I like metal, but i do not like the heavy/growly stuff. I hover around the symphonic power proggie metal areas of the genre, but i really love a bit of Iron Maiden.
Just ran into a prog-tinged power metal band I think you (and anyone of similar sensibilities) might like (assuming of course that you/they don't already know all about them): Freedom Call.

BTW it's good to see someone recommending Within Temptation around here. They may not be ridiculously popular but their music rocks.
Have you heard of Delain? They basically grew out of Within Temptation (the keyboard player used to be in WT, and is the brother of the guitarist). They're pretty cool.
I enjoy metal and rock, will listen to most stuff however.
This. VERY this - I have both their albums and they are both freaking awesome.
They're good fun live too, have both the albums and saw them with Sonata Artica in London a month ago.

Thanks man, thats some good stuff. Out of interest, where do you get your music from? I prefer not to use bittorrents and such, and would normally buy music over i tunes. However, for some reason or other i carn't connect to the i tunes music store, and most stores on the high street don't sell bands such as Within Temptation for instance because they are so obscure. Does anyone have any ideas were else i could get music from that would be compatable with I tunes?

I typically get my music from Amazon actually, via their MP3 downloads section - they have the album those songs came from on sale for $6. Should be compatible with iTunes, since they're just DRM-free MP3 files and anything can play those.

I don't love it, I listen to a few metal or hard rock bands (I can't tell the difference) however I prefer songs that are upbeat and light-hearted. Even when I'm angry I listen to music to feel better but instead of going with some metal where the music matches, I find songs that the music is bouncy and energetic while the lyrics are emo.

I love Metal, even the "screamy" (although that's just a word it's not technically screaming)stuff. My favorite bands include Lamb of God, Megadeath, Devildriver and stuff like that. I'm also a big fan fan of industrial bands like KMFDM and Rob zombie, and probably one of the most interesting things I've listened to in a long time is Samael's Industrial Black Metal.

Although there no were near a list of my favorite bands I do like slipknot and I don't think they deserve the hate they get. They have a few really good songs, a fair amount of ok songs, and admittedly a lot of absolute crap, but at least their not like this pop shit of entire albums or samey shit.

Also John 5 as a solo artist is amazing

it depends, you get differant types of metal, black metal, death metal etc etc, anything about as heavy as BFMV or disturbed is fine but as for the really heavy stuff that generally sounds like someone is raping a pig next to a microphone isn't for me

You can make boats and cutlery and stuff out of it.

I'm against using it to make bullets, though

into the mainstream for the first time since the 80s (thanks primarily to bands like Disturbed)
Dont you mean older bands such as Metallica or Iron Maiden... you know THE ACTUAL OLD METAL BANDS, these made metal popular Disturbed didnt show up until late 90's
...okay, I really need to edit my OP. I've had to explain over and over that metal has been re-acceptepted by the mainstream for the first time since the 80's ended and metal fell out of favour by the general public in North America. I know that metal did not die; it has always had a plethora of fans and from what I gather it was always very popular in Europe and especially Scandinavia. But it was mainly because of the nu-metal genre that included bands like Disturbed, Korn, and Slipknot that brought metal back into the spotlight in the US and Canada. I am not saying that you stopped liking metal at any time; I am saying that the public in general, especially most major radio stations mostly forgot about metal during the mid to late 90's (with few exceptions).

If you read through the thread you would see that I have explained all this before.

I apreciate metal though I dont own any cd's or anything. Some of my friends are into it and I often hang out with them at bars that have that music and even concerts. I like some of the well known songs like raining blood, ace of spades and painkiller. If your a real metal fan I wont have to tell you the band names of those songs.

I even made a sleeveless denim patch jacket for when I go to another concert with my friends.

On the off chance that anyone is still reading this thread and might find it interesting, I figured I'd post a bunch of songs I dug up for some other thread, since I'd already done the work as it were.

Nu Metal isnt Metal though, atleast most of it. Nu Metal just needs a new name.
I'd suggest "terrible", but the internet already does that enough as it is now.

See what I mean?

The genre of metal irritates me because its a bunch of untalented musicisians struming power chords really fast and banging on drums really loudly.

However, there are some talented metal bands like the Disturbed and Metallica. I just hate Slipknot and those other copycat bands that are just like Spipknot or trying really hard to be like Slipknot.
This is the thing I hate to hear from people. Heavy Metal is, as a whole, musically sound. The only genre that's more complex than Heavy Metal is classical music. I'm not saying there aren't any bands that try to immitate Metal by just stringing together something heavy, like Nu Metal, Screamo or some Metalcore, but most Metal will be musically complex, technical, and awesome. Whether you like it or not. I've met people who recognise this, but just don't like Heavy Metal. And Slipknot are one of those bands that don't stand out instrumentally, but compose there songs to fit together as a whole. There's proof everywhere. The fact that they can actually play these things live proves talent (see Dragonforce). Albums are released with, usually, at least a year between, because thought actually goes into it. And Metalheads only listen to Metal because there is something unexplainable that means, for us, it transcends everything else. But I do listen to punk, some Hard Rock. Lastly, no Death Metal is not just screaming into a microphone. Growling is a style of vocals, it can be very hard if done to the degree many bands do it, especially considering they manage to leave their vocal cords intact. See if you can imitate Job For A Cowboy. That is some amazing vocals.
