First guns I owned (about the same time and I don't remember what came first) were a 30-30 lever action and a 12gauge pump.

Guns are hideous things and I'm glad to be able to say never to have touched one.
Thank God they're not that easy to get over here as they are in the States.

i'm not sure if i would trust myself with a gun, because i'd put a flashligh on it and keep it loaded. then i'd use it as a flashlight, trip and shoot something/one.

Any evidence for that claim? I'm sorry, but I get very worried when I hear the younger generations speak so cavalierly about such dangerous weapons.
Supporting this position. You people and your guns! You know that once you buy a gun, it is by far the most likely weapon to kill you if you are to be murdered, right?
Second.
this isn't a thread about debating whether owning a gun is good or not. If you don't want a gun don't post in this thread, there are others for you to debate on.
seconding the "retards shouldn't be allowed firearms" argument.

there's a bloke in my class who was listening in on our conversation about what certain objects do to others opinion of you based purely on what they see. he pulled out a 3 inch flick knife (in england) and asked what we thought of him now. the answer for those who couldn't guess was "now we think your a retarded dickhead who's going to have his head caved in one day when you pick on someone who is simply not scared by you."

there has been people on this thread who have said they need protection, firstly, bollocks to that, what will you ever be carrying that is worth your life or the life of someone else?? secondly, many gun owners are killed by their own object of fetish.

in any event this thread isn't disscusing the pros and cons of gun ownership, its some bloke from the deep south boasting about what gun he's going to get so he can grow his ego further.

My first and only gun so far. It sure is pretty and fun to shoot. Heavy too since it's all stainless steel.

but it does NOT increase your likelyhood to be murdered. and this brings me to another point, why is it that the weapon used is more important that the reason the murder occurred?

in any case, this is NOT a gun debate, but a thread about what a persons first gun was if they owned one. if your going to come in here with nothing but arguing that guns are good/bad there are other threads for that.

mine was a cz-75 i got a few months ago.
The bolded statement makes this a debate. Had he excluded that claim, we wouldn't be discussing policy.

I only have an air-rifle. The idea that everyone is armed is scary, anyone can flip out at any moment and shoot people. I understand the American 'being armed for protection' back during revolution and such but I still think present day it is just asking for trouble.

Fucking hell! A Five-SeveN? Are you a cop or in the military, or are gun laws really that lax where you live? Do you really need a pistol that can fit armor piercing rounds but has light stopping power?

Okay...to answer your question, I'm licensed. But I'll follow all my friends working in personal security and law enforcement:

It might not look too fancy, but it's the gold standard. Light, simple, reliable and if the first round doesn't stop an attacker, you'll have 19 more rounds in the magazine to correct your mistake.

guns aren't legal where I live.
The only rifle I've ever fired was a chinese 5.5 millimeter bolt action rifle.
when I get older I'm probably migrating to Turkey, where you can buy weapons easily.

I only fired a real firearm once. It was a .22 rifle, on a block of ice, about 10 years ago.

Wow, disinformation ahoy. The armour piercing ammunition for the FN is only available to police and law enforcement. The claim that gun owners were more likely to be shot by their own weapons was based on a study of not of private citizens, but of police officers, who in gun circles have notoriously lax gun handling habits. And also tend to lose far more weapons proportionately than private gun owners, but that's neither here nor there.

On topic, the first gun I fired was a battered CZ-75 9mil. I own a licensed .40 caliber Hk Usp Compact. Where I live, we tend to get violent home invasions and a fair bit of violent crime. So I got myself a firearm and the training to go with it - and it's the training that makes all the difference, not the weapon. Criminals by and large don't have any real proficiency with weapons, and count on the fear factor to win confrontations.

As for the OP's choice - the FN would not be my first choice, since the ammunition is expensive and hard to come by, and the gun itself has a bad reputation, which may stack up against you should you ever have to defend using it in court. On the flipside, it's light, accurate and has virtually no recoil, so follow-up shots are very very quick. The round itself isn't great - less the armour-piercing ability of its military cousin, it's just a necked down mouse round - but its size means that a standard magazine carries quite a few.
