Empire: Total War.

Buggy, broken and the advertised and highly preview hyped Multiplayer Campaign was entirely missing from launch, and is still missing to this day.

Add to that, all the neat little flavor touches were also stripped out, no great general history, no pre-battle speeches and the game just lacks in any notable characteristics or personality.

For 2 years I waited for E:TW, I pre-ordered without a moments hesitation and the game was just trash. I feel that I have been lied to by Creative Assembly about the games features, and had I known exactly what I was getting... I would never of purchased the game.

Yeah man, that happened to me. Same thing happened when I played KOTOR. I returned to it a week after being initially disappointed, to find a game that i could barely manage to tear myself away from. Prototype sucked for me big time. Shades of Spiderman 2?

Spore: Galactic Adventures. Don't look at me like that, I had fun with Spore.

Unfortunately while the developers may have listened to the customers by including the ability to beam down to planets, I think the main attraction would have been as an expansion to the sandbox nature of the game, allowing you to explore planets and make so of your own fun. For those of you who gave up at Spore, the Galactic Adventures expansion allows you to beam down to planets, but only to specific ones for the purpose of completing a mission.

I feel a game like Spore really shouldn't daunt you with so many petty tasks past a certain level.

Darkwatch

I saw the early demo where they ripped off HALO's control scheme and had a really good story

When I bought the game, the control setup was sweaty balls, the story had been tossed out for the new shitty one, and the first level no longer had normal jericho, but vamp jericho with a pallette swap.

also, cartridge-loading revolvers

Oblivion. I was so pumped when I got it but I just couldn't get into it.
I was amazingly disappointed with Oblivion, coming from a long standing background of being an Elder Scrolls fan.

I was staggered by Arena, loved Daggerfall and appreciated Morrowind's depth and the love and time spent hand crafting a smaller, but significantly more detailed world.

Oblivion on the other hand, almost everything felt pre-generated and the main quest was little more than a series of fetch and fed-ex style quests
ending in a godzilla type showdown where I could do nothing but watch...
some heroic epic that was.

My initial disappointment was stemmed a year later, when I returned to the game and started modding the hell out of it, and now Oblivion is a great game to play... but only after 60 gigs worth of mods.

Spore

along with the anti-piracy issues and lack(for me) of re-playability broke the game for me

Test Drive: Unlimited.

What was the point of that? It was like going a hundred steps back in video game car racing. Awfully dull.

Defcon. I heard it was tense, atmospheric, and some other stuff. And I did find it tense and atmospheric, until I realised that it was pretty goddamn shallow, and found it quite boring.

I could say I had a similar experience with Portal, although tbh the puzzles kept me hooked. Just too bad there weren't enough puzzles :/

Oddworld: Munch's Oddyssey.

I was a huge fan of the previous two Abe games and I couldn't wait for this first 3D Oddworld game. What I got was the most mediocre snooze fest I'd ever laid eyes on. Munch's Oddyssey is probably the biggest victim of the "2D to 3D conversion" era and it herrald the end of Oddworld Inhabitants.

And this also. I felt no motivation to continue after the first race. Also this is a game which expects you to drive along every single street in the city. fuuuuuuuun

Bioshock was a bad game with great story and presentation. I was able to get past the generic FPS and overpowered "One Plasmid to rule them all" thing because I got sucked into the story, but I can completely understand how people could be put off/disappointed with Bioshock from a game mechanics gameplay perspective.

if the story didn't immediately grab you and leave you begging to find out what happens next, then there really is no point to suffer though what amounts to a really sluggish FPS with even worse AI and highly exploitable mechanics.

I wasn't really disappointed with them, but a couple of games didn't fit with the insane hype that was given to them pre-release. World at War for example. While it's a decent game, it was made out to be a God given gift, and still is.

Oblivion.
They got me all hyped up and it was quite disappointing. The AI was pants on head retarded and utterly stupid.
