Hello fellow escapists, I call upon thee geniuses to help me. My xbox 360 red ringed and is now on its way back from repair. I had a 3rd party external fan cooling it, but I hear that actually could make my xbox worse off? Could you please spare a moment of your time to give me some tips!

Ps. I do have a gaming pc and I don't want a PS3 or a Wii ;)

Thank you.

well

I'll put it this way

many times, those 3rd party cooling fans MELT to the console.

Just try and keep your xbox in a well ventilated area, in neither extreme of temperature, dryer is better but don't worry about getting a dehumidifier unless you need to wring your bedsheets dry every morning, and keep it try and clear of dust.

it's basically the same as any other electronic appliance

Well yes of course, I do adhere to those standard practices, so maybe the external fan was to blame?

Well, the fans at best don't do any good.

360s break, especially if it's one of the older models, but yeah, there's not much else you can do.

I have an idea, You know those cold rooms where sometimes beer is stored at super-markets? Put your 360 in there. Fully out of box, I bet my tits that thing wouldn't overheat in a lifetime.

there are system problems you can get from running the system with the temperature too low as well

There's not really much you can do.

I looked after mine, gave it plenty of space, made sure it was properly ventilated, fed it each day, took it for walks... and it still vomited errors back up at me.
While a friend of mine kicked his off a table, and it kept on running. Though the disk inside (which coincedentally was mine) was scratched beyond repair.

Unfortunately there's not much that can be done... I went through four before I gave up and got a PS3. All of them were elevated, on an open TV stand (so they got plenty of air and never overheated), and while I did use an Intercooler on the first one, I can attest that those things do more harm than good.

Get an Elite... from what I hear those things NEVER break.

And those would be? Have you not heard of people using the 360 as heaters in blizzards?

And cost nearly as much as a ps3, And more then a ps3 if you play online for more then 2 years.

hahaha, I actually have a funny story about a disc getting scratched to fuck in a dropped console

long story short, I bought Radiata Story 3 times in the course of 2 days.

Do they extend that warranty after they repair it? (The RRoD 3 year one)

So you reckon standard practices, and no fan would be the best steps to take?

If your coming close to the end of your regular warrentity you might wanna overheat your 360 anyway so that they ship you a new one and you get a 3-year guarantee. My blasted freind got a 360 from start and his must be an angel because it finally died two days ago. Lucky smug bastard.

Well they generally don't actually fix your console, they just send you a new one. Or at least that's what they did with me. The new one has worked better than the previous one, it hasn't freezed once on me.

But I know my 360 will break once that 3 year warranty is up and I'll never play it again. While my Wii will probably last me for years to come.

Nah, They take yours and send you a new one and then fix the broken one and repackage it and sell it as new if I am correct.(I don't think I am though.)

Well, Refurbished. I'm fairly sure they send you a refurbished 360, repair yours, and then send it to someone else as refurbished.

nope.

and I hope you didn't send in your hard drive or any games in the system

because I got errantly sent someone elses HDD and game in the mail (really weird mixup), and they had no real fix for it, so they just told me to keep them.

Poor Poor guy in sudbury.
