Yeah I get that whenever I say Persona 4 is my favourite game ever. It's annoying since you can't explain the plot without massively oversimplying it and making sound horrible in summary.

Try it, it just doesn't work.

I get this over some anime/manga as well, not that I read some super obscure MLG amazingness all the time but i'll say that my favourite manga is The World God Only Knows and my favourite anime is probably Code Geass. Which is best described as the mainstream of the not-quite-mainstream.

I'm watching Angel Beats now (on episode 3, looks pretty promising) solely because one guy said something about it on a recommendation thread. THE OPENING IS SO HYPE!

It's literally just Angel playing a piano... HOW IS IT SO GOOD?!
Angel Beats! and Code Geass are pretty damn mainstream.
I would set the entry for obscure at Kids on the Slope or Cat Soup.

Erm, have you heard of Leviathan: The Tone Rebellion? That was an awesome game that I'd love to play again now, but unfortunately I can only get it to run with massive graphical glitches.

(which is almost always true, I've only ever met two people in real life (outside of the gig) who actually listen to them) or sound like a douchebag as I pronounce the most pretentious band name ever to have existed 4 times cos they didn't hear it clearly the first 3 times (making sure they know that there's an exclamation mark in the middle).
You think that's bad? Try telling people you like to listen to "Sunn O)))". I mean, how the hell do you pronounce that?

Yeah pretty much same boat. When asked if I game I say PC and you know the only game on PC is WoW. Yup, that's the only one.

...I mean I did play the shit out of that game for 6 years but that's besides the point >_>
im in an only slightly similar boat, but the comparison can be drawn without a stretch nonetheless.

the only band i actually know anything about (besides a few of the tracks of a bunch of other bands. I just don't really educate myself about music besides hear a song, think i like it, then get it through the internet, and maybe listen to some other stuff by the same composer, but i digress)

the only band i know anything about, is nightwish. Now, whenever someone asks what kind of music i listen to, all i can say for 100% certain, is videogame song remixes (via ocremix. Good stuff, all free, check it out), and Nightwish. When they say they haven't heard of the band, i find it hard to explain that they aren't very popular in the US, without saying something akin to "not surprised you haven't heard of it, they aren't really popular in the states", which sounds too much like the "hipster" saying so mentioned in the OP

I do this alot with music and people call me a hipster, mainly because when people ask me "What you listening to?" and at the time I am listening to some Experimental Jazz group from the 70's that were never famous or something and the person asking me the question thinks Avenged Sevenfold are an underground band of course of they would of never heard of them and it's pretty obvious.
I love your avatar. Oh yeah and it pisses me off to no end when people who listen to shit like avenged sevenfold and black veil brides complain about "the mainstream".

ot: and I get a problem with this band. Of course cos the phrase "you probably haven't heard of them" has become a caricature of itself I always have to go for the latter option and cringe. It gets even worse if they ask what genre they are. "well, they're, post-rock? it's kinda ambienty and shit"

Thing is that godspeed you! black emperor aren't even obscure for their genre, but problems still come up. Heck, most people I know don't know who Brand New, Bon Iver and The Weeknd are and they're not exactly local pub artists.
Ha ha I totally agree! When I said GY!BE have probably the most consistantly brilliant discography band I had heard people tend to disregard my opinion because their name sounds like a "shitty metalcore band" same with My Bloody Valentine as well.

Also Brand New amazing band (especially The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me) but nobody has heard of them that I know, I play in a band and I said we should do a cover of Sowing Season but they all disagreed because they hadn't heard it before and they wanted popular songs to cover, fools. Well... Gonna have to stick to Oasis tracks to cover.

I do it a lot with music, because I listen to a lot of European bands, and I am in a State where people think no music ever could come from other country.

"Oh what are you listening too?"
"Die Toten Hosen"
"Who are they?"
"A German punk rock band"
"Did they start in America?"
"No..."
"Then how could they be punk rock"

This is when I stop responding and walk away.
That hurt my brain :S
Die Toten Hosen is pretty damn good too!

OT: Happens to me with rap a lot.
X:"Hey BS what you listenin to?"
Me:"Just some rap."
X"Oh who? eminem? Kanye?"
Me:"Nah somebody underground, you probably haven't heard of him."
X"Bullcrap, don't pull that with me. I know my underground rappers!"
Me:" Ight, I'm listening to some Blaise B. He is pretty solid."
X" Who? Thats a stupid name."

Replace Blaise B. with anyone that isn't eminem or kanye or 50cent and you get the same reaction from friend X. He doesn't even know Tupac....

