I've never been embarrassed to say I love games and sometimes spend a lot of time playing them, but I admit people's reactions can be ... interesting :D. I'm over 30, female and work as a teacher - I guess I'm supposed to have some other hobbies.

Never. I wear my gamer badge with pride. That's not to say I run around shouting it to the world but I feel my attire, attitude, and club groups I belong to adequately express who I am. And if asked I admit to being an avid gamer.

Well I'm pritty sure its obvious I'm a geek! I mean, I forced all my friends to go see Back To the Future when it came out in the cinema for its anniversary (and thay loved it! YES). So I think they know I'm geeky but I only ever talk about games if someone else shares the interest and thats rare because I don't play Cod or Halo. But NO WAY am I embarresed!

"hawt hawt hawt hawt hawt" is what someone might say...

Now seriously, sometimes people can be a little judgmental towards gamers, but I don't mind letting people know that I play videogames, I try not to rub it on their faces though.

That. Is. Awesome. I'm gonna try and find one, or both, the next time I'm out.

OT: I easily tell people I'm a programmer, so I obviously have no problem telling people I'm a gamer.

I'm not embarassed in the slightest.
If I went on and on about it then people would think i'm a geek but it's become socially acceptable to spend most evenings looking like a Call Centre reject whilst talking to your mates about games and stuff and of course playing them.
I don't talk to some people about it like a guy at work because he looks at me with utter distain before I can even finish saying "I bought Fifa 11 last night"

Are you ever embarrassed to tell someone you're a gamer? A lot of people I know see gaming as immature, and "for little kids".

If someone asks, I'll tell them that I do. But I don't run around and yell that I do, either.
Gaming is a gift of the Geek Lord!
No1 shd be ashamed of it!

The day I'm embarrassed to call myself a gamer is the day I hang up my controller and leave.
Exactly.

I would never be embarrassed to admit I'm a gamer. In fact, I'm proud of it. I enjoy video games because they make me happy. And being happy is what life is all about.

No way man, I'm always proud to be a gamer, and its pretty cool now anyway, can't really rip on someone for gaming cause nearly everyone does.

No I have no problem telling people that I game, I rarely use the moniker "gamer" though simply because many people from my generation or older don't recognise the term.
It's not as though all I do is game though, I also read a lot and watch movies and even a little tv, I listen to radio too (radio 4) plus I have several other hobbies... So i' m not just a "gamer".

Not to mention drinking with my mates :)

I don't tell people anything about me. If they know that I'm a gamer I don't deny it, but I don't acknowledge it either. Same for anything else really. People should really mind their own business. I mean, I don't ask them what they did last weekend why the fuck do they care what I did? Just being polite maybe? I don't care about that. Be polite by staying the fuck away.

Why should I fell embarrassment over something that's a part of my identity? Now, I don't flaunt it around in some vain attempt at attention, but I won't shy away from it because some people look down on games as "kid toys.". I love gaming, and I'm quite happy and proud of it.

Should people feel embarrassed for being a cinephile?

No, but then I usually say "I play video games" instead of saying "I'm a gamer" because games are only one facet of my overall identity. Saying that you're a gamer makes it sound as though that is your main hobby or whatever.

I don't think people see videogames as anything "geeky" anymore. Except for mmorpg's. That's still a no life-stamp.

I've learned through harsh experience not to call myself a "gamer" in front of people nerdier then I am.

I love games, but I am very bad at playing them. This means I only play a few games every year. The label "casual" in front of "gamer" tends to loose me any respect a real gamer might have someday had for me.

I come off as a nerd to most people, but I have a good sense of humor, I can improvise a funny line, and my social life is good enough for me to be friends with most anyone I like. Healthy mix and all that. But I do admit I'm a gamer whenever asked. People usually flip a shit when I tell them my gamerscore (almost 35,000), though.

Nope.

I was at a stand up comedy show a few months back and the comedian asked if anyone in the audience was a gamer. I clapped, and found I was the only person of about sixty that did so. He looks at me and says, "Have you ever played the game L4D?" I said "Yup, great game." He then said that he was the voice actor for Francis. I said "nuh-uh", and then he goes "oh really?" and then went into the Francis "I hate" schpeel. True Story.

His name is Veince Valenzuela by the way, and he's funnier then shit.
