I don't dispute the "shorter", but I'm still not reading you on the lower quality. I'm probably still hung up over the updated art style, increased expressiveness of the character sprites, and vast expansion of the (suddenly much higher quality) voice acting.
I can't say I really mind the look, but I call bullshit on the voice acting. The original game (though it certainly had some HAHA OH WOW moments) was decent overall. On the other hand, Dawn of a New World's VA makes my ears bleed. Or maybe Martha's VA is just so horrid it makes the rest of the game's track seem more horrible than it actually is.
Ah. I thought she was pretty good, actually, once she outgrew her "fangirl" stage.

As for the other...you're one of those people, huh? I'll admit, the mons system took me some time to get used to, but I did come to like it eventually. As for the other, I think I've actually responded to something like that before.

Depends on what you mean by "nerfing." Naturally, if they can't reach levels they could in the original, that's literally nerfing (making them less powerful). But if they can't do it, and there's absolutely no need to, it's not the nerfing the internet likes to rant about (ruining a character's usefulness). Seriously, Lloyd, Colette, Genis, and Raine are awesome whenever they show up, and the other four at least pull their weight compared to the enemies fought (just not against a hypothetical absurdly overleveled Emil or Marta).
<url=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustBugsMe/TalesOfSymphonia>Source.
Even Emil and Martha aren't very good. There's too much emphasis on grinding the monsters, when the monsters shouldn't be there at all (or at least make it so you can CONTROL the damn things). As for Syphonia's cast, they're even worse, being unable to level or be changed in any fashion.
Can't say I ever noticed that (except maybe Marta; I never could control her as well as the CPU). I liked the way Emil handled more than Lloyd or Guy (about as much as Zelos or Luke), even more so once I crafted that unspeakably awesome Painkiller armor. I also never actually had to grind, and I liked the fact that the experience progression was basically uninterrupted for everyone (assuming you stuck with a small core of monsters), regardless of who you used. As for the Symphonia characters, I actually felt that made more sense, since they were always only temporary party members (and they were still great in battle.

Wouldn't have minded being able to control the monsters, though. And I wish the Mystic Artes were, as a whole, more flashy like Abyss'. >_>

I don't think it's a horrible game (I actually think Richter is a better Tales antagonist than Symphonia's old one), but I'm certainly in no mood to sit through it again.
We do agree on something then. Agreement a million times over on Richter.

I have a few favourite JRPG moments.
The first has to be when I finished Final Fantasy III (DS). It was the first game I've ever completed start to finish and I was so happy. It got me into gaming properly.
The second has to be Final Fantasy X. The ending on the Airship, with that music and the pyerflies, and then Yuna says the line we've been waiting for the whole darn game...*sniff* so beautiful. Oh and while we're on FFX, the wierd crystal grotto thingy that you mysteriously end up in before the final fight that you see in an earlier cut scene is an amazing bit and something that's really quite awesome. My final fave fave FFX moment (for I'd just carry on and bang on about the whole game) is the run up to Zanarkand after the camp fire cut scene, I just love the music, it's heartbreaking and there's no break to the victory music so the atmosphere is maintained.

Yeah, I've said my piece I think.

Does the Paper Mario series count? It's turnbased, and from Japan, but it actually has a protagonist who has a clearly defined gender.
It's the bastard child of Super Mario RPG, so I suppose that counts due to lineage if nothing else :p

Mine would have to be:

Final Fantasy X - What made me fall in love with the FF series and go on to play the others when I used to cock my head and not understand why people loved them so much.

Especially the ending, which I thought was very well done, and unusual in that it was a tragedy and not a happy ending per se like most game cliches.

Dragon Quest 1 - The first and best RPG I think I've ever played in terms of balance.

The climax and conclusion of the Xenosaga series - it comes together like a ton of bricks but it's soooooo awesome anyway :p

Various moments throughout .HACK

A JRPG is an RPG made in Japan so, if Shadow of the Colossus is an RPG, yes it is a JRPG. You can feel stupid if you want, doesn't bother me.
Shadow of the Colossus, released in Japan as Wander to Kyozō (ワンダと巨像, Wanda to Kyozō?, lit. "Wander and the Colossus"), is a Japanese-developed action-adventure video game.

Quoted from Wiki.
It's not an RPG so it's not even close to being JRPG.

On topic: Anybody else enjoy Yggdra Union?

I found I just couldn't get enough of it :D
Of the Dept Heaven games, all I've played is the GBA version of Riviera: The Promised Land.
If you've got a PSP you owe it to yourself to snatch up Yggdra Union: We'll never fight alone

Completely awesome game.

I would have to back Final Fantasy X. Sure, the main character is a whiny *****, but the other characters, the story and the script all really moved me.
Couldn't have said it better myself, my fine friend.

Wikipedia often gets things like that wrong. I haven't played the game so I wouldn't know. I was just pointing out that it was from Japan. You can try and be smart with all the other people who thought it wasn't a JRPG but a different RPG.

It's no more a JRPG than Batman:Arkham Asylum.
It's an action game.

From what I know about Shadow of the Colossus, it's not an RPG at all. Not everything Japanese is a JRPG. Is Lexus Japanese? Yes. Is it a JRPG?

Anyway, just about all of Tales of Vesperia, especially at the end when you see
Duke and that floating castle thing, just before the credits, or maybe it was just after)

Um...Tales of Symphonia is my favorite game, and the one I got the most significant attachment to? I guess? I mean, it's also one of only two games where I found myself cursing at a character on-screen. Not cursing out of frustration. Cursing because I wanted to kill them painfully. Yeah...I'd gotten rather attached to a certain character by that point, and seeing her suffer needlessly was rather affecting. >_>
Well, I suddenly found myself screaming that I'd shove my swords so far down his throat he'd be crapping steel in hell, so...yeah, I kinda was.
I think that scene would have been a lot more suspenseful for me if a little message that said "Colette has learned Judgment" did not pop up halfway through it. That clearly told me that Colette would remain a party member, killing any chance of me thinking that I would actually lose her (though I would have preferred that).

FFX on an HD tv. I actually got to see what things looked like for a change instead of the usual projected image I had on my 26 year old box. Who would have thought the Al Bhed Primers were actually books?! I certainly never knew.