Yeah I listen to stuff you haven't heard of, mostly because they are not advertised enough, or local bands.
Also because most people don't venture outside of the shit on radio so they think metalheads worship the devil and "what is this instrumental crap?", "Ughhh Manson is a monster!".
Escapists however are a better bunch of people though. You are all cultured, some even listen to Porcupine Tree XD

I have. Had their "You'll Rebel To Anything" album but lost it several house moves ago.

Pretty much everyone I've ever met hasn't heard of the Scud The Disposable Assassin comics. Mores the pity.

I have a situation where no one around here knows anything about the music I like. I'll put it this way: If you're one of the three and a half people on the planet that have heard of the electronica artist Sterling, you're awesome in my book.

Have you tried finding people who you share interest with? It sounds as if you're frustrated that people don't get your past times. Trying finding groups centered around those things. Also, any gamer should learn how to explain games to others. Until its it stops being fringe behavior its useful for your own protection.

I will give the hipsters one thing: being mainstream usually isn't a good thing. If you look at most media with mainstream appeal, they usually aren't as good as something similar that appeals to a specific genre. Harry Potter is a good series, but I've read some far better fantasy books in my days. Twilight has some of the biggest fans of any series, and yet it's crap compared to most stories about vampires or romance. Call of Duty is breaking sales records, but shooters have been doing what that series has done for years, but better. I find the definition of what makes something "mainstream" to be rather intangible, so I can see why hipsters get a bad rap for disliking something that is hard to define.

That said, being obscure doesn't make it better. There's usually a reason why something hasn't been picked up by the general populace.

Definetly a cool series. I found it by accident, watched it, then wondered how it was possible there wasn't more of it.
OT I get made fun of by friends alot for only having two bands on my phone, Tyr (a Faroese band specializing in Norse folk metal.) and the Escapists own Miracle of Sound. I just don't really like music all that much, despite a friend of mine's crusade to expose me to it till he finds somthing I like, so liking one very obscure band may make me a music hipster by default/

My friend literally sat me down and made me watch Angel Beats. I had fun with it, plus it introduced me to a damned good plot and characters.

GET CHANCE AND LUCK!

Nah nothing can beat ALRIGHT LET'S GO! In episode 2. I'm waiting for the tragic backstory behind TK at some point... Annnnny second now. I heard someone comparing it to Clannad the once, I hope it's not too Clannad-y. Since Clannad had a tendency to rip out your heartstrings every other episode.

Yeah.. pretty much in the same boat as the OP being a JRPG fan in Australia.

Random: "What's your favourite game?"
Me: "tales of symphonia"
Random: "What the fuck is that, it sounds gay"

I have yet to meet anybody, friend, aquaintance nor stranger, that has played or even heard of tales of symphonia (or the tales series for that matter).

If I ever meet a girl who knows who kratos aurion is I will marry her on the spot.

What's even worse is that I am going to distant world's on the 24th of this month by myself because when I asked my friends to come to an orchestra playing final fantasy music they all just stared blankly and then said no, not that I really mind, I do have a front row ticket :D

So as of late I have been saying "You probably haven't heard of it" quite alot lol.

"I can't next weekend, I'll be in adelaide"
"Why?"
"uhh... it's a thing, you probably haven't heard of it"
I don't understand people like that, you hear something new and just disregard it instead of being curious about it.

Also WELCOME TO THE ESCAPIST!

OT: hmm, I think I have ran into this with Hetalia, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Stanley Parable, this website, and obscure but interesting things.

I have a feeling this wont change.

Which sterling; is it Lindsey Stirling by chance?

Because if not, then I have not heard of it.

It happens a lot to me, and I'm not even trying!

I say things like "I like Yume Nikki", which is ALWAYS followed by "What's that?"

Or I'll talk about my undying love for Boards of Canada, to which people will ALWAYS say "Who?"

I'll talk about my interest in ASMR and the lovely group of people who make ASMR videos on Youtube, and the response is "ASR-what?"

And the worst part? There's no way I can adequately explain them in the ten-second sound bite they're expecting, so I have to go with "Never mind, it's too different". Which invariably makes me look like a pompous douche.

Or do you? There comes a time where it starts messing with your head. Do I like Stuck Lucky because they sound like audio crack to me? Or do I force myself to listen to them so my "punk cred" remains high? We'll never know...

GY!BE is the shit, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think my friend was introducing me to some crazy Black Metal band of his at first.
