Why would I tell someone 'I'm a gamer.'

I see no need to tell people I play games in the same way that I don't tell people I watch films regularly. If it comes up I will say that I play games, but I don't user 'Gamer' as a term to identify myself.

If someone asks, I'll tell them that I do. But I don't run around and yell that I do, either.
This is pretty much my approach, too. A simple question deserves a straightforward answer. Besides, the people who go around bleating about what they're into 24/7 are some of the most obnoxious people in existence.

Nope. I'm always the first one to ask them if they are fellow gamers. I wear game apparel, talk game, and even have my own, life sized pokeball. I've never been ashamed to be a gamer.

I'll grab Sheila the Minigun, kick down a door, make a TF2 reference, and kill everybody in the room. Then I'll mention I'm a gamer, just before insulting Yahtzee's love of Psychonauts.

Then I will flame both Halo and CoD, just for fun.

For some reason, I used to be, but then I realized that I have no reason to be, and then I wasn't. I don't advertise it, but if it comes up somehow, I'm not afraid to talk about games and game design--and in truth, most of the people I talk to are legitimately interested in it (partly because many of them didn't realize the depth of some games and partly because game design is inherently cool).

However, everybody already knows me to be a huge, huge nerd, so it's not really something that they couldn't guess on their own.

That. Is. Awesome. I'm gonna try and find one, or both, the next time I'm out.

OT: I easily tell people I'm a programmer, so I obviously have no problem telling people I'm a gamer.
You too? I'm known as the only guy in my grade who knows programming, or anything that pertains to digital media creation.

Ashamed of being a gamer? No. Ashamed of being an achievement whore that plays crappy games for easy achievements... kind of, yes.

Never have been embarrassed, though I've been irritated at people who think it means that I spend all my time in the dark, staring at a TV or computer screen and pressing buttons to satiate some craving for shooting stuff.
Assumptions like that just bother me.

I don't ever really come out and say I'm a 'gamer' as such, but I've found that when talking to new colleagues/friends/friends of friends that it's such an easy medium to use to get the conversation going.

I wouldn't say I'm amazingly good at games, so I don't act like I am some massive pro (and would fail epicly in conversation with anyone who is), but usually everyone you talk to has either played Worms, or owns a Wii, or they're really into it and you can have a big talk about pros/cons of a game we've both played, or get super psyched about something coming out.

I dunno, I never saw it as an issue and I've never hidden it away in conversation - I've always found that usually it's something everyone can relate to someway or another.

Fuck that, I wear my gamer title with as much pride as the President of the US does for the title of President.

Power to gamers!

Well maybe it's not always out of "embarrassment" but I don't generally tell girls I've just met that I'm a gamer... Other than that, I'm a proud gamer.

I say I like computers and games but I wont randomly tell everyone... why would I? I have other hobbies too so I pick the most relevant one for the current conversation.

No because I'm not a gamer, I'm a person who plays video games to relax. No different than someone who watches movies or plays cards.

If someone brings it up to that extend and I state the above.

I'm careful about who I tell I'm a gamer because I don't want them to think all I do is sit at home alone all day playing games. I'm trying to make an effort to get out more, and don't play games that much anymore anyways.

I keep my habits to myself, thanks. I try very hard to dispel the belief that I'm anything other than a finance wizard and budding accountant when out in the real world.

On the Internet, with my girlfriend, with people who are as nerdy as I am? Then I take the shields down and talk about everything from mainstream games (New Vegas) to wicked obscure games (Patrician 4, Victoria 2.)

If it comes up in the conversation ill say I play video games just like I watch movies, read books, play guitar, its one of my hobbies and interests, I don't say im a gamer because it brings up a lot of stereotypes and prejudice
But i'm not embarrassed to say that I play video games, because alot of people do and theres nothing wrong with it, its actually brilliant !

Sometimes, I sometime feel that with meeting new people, it'll lower their opinions of me, based on prejudice. If they ask, I'll tell them, and I always put video gaming as a favorite pastimes on forms, but I don't wear a T-shirt with it, or anything.

No, because I won't refer to myself as a gamer to begin with.

I'll tell people I'm an Armenian American, or a student, but I'm not going to define myself based on my hobbies or recreations of interests.
