I'm not allowed to have a gun yet, but if I get my gunlisence, I'll probably buy this little gem:

The Smith & Wesson 357. Magnum Revolver

Yeah, I'm a Halflife-fan:p
Just so you know, that's an S&W 629. The .357 from Half-life one was a Colt Python, the original 29's main competition. Was even featured as the "bad cop" gun in oneof the Dirty Harry movies. :D

The Colt looks a bit chunkier, and that ventilated rib on top is just sexy as anything.
Damn, I just googled it and that picture I chose showed up.
Ty. :p

My first gun was a Ruger P89D. Servicable but a little large.
Second gun was a Baretta 8045. Small (I had just gotten my permit to carry concealed) but expensive to feed.

Don't own a pistol right now because I moved across the country and I haven't bothered to go through the process of getting a permit here. I plan to someday, and will probably go with the Baretta P90two in .40

My wife has a Sig-Sauer P225.

I'm a big fan of Baretta guns. They can take a lot of abuse. One of my best friends who served in the Marines during the Panamanian conflict told me a story about when his team was caught between two platoons of Panamanian soldiers and had to run for it: he and his spotter slid down a steep embankment and into a river. As they are running, he pulls out his issue Baretta 92, knocks dirt off of it, pours water and river silt from the barrel, and proceeded to empty two clips through it without a jam or misfire. In fact, he told me that he didn't get a chance to clean it until 3 days later, and yet never had a problem with that gun. Ever. That sounds like a quality product to me.

As to the 'why' I own a gun, I've lived in some really, really bad neighborhoods in my life. I have survived a home-invasion. The truth is, people talk about burglers and such, but that isn't what you really need to fear, or what you would use a gun for. When I heard someone breaking into my house, I went into my bedroom, locked the door, and got the gun. But I would only have pulled the trigger if the person(s) tried to get into the room with me-- trust me, I deeply and intimately know what the exact desired outcome is if you pull the trigger with it pointed at another being. Fortunately, I didn't have to.

No, it's the junkies primarily and maybe gang-bangers that you have to be worried about: they're desperate and crazy, and they have the potential to do a great deal of harm... and in the end? It's better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it. (Plus, it's pretty fun to go to the shooting range :)

For all you people arbitrarily dismissing gun ownership as being completely unnecessary, I would encourage you to go do some research of your own. Look at BOTH sides of the debate instead of just regurgitating what common 'popular' opinion has programmed you to think. Maybe even go to a shooting range, take a gun-safety course, and give target shooting a try-- you may love it.

But don't go spewing on about how guns are evil and how they're 'penile enhancement devices'. I read those statement and I just hear the bleating of people who can't think for themselves.

What was it? or if you will be a gun owner Which one will you buy?

On my 21st birthday i am gonna pick up this lil beauty:
(Snipped for bandwidth)

Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan.
That's a nice looking piece, I see that its an FN but what model is it? Looks like it fires those crazy 5.7mm rounds like the P90. Oh those crazy Belgians. I used a C1A1 when I was in the military oh so long ago & it was the most reliable, accurate and HUGE weapon I've ever fired. Butt ugly, but who cares? It had a solid wood stock & would fire under any conditions & never jammed on me once, unlike certain mostly plastic assault rifles I could name ***Cough M16 cough cough, M14 cough***

I'm not a gun nut but one of these days I want to pick up a pistol for target shooting, basically just darts for big boys, not self defense. I'm thinking of something like an HK .USP or a MARK 23, but now I'm thinking of looking at FNs...

The British government believes self-defence is for pussies. I am not allowed to enact "unnecessary force", whatever that may mean. I think it means that so long as I don't touch the burglar and enact a hilarious "Home Alone" defence, sure to make the judges, too busy releasing multiple rapists after a year or so in prison, laugh their heads off (because for some reason in Britain, we use reverse law - self-defending victims get harsher punishments than the damn criminals - one criminal broke his leg while robbing a house, without the owner doing anything, and successfully sued him for negligence) and take pity on lowly old me.

Sigh, too true. Lately there was this big deal about these robbers that broke into a mans house, tied up a guy and his family, threatened to kill them, and robbed them in front of their eyes. The dad of the house broke out and started to attack them and chased them down the road. He picked up his brother on the way somehow, caught up to one, and beat the crap out of him. I personally think he deserved it, but the justice system decided the father needed 4 years in prison for following his instinct and protecting his family. Sickening.

