My first rifle was a .22 given to me when I turned 14, but the first gun I bought for myself was this beauty:

And to ward off the oh-so-enlightened idealists, I make no claim that it's for self-defense; it's purely for fun.

The British government believes self-defence is for pussies. I am not allowed to enact "unnecessary force", whatever that may mean. I think it means that so long as I don't touch the burglar and enact a hilarious "Home Alone" defence, sure to make the judges, too busy releasing multiple rapists after a year or so in prison, laugh their heads off (because for some reason in Britain, we use reverse law - self-defending victims get harsher punishments than the damn criminals - one criminal broke his leg while robbing a house, without the owner doing anything, and successfully sued him for negligence) and take pity on lowly old me.

Seeing as I find the multiple failures of the Second Amendment the news displays a lot absolutely hilarious, I wouldn't really want a gun, but if I had to have one, I'd go for a Welrod.

What was it? or if you will be a gun owner Which one will you buy?

On my 21st birthday i am gonna pick up this lil beauty:

Its mainly of self defense, The way society is progressing you dont know when shit will hit the fan.

Serious answers are appreciated (someone will say BFG 9000) but whatever, have fun with it.
why five-seven?
its ammunition is kinda rare and expensive. stick with an 9mm if you like to shoot a lot.
if not; five-seven is a cool looking accurate weapon.

how much are going to pay for it? isnt it like 1000 bucks

I probably will never get a gun, but when I would I'd get something like a USP .45, that thing screams sexy efficiency:

Just for recreational purposes of course, target shooting and the likes.

More important is the fact that most attackers, muggers and burglars, usually have the advantage of surprise. Especially when they know it's not unlikely guns are around they'll arm themselves first, and that's indeed where your vicious circle comes in. It's just plain stupid to try to grab your gun when a scared burglar or a simple mugger is already pointing a gun at you, or holding you at knife point.

Plus, if you really want to defend yourself against burglars, just make sure you have proper locks on your windows and doors. Especially in densely populated area's, burglars won't go through the trouble of trying to pry through a properly secured door or bash in a good window (it's not that easy, going through insulating glazing) and will look for a better target. Ask any ex-burglar, they don't want to be caught and just want to get in and out quickly to minimise the chance of being detected. If they can't, they'll move on.

And again, against muggers it won't be much use anyway since they attack you first, trying to grab for your own weapon when they're already threatening you is suicidal. A martial art like krav magna will more likely get you through a mugging unharmed than a pistol.

my first gun (that I fired. that I intend to eventually own through inheritance) was my dads 22 rifle aka a "quirrel gun" I have found memories of blasting bottles to oblivion with that thing.

As far as ownership goes though, being a nostalgia freak, I would love to own one of these:
a period era Thompson submachine gun from the 1930's with a round drum magazine.

and if I need to a handgun to go along with my Thompson. This:

would be a perfect match
it can fire the 357 round and lower caliber ammo depending on what the sitution calls for

This thread has genuinely upset me. How can so many people have guns?

Sure, you might say, "It's for self defence", but defence from what? Other people with guns? A pretty vicious cycle.

Its all you gun nuts that are killing society.
From a practical standpoint, banning guns would not get rid of the hundreds of millions of guns that are already in existence. Even if law abiding gun owners were to voluntarily comply with the hypothetical law and turn in their guns, the criminals would not do the same. Since we as a country value our 4th Amendment right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure, the police would be unable to go door to door searching for the guns without probable cause, and even were the police to do so, the criminals could simply hide their guns. Additionally, the cost and time needed to exhaustively search the country for guns would be prohibitively high and simply unfeasible. In short, the hundreds of millions of guns in the country aren?t going anywhere, no matter what laws are passed, and even if the guns were to somehow magically vanish, criminals would simply import new guns, just as they import drugs and other contraband.

Human nature is another aspect. A cursory study of human nature makes clear that (1) criminals disobey laws, including gun control laws, (2) that whether criminals have guns or not, they will commit their crimes, (3) that the law abiding citizens who would follow such a hypothetical gun ban are not the people we need to worry about having guns.
Addressing the first point that criminals disobey laws, including gun control laws, should not require much explanation. The fact is that there are people in our society who feel that they don?t have to obey the laws. Some of them unlawfully park in handicapped parking spaces, others never use their turn signals, and some commit murder. In each case, humans have chosen to disobey a law, and for such people, gun control laws are just one more law to ignore. I would be willing to be good money that there has never been a criminal ready to commit a murder who changed his or her mind because there was a gun ban, and he or she didn?t want to face a gun possession charge.
The second point that criminals will commit their crimes with or without guns should be equally obvious. Guns are a (relatively) new thing in human history, yet crime has occurred since before the start of recorded history, showing that guns are not a necessary tool of criminals. Criminals who do not have guns also ply their illicit trades, and the majority of violent crimes are committed by criminals without guns.
The third point is that law abiding citizens, who are the only ones that would obey a gun ban, are not the people we want to take guns away from. Rather, armed and law abiding citizens stop criminals every single day, providing security for us all since the police can?t be everywhere all the time. A criminal who is stopped by a law abiding citizen today cannot victimize another law abiding citizen tomorrow. Indeed I would argue that any citizen who would give up their guns rather than face a gun possession charge is someone who wouldn?t commit a more serious crime such as murder or robbery. This is because it simply doesn?t make sense that a person would fear a relatively minor gun possession charge, but not fear a murder or armed robbery charge.

