I started with rammstein, i think. then i went through a bit of an emo phase, with lost prophets and mcr (only one album each, mind you), went off it for a bit, listened to indie (i know, terrible mistake), then i saw the light and returned to metal. i almost immediately went to swedish stuff, but i digress.

P.S., could anybody recommend me some screamy, heavy metal? by screamy, i mean growly, not iron maiden, more like amon amarth.

I dont know if this is what you mean but you could try All Shall Perish-Black Gold Reign. It's a great song with loads of screamy goodness in :)

I grew up with Pantera. Literally. My brother used to watch me while my mom was at work, and when he would hang out with daryl at his parents house he'd take me along. I still remember watching Sesame street while their mom's Schnauser was trying to attack me. I also remember being shot in the ass with a blow dart gun, and being thrown into a ceiling fan. ahh childhood memories.

My dad raised me on Metallica. Then, in my early middle school years, my friend showed me Slayer.

My music library and interests careened out of control after that.

For me it was Metallica at church camp when I was but a wee lad, then it moved on into Maiden, GnR, Crue, Twisted Sister, Poison, Warrant, Megadeth, ACDC, and many more. But I always return to that which is Metallica.

I decided to jump straight into the action... or rather, was thrown headfirst into the pool of metal. My first metal band was actually the black metal band Cradle of Filth, whom (while I still somewhat enjoy today) are fairly harsh and kinda scary after the closest thing to that sort of music I had listened to until then was minor-key video-game themes that sounded dark and creepy.

Nowadays I'm into a lot more metal, ranging from the nu stuff to back in the day with good ol' Black Sabbath. As of now I'm addicted to Muse and Darkseed (whom I'm fairly sure both qualify as metal of some sort).

No idea. It was a slow transition from alternative rock and other stuff like it. Could have been Killswitch Engage or something. Bloody glad i got into it though, best music ever.

Vital Remains first album. The opening track about 2 minutes in becomes the greatest iron opera since the dawn of time.

When I was a young lad of 3 years old, I received Master of Puppets on good old vinyl in the spring of 1996. I guess it was because my father was aware of the bullshit "new" stuff that was coming out at the time, and he felt it was better to warp my fragile brain with truly heavy metal. And warp he did. To this day I have seen three Metallica concerts, and am going to see my 4th in October.

Rammstein

In my early days of hearing metal, I couldn't understand half the lyrics they sang. So I stumbled upon this German band and found comfort in not understanding ANY of the lyrics (as I don't speak a word of German) That allowed me to sit back and enjoy the music itself.

Most likely it was Metallica, although I dont listen to them any longer, still angry over their stance about napster.
