Non mainstream can mean a lot of things. Too many things, really. Beck is one my favourite artists, and while I wouldn't call him mainstream, he is definitely in the realm of major labels and the like. The same is true of Miles Davis.

But, assuming you mean someone more obscure, I'd go for some Daniel Johnston or some Half Japanese:

Oh, Don Cab are awesome too:

Everyone has their own slight deviation when it comes to 'mainstream'

I guess I'm gonna have to go with Airbourne. 21st century AC/DC, to be honest and they're getting more and more attention, getting their music in a lot of places, but I find a lot of people that may know 1 or 2 of their songs, but knows nothing about or at least the title of the band.

Maybe ...And You would Know Us By the Trails of the Dead

If you consider Neutral Milk Hotel, Sigur Ros, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Flaming Lips, The National, Interpol, The Strokes, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, mainstream.

Machine Head

They are popular among people who like metal, but I wouldn't class them as mainstream

I'm really digging Phoenix right now; however, my favorite-- or most listened to band-- is always changing.

I don't like the idea of "non-mainstream" music. It's just impossible to define. Is Modest Mouse mainstream? How about Broken Social Scene? Should I just go with someone absolutely no one will recognize? "Yeah, Victim Effect is ridiculously amazing. You probably don't know them. They sold like 50 copies of their debut EP around their home town before breaking up because nobody else appreciated their artistic genius."

Pretentious rant aside, I'm gonna go just slightly unknown and say The Fiery Furnaces. Every self-respecting indie nerd knows all about them but hardly anyone else has heard of them. And since I can't stop listening to Blueberry Boat at the moment, they're as good a choice as any.

I've got several bands which I really like (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Clutch, Radiohead, Tool, Porcupine Tree... etc)

But at the moment at least, I'm really loving Alice in Chains, particularly their acoustic stuff. It's brilliant music.

Is Pearl Jam mainstream?
Yaarp. My general definition is that anything un-challenging enough to be played over stations like Heart, radio one or whatever they are, theyre mainstream. If it could go in Kerrang or NME its mainstream. Also, just cos 1 song or album from a band is mainstream, doesn't mean all their stuff is. Eg new Muse (resistance, supermassive black hole, uprising etc) are mainstream but their old stuff isn't.
Just a rule of thumb, really.

Bomb the Music Industry. Simply the most fun music I have ever experienced. All their albums are free on http://bombthemusicindustry.tumblr.com/ if you have any interest in checking them out. They are some kind of ska influenced punk rock. Donations are encouraged.

You know a forum is awesome when the person above you posts Buckethead and Abney Park as some of his favorite bands.

Heard one song on Sirius and got totally hooked on them. Super excited about going to see them in March, it's not often that they tour in NA, and not for any period of time.

Edit: Yes... let's just hide half of the topic in the op and make the title slightly off topic...<.<

Cheers! Yeaah this is a good forum, so many more odd people and metalheads than most places... I feel well at home! I live on those two bands at the moment xD although Ive gone of Abney Park's newer stuff, starting to prefer their old gothic type stuff atm. Gonna get all their shiz anyway when Im next in London.

Edit: Buckethead isn't a 'band.' But I digress...

Call 'em what you will, they're still good.
Oh there is no denying that. I myself own most of their albums, and wish that I can one day see them live.
Just because they're mainstream, that doesn't diminish them. People like them for a reason.