Anyway more on track I'd probably like to keep a S&W revolver. I'm not gonna lie I have no idea about models and types but if I was going to get one it would be a S&W for purely aesthetic reasons.
I could have sworn the guy was aquitted for that recently. And quite frankly I have been advised as a student of martial arts that it is better to be facing a stupid lawsuit and be alive, than be dead of a stabbing that you were trained to deal with but were afraid of the consequences.

I have grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyotes(which are more of a problem than the wolves and bears combined!)...

I agree with you about the coyotes, only animal I have had to shoot in a long time. I just disagree with you about the other snippets up there.

Normally when I encounter wildlife up close like that I give it a good shout and it runs away. Even cougars, which I have seen one before. Believe me I had my pistol drawn and aimed on him the moment I saw him, and he was gone half a second later. That same handgun shoot and killed that coyote. Handguns are great defense weapons even in the middle of the woods. Being out to hunt I would take the rifle, being out for a stroll, or working I would take the handgun. Hell even if I was out to hunt I would still have a fair size sidearm, just in case.

My first gun was a Mossberg Maverick. The first gun I ever shot was a Cricket .22 (assuming that a Red Ryder isn't a firearm).

Personally I only collect Airsoft Guns (High Quality Only) in place of real gun collecting.

Owning real firearms seems like way too much of a hassle or liability during normal life. Besides, if someone tries to break into my house, I can introduce them to my sword collection instead (I am trained in Aikido and Iaido)... :)

Although, if I had to pick one, I would have to go with the initial poster and go with an FN Five-Seven

If I were to get a gun it would probably be a .22 rifle.

I definitely don't need a handgun while I'm out on the town, but a small rifle to shoot spiders when they get in the house would be useful.
...how big are the spiders where you live? a simple smack with a shoe should be enough to kill them...

OT: whatever I can find really, just a simple handgun for self defense in the home

Serious answers are appreciated (someone will say BFG 9000) but whatever, have fun with it.

EDIT: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. THIS ISNT A THREAD ABOUT GUN RIGHTS! IF YOU DONT WANT ONE THEN FINE! STOP JUDGING THOSE WHO WILL BUY ONE OR ALREADY OWN ONE. Take your opinions to the right place, they will be appreciated and this is not the right thread to start a gun ownership debate.

Look at your state's laws, the Five-Seven and it's rounds aren't legal in all states. Also, not all states allow the full 20 round magazine.
No offense, but that's a stupid gun to buy. You can PM me if you want some more opinions.

But if you're buying it because you saw it in Battlestar Galatica or a game and/or because it has armor piercing abilities, then you should also know that it's basically a super .22 which means it just doesn't have reliable take down power.

If you want something for defense, look to the .357 or .40, they both have a 97-98% one hit take down with hollow point ammo.
Get a Sig 229 .40, it was made for the .40 and Sig has the most reliable production guns on the planet. Next best would be a HK USP which has a lock inside the mag well so you can lock up the gun and make it useless if you want. I like the .45, but the .40 is good too.

The BEST gun, if you're willing to spend the money, that shoots every type of ammo and reload without fail is what the LAPD SWAT team uses. Normally 1911 clones jam and are picky about ammo, but the Kimber 1911 made for the LAPD SWAT. It's a .45 and it's not picky about ammo but it shoots incredibly accurately. The .45 has great take down power and the gun can be easily customized. Get the night sights and get it in black and you've got a great combat gun. The downside is it's a little pricey.

If you still want an armor piercing gun, buy a rifle .308 and up will all be armor piercing and at much higher ranges where the other person might not shoot back. If they're wearing armor, then chances are they can shoot back. Kevlar can't stop hunting rifle rounds, it's part of the reason snipers use them.

The other thing to consider if shit hits the fan, is you want a common round that you can scavenge everywhere and the 5.7 is not at all common. The .9mm, .40, and .45 are some of the most common rounds in America.

Oh, my first was a Sig 229 in .40. If you ask the people at your local firing range, they'll have the most informed opinions because their rental guns get a work out and they're not trying to sell you anything. They know what jams and what doesn't, what's reliable and what's not.
Please don't buy the Five-Seven, I bought the P99 because it was James Bond's new gun and I hate it, the trigger sucks. It has a lot of features on paper but it doesn't matter if the trigger sucks.
Same with the Five Seven, the trigger sucks, you'll never fire as naturally as you can with a Sig, HK or Kimber.
