Ah. I thought she was pretty good, actually, once she outgrew her "fangirl" stage.lordlee said:I can't say I really mind the look, but I call bullshit on the voice acting. The original game (though it certainly had some HAHA OH WOW moments) was decent overall. On the other hand, Dawn of a New World's VA makes my ears bleed. Or maybe Martha's VA is just so horrid it makes the rest of the game's track seem more horrible than it actually is.NeutralDrow said:I don't dispute the "shorter", but I'm still not reading you on the lower quality. I'm probably still hung up over the updated art style, increased expressiveness of the character sprites, and vast expansion of the (suddenly much higher quality) voice acting.
Can't say I ever noticed that (except maybe Marta; I never could control her as well as the CPU). I liked the way Emil handled more than Lloyd or Guy (about as much as Zelos or Luke), even more so once I crafted that unspeakably awesome Painkiller armor. I also never actually had to grind, and I liked the fact that the experience progression was basically uninterrupted for everyone (assuming you stuck with a small core of monsters), regardless of who you used. As for the Symphonia characters, I actually felt that made more sense, since they were always only temporary party members (and they were still great in battle.Even Emil and Martha aren't very good. There's too much emphasis on grinding the monsters, when the monsters shouldn't be there at all (or at least make it so you can CONTROL the damn things). As for Syphonia's cast, they're even worse, being unable to level or be changed in any fashion.NeutralDrow said:As for the other...you're one of those people, huh? I'll admit, the mons system took me some time to get used to, but I did come to like it eventually. As for the other, I think I've actually responded to something like that before.
<url=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustBugsMe/TalesOfSymphonia>Source.Depends on what you mean by "nerfing." Naturally, if they can't reach levels they could in the original, that's literally nerfing (making them less powerful). But if they can't do it, and there's absolutely no need to, it's not the nerfing the internet likes to rant about (ruining a character's usefulness). Seriously, Lloyd, Colette, Genis, and Raine are awesome whenever they show up, and the other four at least pull their weight compared to the enemies fought (just not against a hypothetical absurdly overleveled Emil or Marta).
We do agree on something then. Agreement a million times over on Richter.I don't think it's a horrible game (I actually think Richter is a better Tales antagonist than Symphonia's old one), but I'm certainly in no mood to sit through it again.
It's the bastard child of Super Mario RPG, so I suppose that counts due to lineage if nothing elseRatRace123 said:Does the Paper Mario series count? It's turnbased, and from Japan, but it actually has a protagonist who has a clearly defined gender.

Wikipedia often gets things like that wrong. I haven't played the game so I wouldn't know. I was just pointing out that it was from Japan. You can try and be smart with all the other people who thought it wasn't a JRPG but a different RPG.Wizzie said:Shadow of the Colossus, released in Japan as Wander to Kyozō (ワンダと巨像, Wanda to Kyozō?, lit. Quoted from Wiki.
It's not an RPG so it's not even close to being JRPG.

I think that scene would have been a lot more suspenseful for me if a little message that said "Colette has learned Judgment" did not pop up halfway through it. That clearly told me that Colette would remain a party member, killing any chance of me thinking that I would actually lose her (though I would have preferred that).NeutralDrow said:Well, I suddenly found myself screaming that I'd shove my swords so far down his throat he'd be crapping steel in hell, so...yeah, I kinda was.lordlee said:Haha fuck you.kemosabi4 said:My favorite JRPG experience is never playing one. NeutralDrow said:Um...Tales of Symphonia is my favorite game, and the one I got the most significant attachment to? I guess? I mean, it's also one of only two games where I found myself cursing at a character on-screen. Not cursing out of frustration. Cursing because I wanted to kill them painfully. Yeah...I'd gotten rather attached to a certain character by that point, and seeing her suffer needlessly was rather affecting. >_>![]()
