I like Dragonforce a bit for their long guitar riffs, particlularly Through The Fire and The Flames.

Not very keen on other metal, for a variety of reasons:
1. Many are just about Satanic things or whatever (I'm a Christian, so I take offense at that.)
2. The screaming in the songs quickly drives me insane.
3. Many of the singers are drug addicts or abuse some sort of substance (Yes, I know that's profiling, but it's mostly true).

Myself? I'm fond of Christian music and most of its sub-genres, but my absolute favorite would have to be Instrumental Music (that's music without words, in case you're thrown off by big words).
Not all metal is satanic. See Protest the Hero, As I Lay Dying, and August Burns Red.
Notice how I said MANY are satanic? I did not say all of them were.

Still, I like my Instrumental music.
Correction- most "metal" bands aren't satanic. Normally they're categorized into "black" or "death" genres and subgenres. There's other non-screamy, non-satanic metal out there.

My opinion is that you're letting bands like Slipknot stereotype the genre into something that it's not. Plenty of death/black/hardcore metal bands do clean vocals. Come Clarity by In Flames is just one example.

And I'd like to see some proof for your third remark. It's definitely profiling, and it's not true. Classic rock stars were abusers; metal, not so much. Sure, big acts like Ozzy, Megadeth, and Pantera had trouble with it, but that doesn't mean every band out there snorts coke right before a show.

That said, Rody Walker may come out on stage drunk, but he can still sing better than 90% of vocalists of any genre.
Ah. I see now. Man, I can't believe I was so ignorant. My apologies if I offended you in any way, I'm not all that familiar with Metal, so I just have the few songs I've heard as experience. Guess I was listening to the wrong stuff...

Water under the bridge, man. I had the same outlook on metal until one of my friends (a metalhead, as it were) turned me onto several metal bands and tried out my tastes. I found out that while I do like the occasional Swedish melodic death metal song, I'm a sucker for progressive and speed metal. It all depends on what you want out of the music.

Its a joke. I love to play it just to laugh at how evil and satanic it sounds but I cannot take it seriously, if I do it's to angry for me because I am usually a (semi-)happy person.

Metal fans, "arrogant and elitist"? Some of them, maybe, but mostly that's Hip-Hop's shtick.

I love Speed myself, but I don't know many bands in that genre, unfortunately. In Prog, my favorite band is probably Dream Theater.

I don't know too much Progressive metal. Can you recommend me a couple of good bands so I can get a taste of the sound?

EDIT: WOO! Post #1000!

I tend to like most types of metal except for the ones where the drummer thinks doing blast beats the whole time makes him awsome. Probably favour melodic death metal the most.

I listen to Black Metal, Thrash Metal, Melodic Death Metal and Tech Metal. Persoanlly I can't stand deathcore, just because you can play breakdowns and pig squeal doesn't mean that your music is any good. Pre Ruination JFAC is crap along with whitechapel, emmure and those other bands.
Just my opinion

I like it. I listen to a bunch of different subgenres but there are others i am not interested in. For example, i haven't really liked death metal, but i started listening to Nile and i like it. Oh, but yeah, i listen to other music besides metal too.

I like metal. It's fast, aggressive, has a lot more depth to it than most modern music and is just generally a lot of fun to listen to.

Only thing that bothers me (aside from the risk of my ridiculously skinny body being crushed in a mosh pit) is the excessive labelling, with all the sub-genres. I wish people would stop arguing over a band's categorisation, recognise that bands each have their own unique sound and just enjoy the damn music! \m/

I'll listen to metal, but it wouldn't necessarily be my favourite genre. I like metal bands like KoRn and Slipknot (I know, I know, I should be ashamed and all that), but rock would be my preferred genre. Bands that blur the lines between rock and metal tend to be well-received by me, though.
Basically this, yeah, yeah, yeah, I like Slipknot and nu-metal, I have no idea what metal is whatsoever. Anyway, I pretty much like thrash metal as well.

First off, saying Disturbed is a metal band has just discredited you of being at rue metal fan. They're more of a rock band, maybe hard rock. NOT metal. Yelling isn't screaming.

As for my views on metal, I am a rabid fan.
I'm into all types of metal too.
Cradle of Filth, Lamb of God, WhiteChapel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Killswitch Engaged, Trivium, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Eluveitie, and so many more.

My views on it are pretty simply. Metal is untapped emotion. It's about losing control and releasing all of that pent up aggression, hate, and depression.
I've been to countless shows, seen people all laughing and having a great time while bleeding. People jump into massive pits, come out with busted lips and they're as happy as ever.
Plus the level of activity and viciousness that goes on is just breath taking. When a front man gets every person at a show to do a wall of death or start several giant pits, or even just getting them all to yell and clap and jump and scream in unison, it's amazing.

I don't know, I just find every aspect of the genre mesmerizing.

Metal is my favorite genre. Metal, not that scream-o "death metal" bullshit that involves three guitarists riffing the whole song and the vocalist deepthroating the mic while he scratces his voice box with a rake.

Its quite funny to to take a look at the actual lyrics of most of those "Evil and satanic" songs, you'll notice that some of them have quite some suprising lyrics.

for example; The death metal band Debauchery has at least one song based on Warhammer 40K in each album.
