Does a saber count?
Yes. The Sabre has an entire fencing style devoted to it, and it represented the last commonly used western sword. It's derived from the eastern Scimitar, though the weapon gradually became less curved and lighter as technology progressed. It's actually a weapon associated with Hungary, as many of the styles and conventions used with the weapon were developed by Hungarian fencing masters (Where most of the styles and conventions of the "Small Sword" as exlimpified by the Foil and Epee were developed by Italian or French fencing masters).
I know that, i fence saber!

Come on, you can't go wrong!
It's a kama. (sickle)
With a CHAIN, for grappling, trapping, tripping and so on, and a WEIGHT, so it can be used like a meteor hammer.
Come on, people.
it can even be used like a grappling hook to get up into trees.

As a Jeet Kun Do student, I've come across many different weapons from many different styles and while Bruce Lee's answer would be whatever limb the opponent isn't expecting, I really dig the whip. Knife fighting is more fun to practice but if you really know how to use a whip, nobody can touch you.
I dunno. I've used a couple of whips, and they have their own issues. A sharp sword can cut through it if you stop moving the whip for even a second, the whip strikes usually have serious recoil issues (very fast/powerful attacks, but they're like nunchucks in that regard) and somebody who can read the path of your attacks could always run right up to you can kill you with his sword.

I like whips a lot, but you've gotta be GOOD to win a life-or-death fight with one against somebody armed with, say, a katana.

First of all, love the avatar; I recently started watching Bebop again.
You're right about a good sword being easier but a whip in the right hands can be much deadlier and can even be used to get that sword embedded in it's owner. Anyone who's studied Sayoc Whip style knows what I mean.

My favorite martial weapon? Definately a great sword. If you've ever held a twenty pound pound great sword and cut down some small saplings with one, you have put it down because you immediately want to move up to necks...

The best weapon ever in martial arts is me so next time you want to win a fight just remember I'm the best weapon ever.
Chuck Norris disagrees with you

Also, i would go for either a pair of Sai, a staff, or a katana ( obviously ).

When I was in tae-kwon-do I liked using the segmented staff-like thing with a name that i can't spell.

Nun Chucks, because they are the most useless wepon ever, a yo-yo does more damage, and your less likely to hit yourself with a yo-yo.
True, so very true. Even my masters know this so the only reason we train with nunchucks(nunchucku) is for the hand-eye coordination. So if you don't crack yourself in the face you're doing fine.

I'm a big fan of the tonfa.

Though the sword-chucks and wand-chucks would be a blast, hehe.

I'd say mine would be to dual wield a katana and a wakizashi together, as most martial arts use nothing resembling a shield, apart from handguards and those weird defensive sword thingys Michaelangelo uses in Teenage Mutant Nija Turtles...
Duel wielding is sort of impractical because you may always need a free hand.
Dual wielding is actually a common trend in martial arts. In the european style, the Rapier almost certainly required SOME implement to be held in the off hand because the rapier's weight and size made it all but impossible to defend and attack with the same weapon. Yes, you can use a single tempo pary-reposte in some instances (modern fencing generally revolves around a two tempo action), but it wasn't worth betting your life on (If you don't catch the angle of the opponents weapon correctly, a single tempo parry-repost generally ends with the both of you getting stabbed). Thus, the off hand was often used to hold a long dagger, a buckler (small shield), or in some cases a simple cloak in order to be able to parry without moving your weapon off the target line.

With the advent of the small sword, the weapon became mobile enough to allow a dual tempo fencing style, which meant that the second weapon was more or less just getting in the way, and the off hand was simply used for balance.

In short, if your weapon represents both your primary offensive and defensive implement (i.e. you're not wearing armor that can be expected to protect you from your opponent), and the weapon is relatively unwieldy (like the rapier, or even the broadsword as examples) then using a second, smaller implement to be used in your defense is often the best approach.

Also, some weapons are used in pairs because they are light enough to be used in concert with one another, but they often seem to fall into the same pattern of one being used for offensive while the other is used for defense at any given time.

why does everyone have to argue with this. it did exist atone point but as a side note even in shura no toki they had never shown more than one shura for each section of the trillogic stoyline.. "quoted from another site"
