Yeah. Gotta eat sometime. Besides, it cools fairly fast on it's own.

It's better for it to be on a solid surface. If it's on carpet it sinks in, and if it sinks in then it blocks the air holes on the base. Hard surface = better airflow. Of course, if you really want to keep it on the floor, you could put it on top of a block of wood, a hardcover book you don't like, an old box, or anything else like that.

1:Keep the console in a well ventilated room (leaving the window open helps)
2o not keep the console in a cabinet!
3:Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust from the vents (about once a week)
4:Vertical console placement seems to work better than horizontal.
5:Try to avoid using your fan excessively.

Straight up it gets better ventilation.

My advice is sell your refurbished console and buy a new one (a pro should do it). Or if you still have the merchant's warranty subtly induce a non-RRoD malfunction and get a trade in. Or you could just hope, might work.

So yeah yesterday really sucked balls. I didn't have the thing on for more than ten minutes before it bricked on me, so it wasn't overheat. The next one I get, I may stick a laptop cooling pad underneath it just in case though.
And they say consoles are so much easier to deal with than computers. At least with a PC I can fix the fucking thing by myself with no hassle.
Thankfully I qualify for their "sucks to be you" free repair.

yeah, don't conspiracy theorists say that car companies are intentionally making cars that break down easier in order to sell more cars?

I've had my 360 for almost a year and the only issue I've had with it is a minor one where GH3 wouldn't load some songs. Not a huge deal.

I've got my xbox on the wooden TV stand with my set top box on top of it. I've also packed it up in a backpack, throw it (gently) into the back seat of a car, left it for an hour, repacked it, abused it a little more and everything I mentioned in reverse. I had THE indestructible xbox. Saying that *touches wood* I think limiting game time would be advisable. And make sure it gets plenty of air. No third party stuff either. Microsoft stuff might be over priced, but it's a small price to pay when it's saving you from sending your xbox away ever other weekend.

If and when my 360 RRoD's for the 7th and final time, I think I'll just keep it. So one day I'll have a kid and he'll need a night light, I'll use the bricked 360.

There really isn't much you can do to stop a RROD they just happen, I'm on my 4th 360 as of now and it's just a matter of time before it dies too. as to the 3rd party plug in cooling fan they do nothing. I do though have a cooling stand it does it's job rather nicely. No plug in to the 360 and helps it from not falling over a wise buy I believe.

Don't interrupt it's power supply.

The number one thing you can do for your Xbox is proper ventilation. The number two thing is to make sure there is as little as possible between the electrical socket and the Xbox. That means don't use extension chords, or even power strips if you can avoid it. Also, this is where the problem with the external fans arises. Placing a fan between your Xbox and it's power source causes problems even worse than any cooling benefit they impart. If it doesn't get enough power, in the long run it will freeze and brick.

Use cooling fans that plug into the USB ports instead of it's main electric socket. They cool the Xbox without sapping it's strength.

you could take apart the xbox and install a/or several, high performance computer fans. A friend of mine did this with his xbox and there hasn't been a problem that i know of.

But personally i never have worried about it, because when i buy a console I normally buy the 3 year replacement plan from the store and at the end of the third smash the console in the ground, use the replacement plan to get a new one, and resubscribe to the replacement plan (you actually gain money this way because many stores refund their objects at exact price so if you spent 500$ on an xbox and got a 300$ replacement you know have 200$ store credit)

I have had my 360 pro for a year next month. It sits horizontally on a desk, next to my tv, with at least 8-12 inches of clearance on each side, and is plugged into a Monster brand high end surge protector that I picked up for a song, new in package for 15 bucks, original price about 150 dollars. I have yet to have it give me any problems at all, other than sounding like a jets going to take off,but thats normal. Also, yes those intercoolers are th work of the devil. DO NOT buy one.

there wasn't ever a recall

they extended their warranty when it came to the RRoD, but there was never any recall.

The warranty extension IIRC cost them only a couple million, if that.
