the same amount of Ninjutsu to divide amongst their combatants. (i.e. why the Four Ninja Turtles can easily take on 10,000 Foot Clan Ninjas.))

The only thing I have to worry about now is Bear Cavalry...
