"Dude, I'm sorry for you, and I'ma let you finish, but I'm in the middle of an intense game of Total War, so could you call back later?"

Something along those half-hearted lines.

Redirect them to a suicide hotline, they'd be better suited to handle it.

Most of you guys are dicks for pushing someone over the edge like that. If you don't want to deal with it fine, but don't encourage that kind of behavior.

You're just minding your own business when your phone rings and you answer. It's nobody you know, but who ever they are, they are saying they are about to kill themselves, and they wanted a stranger to console them. What do you do?
ask who they are and where they live.
call 0, on a diffrent phone.
have the operator transfer me over to their local police department
report suicide risk.

keep person on line until police arrive.

i've done it before...

or do you mean how would i keep them on the phone?
first ask what the problem is that they feel a perminent solution is the only answer.
ask why alternative solutions have yeilded no success.
ask them about themselves, describe themselves visually (unless if tense subject)

the biggest thing would say: 'i care. if i didn't i would of hung up the phone. and you care... because if you didn't you would of hung up the phone.'

the biggest soothing thing to potential suicides is knowing someone cares. As often people are pushed to that point because they feel no one cares. (exspecially if they reach out to strangers for consoling)

I'd tell them "You should feel twice as horrible for inflicting your emotional baggage unto me, What would I even be able to do anyway? Do what ever I don't need anybody elses troubles along with my own, Good DAY SIR"

Unless it's a female, in which I would take advantage of the fragile situation for my own sexual needs and then desert said female never to call again.

Tell him to eat a nice piece of gouda cheese. That'll help kick in dopamine in a snap. (Best cheese evar)

I suppose I'd try to console them.. but with my other hand, I'm dialing 9-1-1 and asking for instructions on what the hell I should about the situation. At that point, I do whatever they tell me to do, and I stop caring; whatever happens is on the person who called me, and the police to a lesser extent; I'm simply a middle-man.

Although, this has actually happened to me before, albeit not with a stranger. A kid called me who I never got along with very well; he started thanking me for always being nice to him (I wasn't a bully or anything - we simply did not get along very well) and for always being his friend. This immediately set off alarm bells since he knew damn well that we were not friends, and he was also speaking in the past tense.. you know what I mean, I hope. I immediately told the teacher who actually knew his parents' number. Blah blah, he'd apparently been calling a lot of people, and I wasn't the only one who thought something was up.. blah blah.. parents found him, he's still alive. Fin.

Hmm...a legitimate moral question that examines how society has come as a whole, likely asked due to the recent suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer at the hands of people hell bent on making one life miserable for the sake of their own pleasure and convenience.

*Reads the comments in this thread, noticing the sheer abundance of people encouraging the suicide*

Society's fucked. Good job guys.

"GOD DAMMIT! ANOTHER ONE OF YOU GUYS! THIS IS THE 14TH FUCKING TIME THIS WEEK! YOU'D BETTER KILLYOURSELF, BECAUSE I SWEAR I'M THIS CLOSE TO DRIVING TO YOUR HOUSE AND KILLING YOU MYSELF!"

Joking, even though that does happen too much for my comfort. I'd probably just console him talk him down, and have a relative call 911.

... Why are you asking this here?

If you want an accurate idea of what people would do, then go ahead and call them. Shouldn't be that hard.

"Remember, kid; - It's DOWN THE STREET, not across the road. You want to cut right if you want to die."

"Oh, and can i have your stuff? Cash, games, food?"

I don't have much sympathy in me.

I've had this call for real but it's been people I know. I tell them that I'm not qualified to help them and they should call a suicide hotline. No, they didn't kill themselves.

I also know quite a few people who did kill themselves. None of them gave me a call beforehand to let me know, in fact they all did a great job of pretending that everything was fine, which as I've learned is the standard modus operandi of the genuinely suicidal.

A stranger? I'd hang up, probably a prank.

I've got a couple scenarios planned out:

1. Let the dude/dudette explain the situation, then choose from my standpoint.
2. If it's a chick, I would suggest to come over and let her try out some fun stuff before she dies, like weed or ecstasy, because she's gonna kill herself anyway, and let her pay for it. Might end up to be a fun evening and maybe she even changes her mind on suicide.
3. If it's a dude, then just say "Don't care, don't care, don't care." and hang up.
And the last:
4. Be the good Christian I am and talk the person out of it.

To choose which one I use, I will utilize a "wheel of fortune" to determine the kind of answer I will use, except Nr.2 (if premise applies) will take 80% of the wheel. I wanna make it fair, at least :D

Indeed, I would do the same.

Why the fuck should I care? I don't like depressed people at the best of times. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
