I would volunteer, but not for the frontlines.I would mention what I'm currently doing(engineering school) and would go into a more technical field.
That would be best for everyone since I'm not exactly in tip top shape at the moment.

If you want canon fodder in my country,go to the economic studies part of an university.I swear, eight out of ten people I know that are in higher education are in the economy field.
Makes me wonder how the hell they're going to get jobs, knowing that the market is probably saturated.
Hell,to get back on topic, you could promise everyone who volunteers a job,and they would probably kill each other to get to the recruitement office first.

They're just as human as you, you know, they're just following orders. There are few truly evil soldiers in war; most are just trying to save their own hide as quickly as possible, just like you. Wording like that shows how ignorant and narrow-minded people can be.

I don't want to be all politically correct on the original poster- but German circa WW2 does NOT mean Nazi (Pet-Peeve). Members of the armed forces weren't necessarily members of the party. But think of the situation they were in. Your country had been raped by the terms of peace after the previous conflict. Just sayin'.

As far as the actualy question- sure. I joined the Army before, if we were invaded I'd do it again. I might end up doing it again in any event.

Ok there is alot of people in the army you agree? if they all didn't like what the government wanted them to do they could turn around and say no, i mean who's going to stop them? as they are the protectors of the government.

No way, infact id probably run to a peaceful country ASAP.

If i were infact conscripted, i would just desert.

That said, it would be cool hiding in buildings sniping out nazis :D (Though probably not as cool as it looks in my head)
Zombie nazis.

That being said, I would run. I would pack my wife & kids in the car (provided we had advance warning) & drive as far out in to the middle of nowhere as possible (at least 100 miles away from any major city & no where near highways/interstates).

Make camp, & hide out. I am politically neutral & refuse to fight for any manly form of Gov't.

None.

I wouldn't join the army because I'm a coward and a weakling. Not to mention that the Dutch army doesn't exactly stand a chance against anyone who might want to invade, and it's not like me to sign up with the losing team.

I'd help out the resistance, though. I'm a coward, not a traitor.

Yes, immediately. As I have said before, I would fight and die for Ireland. Assuming the war wasn't an act of aggression on our part, and we were in danger of being attacked, then yes, certainly.

Frontline combat too, I can't imagine being much good at anything else. I wouldn't want it to have to extend to conscription though.

And were we to lose the conflict, I'd simply take my rifle, scatter to the forests and conduct a war of attrition!
To protect Eire at all costs.

Us Irish nationalists have a habit of guerrilla warfare against armed forces.

Things usually aren't that simple. Do you know the word "deserter"? A deserter is someone who leaves the army in wartime with no intent to return. In the USA this is punishable with death (even though the last time this happened was in 1945, it still applies). Desertion is illegal, and in, say, a country with a corrupt leadership, it would probably be punishable with death, which would serve to keep the other soldiers in line. Them being "the protectors of the government" doesn't mean that the government will be instantly destroyed the moment some soldiers turn their backs.

Some soldiers don't think too much about war. However, after as little as a few days, they will get diarrhea. They will become nauseous, maybe addicted to morphine. They will do unimaginable things in fear of punishment, and these things will tear down their psyche. When they return they will be broken.

Some are convinced that they are executing justice, and that any action is justifiable. However, most lose this set of mind very quickly.

This applies to all countries, not just imaginary or previous dictatorships.

They are not beasts. They are just as human as you.

Here is the definition of beast:

beast |bēst|
noun
an animal, esp. a large or dangerous four-footed one : a wild beast.

They are not doing this because they want to. They are doing it because they have to.

If I had to, then yes.
However, I would avoid killing when I can and if I had the chance to finish my medical training, I would be a medic.

*sigh* You don't Understand two things. Firstly: I'm Israeli, that changes my situation abit.
Secondly: You, and most of this site confuse patriotism and agreeing with the goverment. I HATE the current Israeli goverment, Netaniyau can go stick his head in the ground for all I care, but I have respect for my country.
I know what you mean, I don't like the current government, but my land is worth fighting for.

OT: The Bundeswehr needs me? To the Tigers Tanks!
what makes this country seriously worth dying for?ok... to protect your family or friends, that might be a reason. But anything else apart from that?

Also there is nothing wrong with our current goverment. In the past there was something wrong with it, for example when they decided: "Hey let's invade poland and the rest of europe" but today? You have no idea what you are even talking about. You should really read a Book or two and inform yourself before you let something that braindead leaving you mouth
You know, it's extremely offensive to suppose that only because I don't agree with my current government I'd prefer Hitler? "Oh, look at this crazy kraut over there, doesn't agree with the people running his country, damn little nazi, isn't he?" Thanks for that. You know, there are more parties in Germany than the ones ruling Germany at the moment?
I am well informed about both World Wars, Hitler's takeover, the warcrimes and the Holocaust. Assuming I would know nothing about that und suggesting I should "read a book and inform myself" isn't very kind, you know? In conclusion, thanks for this cluster of heavy insults.

And we were talking about defending your country, don't forget that. So, what's wrong with defending your country? And I would not only defend my country, I could imagine defending European neighbours too as for solidarity.

Sorry, can't help this. It's from a comedy show called Kummeli and this is a bit of an ongoing scetch troughout the series. It's a pop-quiz show about music videos and the country the video is about. Every team, always, answers 'Canada', except of course when the answer would have been Canada.

This time, it was the Israeli team that got it wrong.

If my country was invaded...maybe, at worst I'd join the militia.

If my country wasnt invaded then no chance. Other people with a death wish can sign up instead.
