None of you know what you are taking about except for MusicalFreedom.

Disturbed aren't metal, they are Hard Rock. Killswitch aren't Emo, and Emo isn't MCR or Fallout Boy. Wikipedia will tell you everything there is to know about what Emo was, a subgenre of Hardcore Punk. Metallica can't play anymore to save their lives, and weren't even that creative to begin with. Death Metal lyrics are almost never about Satan and grunts can be understood fine if you get used to it, or just go read the lyrics somewhere. Finally, Metal isn't just smashing drums and power chords. If you bothered to delve more than 2 songs into the genre, you'd know that. A lot of you should just never be allowed to talk about music, ever. You make me sick.

Go ahead and ban me, I only registered to tell you idiots that you don't know what you're on about. Now, start throwing half-witted insults at me.

Figures, my point has been made over and over again. Well, maybe I can at least bring in a new term: The bell curve. It's likely that just about everybody here has heard that term, but it gives us a new way to look at this topic. Obviously, there are going to be a fair number of bands whose talent falls in the middle of the curve. The only problem I have with the genre is that it seems like more and more bands fall on the blander side of the middle, and it's because there are high school children (I'm 22, and already a curmudgeonly old man) who don't know they can pick and choose when it comes to their music. Instead of liking a band because the vocalist is really good, or because the guitar solos are particularly energizing, the like a band because they're told they should by music stores, dumbass friends and whatever media they happen to frequent. Oh, sure, there's the occasional anomaly where these children actually listen to really good music, but it doesn't even come close to offsetting all the wreaking crap that sells, in spite of some benevolent cosmic force.
Mind, these aren't the bitter, nostalgic ramblings of a middle-aged hasbeen head-banger who grew up with old-school AC/DC; I repeat, I'm 22 years old, and I don't really begrudge a youngling's freedom of choice, I just wish they could be little more, what's the word, you know, discerning.

I dunno. We had a good thing going with bronze for a while, but then gold made an appearance and everybody went f*ck-nuts insane. Iron was good till stell came along, but they both got sacked when sci-fi's favourite titanuim made a showing. Silver is pretty but has a nasty habit of turning into tarnished shit, but copper turns that pretty little green color. I guess without metal we wouldn't have submarines or space ships so, i guess metal is okay.

Oh wait a minute...

People here dwell on it too much, makes me wonder if they ever plan on listening to other kinds of music. I think most people here like it due to their age and status as a "gamer". But what do i know, theres some good and theres some bad. You asked for my opinion and there you go. Enjoy.
havent seen you in a while meta

I like metal for metal's sake.

Trivium is also a good band
And don't get me started about the little morons like you who are KILLING Metal by flooding the market with your terrible, uninspired teeny-metal like Trivium and Bullet for my Valentine. I think my life became a lot better knowing that A7X's drummer died, too. I hope for your sake that you're under the age of 16.
im acctually 19 but what the fuck are you going to to about it? ill listen to whatever i want to listen to, do you acctually think i give a shit about what you think? and A7X is also an amazing band, you can go on about these bands "Killing" metal all you want, but id love to see you produce better music that has the amount of fans that those bands do

If your just going to troll the forums and Quote poeple and start arguments just because someones taste is differant to yours dont fucking bother leaving comments at all.

I have mixed feelings for metal, because some bands I just absolutely love to listen to like disturbed and System of a Down, but most other metal bands just sound like noise pollution to me.

I appreciate metal. I don't listen to it constantly but I do think it's a fantastic genre of music. I much prefer punk and anything related to punk (hardcore, ska etc) but I listen to fairly hardcore punk bands like Gallows and Misfits which have links to metal and I have to admit I have metal guilty pleasures which most hardcore metal fans hate, like Suicide Silence and Bring Me The Horizon. But, as OP says, Disturbed are a great band and I also adore Avenged Sevenfold, which I suppose are more heavy rock than metal but some would argue otherwise.
So... yes, I like metal

I've always hated metal, much prefer something a bit melodic and a bit less screamy

However....

I've recently started listening to loads of US alternative music, especially quite a lot of Hard Core Punk and Grunge, stuff like that. A Year ago I probably would of said that it constituted Noise, so maybe I've sliding down the slippy slope to eventually liking metal, I dunno. Hopefully not though.

It's defenitly the hardest genre to play, allthough sometimes it just gets too much. But I prefer mostly metal, Distrubed, KoRn, Slipknot, Mustach, Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Evanesence, System of a down so on and so forth. However these are mostly something that metalheads call nu-metal (I don't get it). Apparently (according to metalheads such as AC/DC fans and such bands) this is not real metal, I mean really who the fuck are they to decide?

I don't think slipknot and disturbed or other mainstream bands today are real metal.
there is no real rebelion in them they are all owned by big corporations.
I am into Punk, Hardcore, and Oi, and the metal I listen too is black metal like Von or Gorgoroth

Although I can listen to and enjoy just about every genre of music (except rap), metal is unquestionably my favorite broad-based genre. I've been listening to it since 1984, and I have favorites in just about every subgrouping / subgenre tag you want to attach to it - ranging everywhere and anywhere...glam/poseur, "true"/classic, power, doom, stoner, thrash, progressive, neo-classical, death, black, grindcore, folk, groove, Viking, gothic, symphonic, alternative metal...you name it, I probably listen to it and enjoy it. (Okay, maybe not "rap metal.")

My CD collection, currently numbering somewhere around 5000 discs or so, is probably 85-90% "metal." I play metal guitar, bass, and keyboards. I've been the producer / co-mastering engineer on two metal compilation albums which supported a cancer research fund and am currently working on producing a third. I've written CD reviews for two online metal magazines.

So...yeah, I guess I like it.

You realize there are entire sub-genres based around singing melodically in metal that are almost always devoid of screaming, right?

And those are just a bare handful of examples. Whether or not you one day reconcile yourself with growling/screaming is something you'll have to work out on your own, but I can tell you right now that you can hate vocals like that and yet absolutely love a great deal of metal bands, no slippery slope involved at all.

I'm so glad you asked. Fucking hate it. Guitar wankery. This whole idea that complexity equals quality. No you're song isn't good because you're such a technically proficient guitarist. You still can't write a fucking hook to save your life.

Wow. That felt good. You DID ask.

I dislike Metal intensely it all sounds like mindless thrashing and bad lyrics, I can just about stand hard Rock like Motorhead but thats the utter limit. I like my tunes like I like my women, groovy swinging and with a guitar in them. :)
Maybe you want to edit that "guitar in it", it sounds dubious, and though I respect you're musical preference, let me say:

METAL IS AWESOME!

At least, the good kind...

I like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Children of Bodom, InFlames and any band that puts thought in their songs depicting feelings I can relate to. That just happens to be metal.
Also, liking metal does not make it omposible to like other genres, or vice versa, but anyway, that's another discussion...

I like metal, yes, and like it is with all things in life, liking a general thing, you're still allowed to hate some parts of it. I don't like doom metal, drone metal, and any metal that cannot look at itself with a big wink.

It is the manliest music on the planet, so it is my music. But in all seriousness, no offense to you but bands like Disturbed are not Metal, i've been listening to metal since i was 8 and i'm not anti-social and i get pretty good grades in school, so that metal stigma is the same kind of stereotype people make about hip-hop. Although metal is my favorite genre, i will listen to anything with a message and not brainless, shit writing. That is why one of my favorite artists is Immortal Technique, a rapper, not a Metal band, but i will always love Metal. Bands like Neurosis, Mastodon, Baroness, Lamb of God, Opeth, Ever grey, in Flames and At The Gates will always be with me.