In short, an America where guns are banned by law would be a place that criminals, who, by definition, won?t obey the law and will still keep their guns, would have a monopoly on force. The law abiding citizens would be left without the means to defend themselves in a timely fashion, and would instead have to hope that the police somehow show up in time. Criminals, who don?t fear murder or robbery charges, wouldn?t give a second thought to the gun ban and would keep their illegal guns, and import more just as they import drugs. Secure in the knowledge that the citizens are unarmed and defenseless, criminals would be emboldened. Even the most anti-gun politicians recognize this, and keep armed body guards close by for their own security.

About 50,000 Americans are killed in car collisions each year, compared to the roughly 10,000 people murdered (many of whom are criminals in gang vs gang shootings, being shot by police and being shot by their own dumbassery in the handling of guns) or shot by ?accident?(negligence) ? making cars 5 times more likely to cause death. Even adjusting for the fact that only about 40% of Americans interact with guns, while nearly 100% of Americans interact with cars, cars still pose a 2.5 times greater risk to your average citizen than guns. However that is not the end of the analysis, as guns are used for self defense about 2.5 million times each year, saving far more lives than are lost.

I advocate banning personal use of motor vehicles to save the lives of 50000 americans each year, let's leave driving to the professional bus drivers and cabbies who are the only ones to be trusted with vehicles!

Oh, and my first gun: Kwa g36c

EDIT: I've put the wall of text into a spoiler for neatness.

And you'd shoot it maybe once a year, if that. :D The Delta Elite may be a totem gun - one that makes an impression - but 10mm is notorious for working your wrists hard, and one of my buddies has a Delta that he never shoots because he claims that the slide keeps trying to tear off the skin between his knuckles.

(I really like guns, excuse me while I crit people's choices...)

I have a gf who was in the Army.

She can shoot for me.

I own a couple of my father's guns, but I inherited them. I see no reason to actually OWN a gun, however. *shrug*

I support this.

Then again, I don't drive, so I'd not really be at a loss, here...

First gun I ever shot was was a break action double barreled shotgun, that sucker kicks like crazy when you fire both at once. Once I have the spare cash I'm considering picking up a handgun, probably something simple like a nine mil.

uhg, I'm going to put only 1 thing into the stupid gun debate and you can take from it what you will, I wont comment again about it. To those that think the world would be a better place if weapons dont exist, I'm going to take a random sampling of men. Lets go with say, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, and...say... Tobey Maguire. Now, assume these two both want something to the point that they dont care for the consequences, in a world without weapons who gets it? if you answered anything other than Dwayne, you're wrong. In a world without weapons the strong fighting type guy gets his way 100% of the time. In a world where everyone has a gun, there are no strong men, just other people with guns, it's called equal footing, and just like how nuclear weapons have kept the "gun toting" americans from going to war with russia, china, iran, pakistan, etc... the knowledge that the people you're competing with have an 'equalizer' in this case a gun, means you're far more likely to try working out the problem with words first.

That is the two cents of a logical gun enthusiast who believes anyone that wants a gun should have it, but they should have to take a safety class first.

I don't want to own a gun, the effort you have to go to is far from worth it. I've watched two of my friends get their gun licences and it seems like such a pain. Plus, with them both owning licences and guns, they can take me to the shooting range.

Also, for the record I think owning guns in self defence is silly.

Not that I disagree, but I thought we were talking guns here, not gun rights?

Moving along, this was my other choice for a first gun:
Popular at the time, less so now.

I'm not really interested in guns and they're pretty hard to come by in the UK but I have 2 air rifles; .177 and .22.

i have a pellet/bb gun (can fire both) and have shot some squirells (quite accurately) and i have shot targets with a .22.

However eventualy i am going to get an actual firearm to hunt with, I dont know what kind though. (Grandfather, dad, and uncles all hunt and my mom even knows how to gut certain animals so its kinda in the family)

As for the self defense discussion that has poped up, I live in a nice area, there is almost no crime so i dont feel the need to protect myself. However if someone did break in I trust my own body and my knowledge of the human bodys weak points to take him down more than i trust a complicated firearm.

20 gauge semi-auto shotgun (Remington, I think).

I received some other firearms later, but I just have my parents keep track of them. I have no time to leave the city to go shooting and they're more likely to use them out in the country.
