Definatly the M1 Garand the finest battle weapon ever devised. I would also agree about the Stg. 44 the predicesor to the modern assault rifle. The MG42 wasn't that bad either. To be honest I could go on, bu I won't.... WAIT!!! The M1911 Colt 45 should still be the standard service pistol today.

And
Has had a disgustingly long history, was chosen for it's ability to eat pretty much any .45ACP round you fed through it, regardless of the condition of the round, and the fact that it would drop doped up Indonesian tribals.
I was about to have a fit because no one mentioned this, but you sir have effectively stopped the rant. (although I can still ***** about no one saying this earlier.)
Colt M1911

Want!
Why did we ditch this in favor of the Beretta 92 (M9)?

The Norwegian army just replaced it's good old AG3's ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AG3 ) with HK416's. I'd have to say that my favourite military weapons would have to be the K98 or the AG3. Any fully automatic weapon that fires 7.62x51mm NATO rounds has my undying respect. I've talked to a few friends who have served in the army abroad, and they all refer to it as the Norwegian hand-cannon. Which is rather fitting, I think.

Edit: When in the army, the officer in charge of our weapons training told us that when firing at enemies taking cover behind trees, the idea was to shoot the trees, because the bullets could easily kill someone hiding on the other side.

Because we joined NATO, and they use 9x19mmNATO, not .45 ACP. (Which is silly.)

The X8 rifle. Damned shame they cancelled that, it looks sexy, really future-ish. Would've loved to see that as the next standard rifle, but nooooo....

I want one, like, now.
whyd they cancel it? those look fuckin insane
Because they just weren't terribly great rifles for the price. The M4 carbine has WAY more options as far as what you can do with it, and actually costs less per unit. So they'll keep using the M4 (Though they MAY be switching to 6.8 sooner or later) until something that actually improves the design comes around.

just about any WWII gun that isn't Japanese. Also no I'm not racist! Learn the history behind all jap guns and you find they are horrible! just about all their guns jammed too much! Don't go thinking Call of Duty is historically accurate. They day they get historical accuracy in Call of Duty is the day my corpse spontaneously combusts and is raped by Hitler!!!

The Luger Pistol, made popular by its use by Germany during World War I and World War II. You just dont see that type of character in weapons anymore. Although obsolete, the Luger is still sought after by collectors both for its sleek design, accuracy, and by its connection to Imperial and Nazi Germany.

Personally I just like how it looks like a space gun.

If Iraq has taught me anything it's that the military does not care what the hell it will cost. From what I understand the X series was canceled based on feedback from soldiers in the fields who needed a larger caliber and less complex weapon that was easy to maintain in harsh conditions. The SCAR is scheduled to go in service to replace the M4 models in a few years.
