No not the army, everyone knows in the case of occupations guerilla actions see them off. Vietnam, afghanistan ect. Tried and tested method of resistance. I would resist at every turn, i feel very strongly about oppression and it sure isnt happening in my country. I think its better to die on your feet than live on your knees. Englands free and its staying free.
Lets just hope we don't get a hung Parliment on may 8th then shall we.

OT. Honestly not sure, I've never wanted to join the army and if I did I'd want to be trained properly, not fast tracked for cannon fodder.

Definately, hoping I pass the selection process in August and finally get in after months of sweating and injury. Its Afghanistan or the Job Center, and the Job Conter is the true living hell

Yes, immediately. As I have said before, I would fight and die for Ireland. Assuming the war wasn't an act of aggression on our part, and we were in danger of being attacked, then yes, certainly.

Frontline combat too, I can't imagine being much good at anything else. I wouldn't want it to have to extend to conscription though.

And were we to lose the conflict, I'd simply take my rifle, scatter to the forests and conduct a war of attrition!
I'm from England and even i would fight for Ireland if it was in crisis lol

Slightly off tpic here, but i could use your help. I'm going ireland on a holiday and was just wondering where would be good to go? I'm quite interested in it's history and stuff like that.

Maybe, but only with a serious threat of invasion. The government will probably reintroduce conscription before it reaches that point anyway.

I'd sign up for the home guard probably, but I wouldn't want frontline duty, I'd just defend my country.

Perhaps, I hope so, but I have no idea. Largely, I reckon most of the people in this topic don't really either. Some perhaps, like those actually signed up for the army.

The only way to know your courage is to have it tested. Fine nationalist ideas are fairly useless untill then.

No. My country is not worth Dying for.
Corruption, Deceit, Capitalization on the Weakness of the Poor.
Why would i defend THAT kind of Country? Who would? I won't
Yes that may be the case, but would you not fight to see through that your family will be safe from opression?
[sub]Well that was quick[/sub]
If it came to the point where my Family WAS in danger,[sub]If for some reason we had not left the Country yet[/sub] Then i would Capitulate to whoever is fighting my country. I will NOT serve a country like Mine. No way in Hell. I would Burn first.

I'd take my loved ones and flee before shit gets hot. There is not one country in the world I would even consider putting my life on the line for. A concept maybe, but a country? Never.

No. My country is where I live, nothing more.
I hate violence, and just because some idiots in suites think that starting a war is a great idea, it doesn't mean I should have to compromise my ethics.
If it got to the point where the government made it manditory to sign up, I'd leave the country.

Exactly this. I'd like to say I would, but I've never so much as thought about hurting anyone before so god knows how I would manage to go about killing someone.

Well, the good thing about Ireland is History is everywhere. If you're looking for recent history, you could try Dublin, that's full of galleries, museums and monuments. You could also try Northern Ireland, but that's still a wee bit dangerous at times. Still, good for very recent military history (past 25 years or so).

If you're looking for more natural or archeological history, the east coast and midlands would be your bet. Places like Wicklow, Drogheda and Meath are great for that sort of stuff, although it's quite built up there. And if you're looking for natural beauty, then the south-west is your place. In fact, all of the west, from Donegal down to Kerry, is really nice, although very sparsely populated.

Thankfully, it's quits small, so it's possible to see pretty much the whole country in a short time.
Thanks for that :)
God knows who many books and brochures i've looked in to find what you put in 2 paragraphs lol
And any history about ireland is good history! lol

I'm going for 2 weeks so i'll have plenty of time and if i particularly like something i'll see it again. Yeah northern ireland isn't too good at the moment as the IRA have started kicking off again because of that policing thing.

It really would depend on the exact circumstances in which I was in. If I could get away and go on living normally elsewhere, I probably would. Otherwise, I would like to think I would fight to protect my home and people I cared about. Not out of any patriotism or love for Britain, though, as I see the country as simply the place I happen to live, and I don't feel I owe it anything, especially my life.

It is the old question of whether it is good and glorious to die for one's country. Something the Athenians believed in (it is good to die for the city-state), but which is lacking in our consumer society far more concerned with fashions and fads then sacrifice and bravery.

My answer is yes, but only in a war of defence. It is not moral to invade other societies via offensive wars and leave infrastructure and non-combatants destroyed and dead respectively.

Good responses though people. A range of opinions here.
