(is there an actual name for this genre yet?)
Metroidvania is the term I most hear banded about, which works pretty well :)

I wish for realism in story to be preserved. True that some of our greatest games of all time were some of the wackiest, but that doesn't mean that "You must destroy the Reapers, a Sentient Race of Robots the size of ships that are the pinnical of all Non-Biological Life, and who come to destroy the Galaxy once again simply because they fancy that tingly feeling of being psychotic and taking away that lolipop from life. Also they decided to make a Reaper Version of you by sacrificing a whole lot of you..." WTFF!!! was my reaction to the ludicrous story line. I still play the games though :( (Mass Effect Series).
Mass Effect's realism got blown to bits the moment they introduced space-telekinesis and an entire lesbian alien race. Not knocking it, mind you, as I love the games, but I don't think "realism" is the point you're trying to make, here. Maybe more like "story points that aren't ridiculous." Although I'm assuming the Reapers' motivation gets explained in the next game.

As for the OP: good writing/narrative. If there's one part of the industry that consistently needs improvement, it's that. Hell, most studios don't even have dedicated writers on-staff. While there are a few gems here and there they are very few and far between. I still haven't seen anything as good as PS:T, and while there are tons of more traditional narratives that are very well-done, there's not as much that takes advantage of providing an experience in an interactive medium.

I remember that! I would love to see that return!

OT: Freelancer's battle system was very fun. I would love to play another like it.

the MMORPG.
Hear me out. The MMORPG is one of the most limited of gaming areas. THere are so few madly successful ones. I came think of WoW and Everquest,a few others, but those are the major two babies.
Anyone ever heard of Maplestory? Loved that game, and then it became so... cluttered, simplified and boring.
First online game I played was Runescape. It too, became boring. Eve? god, it was soooooo cool at first. just awesome. But couldn't stick with it.
I want MMORPG's that can keep me entertained, without just trying to be a WoW clone. For the sake of brevity (cuz I could go on and on about this) I digress.

Also, I want Oddworld studios to re-open. please.

Old school rpgs where you had to eat and drink to survive. I liked how New Vegas had hardcore mode which implemented this kind of stuff. I'd like to see more games with modes like that on the market.

Edit: Wow, really? I had to watch the ad 3 times because the CAPTCHA wasn't appearing...

Complex RPGs like Baldurs Gate. Also underground exploration games like Diggles or Clonk.

I hope someone shares this view...

World War 2 Games. I know most people will think am crazy but let me explain. World war 2 games the majority of them do not even know the potential of the genre.

Look at brothers in arms. It was a very serious historically accurate and just as real as it could be. The series was all about tactics and your squads.

The story included how bonds would grow on the battlefield, what its like to be in charge of 13 men all with families awaiting there return. It followed a complex story of guilt and regret and even captured th effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on the main character, to seeing things that weren't real or seeing ghosts of his past manifested from his guilt over the men he lost and the secrets as to how he lost them.

I hope one person understands what am saying or knows what am talking about i feel alone in this veiw and its pretty depressing seeing how everyone says WW2 games are boring now. There is SO MUCH untapped potential that it seems only Brothers in Arms has captured.
That's a really damn good argument. Since I'm in the middle of a Persona obsession, I'd like to see Atlus attempt a character driven WW2 game. They just might be able to make it work.

OT: 2D fighting games. Picked up SF4 after the longest time of not playing a fighter, and I'm currently obsessing over BlazBlue (whenever Persona 4 doesn't take up half my day already). I am immensely enjoying myself and hope that 3D never becomes the only way.

A more short-term wish would be for another Lambda/Nu type character be introduced for the third game (if not Lambda or Nu themselves). I like Lambda's playstyle.

I can't tell if that's sincere or not because I can't remember the game that well, but if you have the sheer audacity to mock the single greatest game to ever grace the PC, save Lego Rock Raiders, I will end you so fast you won't have time to blink.

OT: Static health kits, i.e. healing stations mounted on the wall. The last time I saw that was I believe in Half Life 2, and even then they weren't exactly prevalent.
No sarcasm, I bloody love that game, it's my favourite racing game of all time :D damn Rocket Racer...

(if you look through the thread, you'll see I've written a paragraph on why it's so good)

And you played Rock Raiders too? Awesome!
I've still got that game lying around my room, I should pick it up again some time. And Lego Island 2, damn that was pretty fun too.

I have to say... Rock Band.

I didn't care for the first 2. but they really tried to innovate with keyboards and 6 string guitar instead of guitar with color buttons.

I was hoping they would push the 6 string guitar further for future game. But it seems like there wont be Rock Band 4. It's a shame.

oh thats simple, no cover and no recharging health. because REAL men (or particuarly awesome chicks) dont need cover or full health for sitting in a corner. the only exeptpion i can think of is portal, regenerating health there is fine.
Check out Warhamer 40k: Space Marine. You get HP from killing enemies, and as any fan of 40k would know, space marines aren't the kind to hide behind walls. And the warhammer space marines were the originals.

I want 2 things:
1 moral choices to evolve/ be made a lot more present
2 for there to be way more in the way of complex characters who have very real stories
Morality is something that makes you go ' dang, my mind is blown up" it makes you examine so many aspects of humanity, making games much more deep and philisophical. I like that a lot, it makes our medium much more respectable, way too go extra credits

Characters simply display rage and testosterone, not that we need to do away with these guys, but have more characters who want more than blood and hate. How about an idealist? Or a Lover? Or a revolutionary person who wants to change the world? Whos with me?
Try Kinghts of the Old Republic. The moral choices aren't terribly complicated, but they work, and the story will blow your mind more than a nuclear earwig.

You know the remake "Dungeons" has been released on steam?
No!
NO!
NONONONONONONO!

Dungeons is NOT Dungeon Keeper!
Dungeons is nothing LIKE Dungeon Keeper!
Do not be fooled by its first glance impression.
Its gameplay and concept is entirely different.
And it is by no way any kind of 'remake' of DK.
Saying such a thing is downright offensive.
GOG.com has the original Dungeon Keeper... But you may already know that.

Anyhow, I'd like more good point and click adventures. There are actually a good amount of point and clicks still being made, but most of them are no where near the quality of my favorite titles like Shivers, Shivers 2, 7th Guest, Zork Nemesis, etc..

And I still like turn based combat. I'm one of the few, I know. Maybe I don't need it so much on the big consoles, but at least a few on the handheld systems would be nice.
